Square Enix today revealed a glimpse of the new Chocobo Circuit feature from its upcoming Final Fantasy XI expansion, Treasures of Aht Urhgan, and it looks something like a cross between the pod-racer arenas from the recent Star Wars Episode I movie and the chocobo races from Final Fantasy VII.
While the first screens don't actually reflect any of this, Square has said that how you raise your bird will determine its size and shape, and ultimately its stats. By introducing your chocobo to a friend's bird, provided they are compatible and of the opposite sex, it's possible that you can even breed more chocobos as well.

Many questions still remain in regards to this new feature, which is among the most highly requested additions to FFXI. Where will you keep your chocobo (will players have individual instanced stables, similar to their mog houses)? How often can you breed? Where will you be able to sell chocobos? And most importantly, will you be able to ride your own chocobo around Vana'diel? What we do know is that players will have some time to get up to speed on taking care of their birds.

The Chocobo Circuit isn't scheduled to go live until later in the year (the Circuit will be patched in sometime in Fall it seems), giving chocobo-breeders at least a four month head start to get crackin' on their skill sets. It's uncertain as to whether FFXI will support a league, with rankings and the best chocobo racers (making it more competitive, like Ballista), but for now, just take a look at the screens we've collected and consider the possibilities.

It mostly seems like speculation on part of 1up.com but it's something :D
go go black choco

I'm pretty sure this will definitely come, because if you watched the expansion trailer, there's one short scene of a chocobo race happening, although they were all just regular-yellowed colours.

They've already said it's going to. The first update after the expansion will let you start breeding, and then the second one after the expansion (two months after the first), you'll be able to race them. I sooooooooo hope that we can ride them outside as well. Call them with a Chocobo whistle or something like that. It'd be so nice sometimes.

Yea, I wouldn't mind having to pay a stable fee to keep your own somewhere, then able to ride it whenever you want.

All i want is a track with game controlled betting. Real time odds where people are paid based upon what other people have bet on. /drool over the possibilities of it being like horseracing tracks.

I'm sure it's mentioned in an interview somewhere that there's no plans for you to ride your own chocobo outside of the circuit, as renting chocobos takes money out of the economy. Though, SE said they'll consider it if there's enough demand for it.

Well if we have a stable for our chocobos and have to pay fee's it would take money out of the economy too. Whats more, if you can only access your chocobo from that stable but have an indefinate amount of time on it, it would work well. I mean lets say your chocobo stable is in Windurst. Well in order to ride to bastok thats along way. So some people would still airship or chocobo from jeuno. Thus MORE money is being taken out from a mixture of stable fees and chocobo fees(and airship fees :p).

Choco races a go go! This is one thing i'm really looking forward to. I already know who my breeding partner is gonna be ;)

I'm sorry but everytime I think about Chocobo breeding this always comes to mind:
