After tackling giant robots, "Transformers" producer Tom DeSanto is turning his attention to superheroes, securing the rights to NCsoft and Cryptic Studio's vidgame "City of Heroes."

Plan is to adapt the massively multiplayer online role-playing game into a live-action feature and then transition it to television in some form.

Project revolves around a group of superheroes who live in Paragon City and must team in order to fight an invasion of aliens known as the Rikti.

In the game, players design their own superhero character and pay a monthly fee of $14.99 to battle supervillains, aliens, madmen and other criminals. An expansion of the game also enables players to create their own villainous character.

"City of Heroes" first bowed at retailers in 2004 and turned into a franchise, spawning sequel "City of Villains" and a comicbook series published by Top Cow Prods.

NCsoft also produces the games "Lineage," "Auto Assault" and "Guild Wars."

DeSanto sparked to the project because it offered "one-stop shopping" for characters and plots. "You also haven't seen a big superheroes vs. aliens movie," he said. "I see this as the next big superhero franchise."

DeSanto produced "Transformers," with Don Murphy and Lorenzo di Bonaventura, setting up the project at DreamWorks after securing the rights from toymaker Hasbro. He also exec produced the first two "X-Men" films at Fox.

I... I don't know what to say.

Personally, I think it'd be a great kind of tongue-in-cheek campy movie. Have the Shaun of the Dead guys tackle it, please.

If it was going to be something like Mystery Men, I'd be all over it. But I don't think that's how it's going to be.

wow... City of Heroes wasn't even a very good game.

Arguable; Regardless of the game itself or its success or lack thereof recently the storyline - overall - is a good one from a comic book enthusiasts perspective.

In the film, the Phalax take on the mystery behind the evil and overwhelming DOOR MISSIONS.

Meh, just take RoZ and turn it into a movie.
Make CoP the sequel.

And a city full of ruthless thugs... purse-snatching everyone. Dun-Dun-Duuuuuuuun

Hey now, I played CoH for a decent stretch a year or so ago as a break from FFXI. I personally really enjoyed it, but the reason I enjoyed it so much was because I and a few other friends irl all played it together. At the time, I lived with two of my friends and we also played it together, which was a freaking blast. Now, once I tried playing it when my friends weren't on or I wasn't acutally grouped with them. Well.. that's when it got dull and boring.

That and the company started fucking with my main character because of that whole copyright crap. I had made an awesome Protoman (from Megaman) and my name was indeed Protoman-01. I logged on one day and parts of my costume had been stripped/remove.. the funny thing was they only did it to my main costume (i had up to the 3rd costume change unlocked) but it still pissed me off since that was the main one i used. One thing I did love about CoH was the comic books that they mailed out to their subscribers. They were pretty awesome for being a gift.

And I do agree, the actual baseline story behind Paragon City, was pretty cool.

Ahh, the good memories were good. A movie sounds pretty cool to me.

Nice, Protoman. :-D
I used to also play CoH, but then took a long time break from it.

I never played CoV (Vilains version of CoH); but always wanted to.
Either way, I guess we'll see how this turns out in terms of a movie.
Hopefully good directors nab this one.
