So I work in a hotel. I can understand people not wanting to stay in a smoking room if they don't smoke. That's fine. I understand people not wanting to stay in a non-smoking room that smells like smoke, that's ok too.

Here is where my problem is:
Be honest about it and tell me that you think cigarette smoke stinks. No, you don't have an allergy to cigarette smoke. You just don't like it. It won't kill you to smell the smoke, you just don't like the smell.

It may be even halfway believable if there was actually smoke in there. There isn't. Stop lying to my face with that cigarette allergy bullshit. I know it isn't true. The closest thing to an allergy is asthma. If there is no smoke, just the smell of smoke, it's not gonna bother that either, now is it?

Now about the dried up jizz stains on the TV remote....

I wasn't even aware they had smoking/non-smoking rooms in hotels. :O

7 Smoking rooms, 50 Non-Smoking rooms.

All Smoking rooms are on the top floor, and suites are not available in smoking.

actually, I am... lol
But only the actual smoke, not the lingering stench.

I've put up with smokers my entire life, and although I do have asthma, cigarette smoke, and other smoke makes my nose red and itchy, besides triggering my asthma and making me cough. Depending on how much smoke I'm around, my eyes will get red and watery too, People do have *smoke* allergies, which vary, cigarette smoke because of the smell is pretty common. Smoke isn't just air, it's particles in the air.

A smoke allergy is one thing.

Bitching about dying because someone smoked a cigarette in a room 3 days ago is another thing and total bullshit.

Does anyone know what Capnophobia is?

Fear of smoking. There is a name for the phobia, but not for the alergy.

Some people's allergies are greater than others. My sister's boyfriend is so allergic to dogs that if one is in a car she needs to vacuum it out completely before he can go in it, and even then he'll have some discomfort. It has nothing to do with a phobia of dogs, just a very strong alergy. I'd imagine it's far far more inconvieniant for the person with the allergy than it is for you on a day to day basis.

I'm allergic to it to. I start coughing, weezing. But not from the linger, only when I breath is in person. That shit kills me; huge chest pains and everything.

Yeah, I'm that way with a lot of things. Like Poison Ivy. No joke, I get even near it and I get it completely all over my body. Benedryl, a fuckin allergy medicine, I'm allergic too. I swell up, get hives, and need to go to the hospital because if I take too much I could swell my throat closed. Yeah, I got problems >.> Though, cigarette smoke could do that I don't think that remnants could.

But there is no allergy to the smell of cigarettes. If there is, I can't find anything on the internet that mentions it anywhere. It talkes about smoke, and avoiding wood smoke and tobacco smoke. Because of the smoke, not the smell.

These people are in the Smokey Mountains. Don't you think that is a bad place to go if you have an allergy to smoke?

That's because of the dog's hair that he still feels like shit when he gets into a place a dog has been. Even vacuumed they'll still be hair to mess with him. The hair is what people are allergic to, not the dog which is the case in this thread... People are not allergic to the smell of smoke just the actual smoke itself. Smells do not cause allergies, plain and simple.

Cigar/pipe smoke smells lovely though.

From everything I've read, the smoke itself is what causes the "alergy".

That's why wood smoke is always right next to cigarette smoke on the list of things that can cause allergies. Car exhaust is also on that list in most cases.

Yeah, sure, there are 599 aditives in cigarettes, and therefore plenty of things to be alergic to, right? Right.

Did you know things made the list such as water, Rum, Rosemary oil, Dandelion Root Solid Extract, Honey, Kola Nut Extract, Lime oil, Mandarin oil, Cinnimon leaf oil, Beet Juice concentrate, Spearmint oil, Raisen Juice Concentrate, etc.

The only 2 aditives I have found that aren't used in food as well as cigarettes:
Mate absolute, extract, oil & leaves
Vetiver oil

Yes, I know cigarettes are bad for you. Yes, I know smoking will be my demise. Yes, Smoke makes some people cough. There was no smoke in the room, it just smelled like a cigarette.

My OP isn't about people being pussies over 2nd hand smoke. That room didn't smell like cigarette smoke to him, it smelled like a refund. That's what my bitching is about.

This compares to where i work to some extent...

"ZOMG my son is like SOOO allergic to mushrooms so pleassse dont put them on my pizza or he will liek die lol."

Listen bitch, i know your son isnt allergic to mushrooms, and you just dont want them. I am not an incomptetent retard, if you would simply state "i do not want mushrooms on my hoagie/pizza/whatever", i wont put them there. Dont make up some bullshit scare-tactic to make me not put the shit on your food.

One of my 8 pet peeves at work...makes me wanna choke someone out...!

Your Hotel should just simply charge double to the whiners. Better yet they should double the tips to you guys.

Then they can whine all they want. They can even whine about all the high costs their bitching causes.

for all the idiots that say nobody can be allergic to cigarette smoke, please get off the video games and actually learn something. many people are allergic to smoke including myself. Cigarette smoke contains a number of toxic chemicals and irritants that can linger for days in things such as drapes, clothing, etc. these allergens are what make it uncomfortable, and yes some have it worse than others. plain and simple common sense. i wont dispute the fact some people may be making trippys job harder than usual, thats the burden of having a public relations job.

Bitching about smoke that was in the room days ago is understandably retarded. I'm a non-smoker FYI. If there "WAS" a little smoke in the room... open a window, turn on a fan, shut up. If someone is smoking around you, inhaling it is bad for your health (go see someone with lung cancer or a family who's breadwinning father died of it for assurance). If your stuck in a place owned by someone else or their vehicle, what does that tell you? Leave, move out, never go back unless they are willing to be considerate of you. If it's your home, car, w/e, drop them off at the next corner if they refuse to put it out, or tell em to leave.

I'm allergic to a number of things, and I know that I don't sleep as well in a room where there's been smoke recently. It's not an issue to the point that I would leave a hotel if I had to stay in a smoking room, but I'd definitely ask for a different room so I could sleep better. I sort of feel like the hospitality industry should accomodate that. Most of the time I spend in hotels is on the road between Chicago and Kansas City, and long highway driving stints bug my allergies a bit too, and that stuff adds up, so it's worth it to ask for a change of room. If someone flipped out about it, I'd just go back to the room . . . I guess I feel like the whining can go both ways on this one.

Edit: Also, I dunno if smoke allergies go this far, but I do know that some food allergies ARE lethal. Peanut allergies are infamous for this . . . people have to inspect candy manufacturers to make sure that the same machines that mash up peanuts don't mash up chocolate beans for non-peanut candy, because that much of a contamination could kill someone.
