Church camp

What is this documentary of which you speak - Jesus Camp? Is it somethin I'm likely to find on YouTube, or will I have to make a trip to my local Video/Tanning booth/Bait and Tackle Store?

I'd really like to watch this. There's nothing more entertaining, in my opinion, than watching the utter corruption and subversion of a true visionary's message. Of course, I've always been the kinda guy that likes a good mad-on every once in a while :P

I'm sure your local Blockbuster carries it, but I'm sure youtube does too. I've seen it, it's basically like the equivilent of a documentary on extreme radicalist muslim terrorists and calling it a documentary on the muslim religion - only it's about Christian's.

Best thing about church camp, especially Falls Creek, is that you were guaranteed to get laid at least once in the 7 days there.

;) This is a capital reason to embrace religion.

...or at least pretend you do.

Do Christians in the USA seriously act that insane/cultish?

Some, but not all. I've been to a few "Fire/Brimstone" churches, and I've seen my fair share of Holy Rollers, Bible Thumpers, and Endtime Prophets, but far and wide, most churches in the US are friendly places, and while there may be a member of said congregation who feels the duty to "save the world (read: force theological doctrine on others)", they're not representative of the whole.

Point: The Christian world is not represented by the Jim Bakkers, the TBN, Pat Robertson, or the 700 Club. They just have more money than they know what to do with.

2nd Point: My folks always taught me that it's a bad sign when a pastor preaches a sermon *out* of the Book of Revelation. Since Revelation is a symbolic and wholly mysterious text, nobody can effectively preach directly from it.

For instance: Some of the aforementioned characters will go so far as to say that "ooohhh, we're LIVING in the End Times" and all that jazz, quoting Rev. scriptures ad infinitum. Yet, they miss a scripture written directly in the Gospels(check me, someone, Websense blocks "Traditional Religions" at work >.>) of "The Son of Man will come like a thief in the night", meaning *no* person, living or dead, knows when the prophesied 2nd Coming will occur.

Most of us are afraid of snakes, let alone kissing any...

When I was 14 years old I went to a week long Church camp, I brought a quarter and my pipe with me and smoked it all in the course of about 5 days while staying there.
I smoked a bowl in the bathroom of a private Christian school once too. That was where I had to go to take my ACT when I was in highschool.

Lol nice. If you didn't have the pipe with you, I have found that bible paper works fine as rolling papers. Those little pocket sized bibles, they are a good size, and that bible paper is very thin like rolling papers.

Southern Baptists and Evangelicals primarily are the real crazies, seen some scary shit down in Georgia and South Carolina . (See: Men chaining themselves to signs screaming how we need to repent and embrace Jesus's "Love of everyone" or burn in a pit of fire and stuff", see: Georgia has the worlds first creationist meusuem, man walking with the dinosaurs who where on the arc! Yay!) You don't really see that kind of stuff up in the Northeast or the western states. Southeast to mid west yes its there. They call it the bible belt for a reason. I can honestly say they scare me 100 times more then the likes of Bin Laden, Iran, or North Korea ever will.

What actual percent of Christians are the type of people who would LOVE to burn people like me at the stake out of "love" is really hard to say. I have run into some and they scare me cause things that question their faith, you know like facts and what not are just further proof that your soul needs salvation. That being said a very vocal minority is usually enough to ruin a reputation. (see: only 0.4% of Chinese gamers are gil/gold/whatever sellers)

Dire not all of the midwest is that bad. Yes we have bible thumpers, and shit like that. It's more south east and Indiana that are like this. In all my years of living in Illinois I have never seen someone as crazy as people in the south.

Was more referring to Kansas in particular. The North Midwest I had figured was relatively sane, sorry if my geography references are craptastic. Kansas has that church with the people who show up to the funerals of veterans with signs like, "Thank Jesus for Sept 11th to kill the fags!" and stuff like that. Cheering how that US soldiers deserve to die because some of the people they are defending are gay, or Aethiest, or not just like them. Or that school system in Kansas (and others: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creati...cent_developments_in_state_education_programs)

Warning rant on creationism or Intelligent design being taught in Science class follows. Sorry its a petpeeve of mine and proof how people are frigging stupid.

Why you would insist on having something that is ENTIRELY based on opinion and interpretation (IE human eye is to complicated to evolve on its own, even though we don't have the best overall quality, Octopus do, damn that blind spot causing neural chord, stupid evolution backing us into a damn corner on that one) with no sort of factual basis and evidence, which is what SCIENCE is, is completely beyond me. You know the whole concept of gathering data and performing experiments to come up with hypothesis and then further testing them until eventually you get enough evidence to support a Theory. The ability for someone of appropriate proficiency in the subject material to recreate the experiment is absolutely critical. Creationism is all about interpreting things in a way that says there was an outsider involved. How that fits into gathering hard evidence and running any sort of repeatable trials is beyond me.

But hey the concept that the alleged big magical being up in the sky that controls the entirety of this ridiculously big universe would even remotly care about the individual actions of a self destructive species of ape inhabiting a small planet on the ass end of, at best, a mid sized galaxy is completely beyond me. You wanna put Creationism in a theology or philosophy class, yea sure thats cool but you don't teach grammar in a Math class for the same reasons that you don't teach philosophy in a science class. You don't like what the current scientific theory has to say on a certain subject go prove them wrong.

Okay okay, so I hadn't heard of Jesus Camp until this thread, so I went to youtube and started watching some small clips...you guys, that is a really funny thing.

There was one clip, the girl is talking about christian rock and then she speaks on Britney Spears...well, semi quoted is:

"Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan...they like...sing about guys and girls, and as a christian, I don't believe in that."

Apparently the youth of today believes that we are all one gender and we're asexual!

Oh Jesus Camp

All I can say is "they are talking in tongues to Bush".

Well, I'm back. I guess you can say it's cultish and fake. I'm 50% against 'my' youthgroup. The pastors are hell bent to have so many new people come to the church, that we get so many people. No one ever talks to everyone, they only talk with their friends and gossip while they are there. It's all just small circles of people standing everywhere...It's rediculous. So yeah, I agree with everyone in this thread. Inlcluding that what we say is in tongues to Bush. I love that.

Pz.

AND GOD BLESS O.o;;;

Yeah, we've got some religious nuts in Indiana. I worked with a woman who knew Jim Jones (Jonestown, mass suicide in South America), he had shown up at her door one day to get her to join his congregation, only to get chased off by her father and his shotgun.

I also went to a non-denominational young Christian brainwashing weekend called Faith Quest. Sleep deprivation, chanting, peer pressure, all the things you need to convince a teenager to accept god as his/her lord and savior. After that weekend I stopped calling myself a Christian. I think I was the only one that didn't have a forehead of zits after the weekend, since I was probably the only one that didn't go up front and have the preacher make a cross in oil on my forehead. The dumbest move was going out with a chick a few years later that had recognized me from that weekend - cute and sweet doesn't make up for religious nut, and religious women make for really bad rebound relationships.

I did a few years of church camp when I was a pre-teen. It was a good experience overall. I remember the 4-square, Euchre, trying to sail a boat into a strong headwind and never making it more than 50 feet out from shore, and having a young girl dress me up as a woman for a talent show.

All this and the Muslim terrorists are supposed to be the religious fanatics?
