Yesteryday, I decided to farm Trumbling Truffle for the Fungus Hat to give away to one of the lowbies in my LS, as that would have been something that -I- would have wanted someone to do for me as a nice gesture when I was starting out. Anyway, I run through the series of tunnels there to the area where he spawns, killing everything on my way for chips and shrooms to net me about an extra 10k gil or so. I arrive, I kill stuff for a good 10 minutes, and a 19 DRK comes strolling through the cave behind me. I recognize the name as a newbie who I helped out on the PS2 release, with how to equip items, how to move around, how to do emotes, basic macros, even walked him thru the Lauan shield quest in Sandy. I hadn't seen him the whole way there up there, and I wave and try to be polite to him, asking him if he knew if the NM spawned anytime soon.

"Yeah, 15 min ago"

I'd been here about 10-15 min already, so I was curious, as I hadnt seen him and thought he may have been mistaken.

"You just ran up here though"

"Fuck you man dont' tell me where i have and haven't been"

O.O Pardon? lol... Apparently there was some hostility in this guy, so I asked him if he was actually hunting the NM or just EXPing off the mobs?

"Whatever, get out of my EXPing area, go farm somewhere for your level, there are tons better of places"

Apparently he'd died to the monster, RAN back to town, got some mithkabobs, and came back to fight it again.

"Isn't it a little strong for you if it does spawn? I don't really want you dying, and I am looking for the drop, so we can help each other...?"

"Fuck u u idiot, you have a small brain etcetc..." (can't remember all what he said, but he basically keeps responding like this, saying this game would be better without jerks like me in it, etc). This guy would NOT listen to reason or comprimise, hell, he even claims to have the hat himself. Which doesn't make any sense to ME, because he could very likely die to the NM again (without his 2hr he expended) and he coldnt' get the drop if he wanted it. Confused, I /blist add him (4th ever /sigh), and leave that valley to farm in the non-spawn areas to kill time. I'd rather not offer up the guy's name as I don't think that's really that important, but I mainly posted it to see what everybody's thoughts on NM hunting are. I know what my beliefs are, pure and simple:

-If its name isn't Red, you don't have it.
-Whoever claims it, kills it or dies trying. (Although I would heal someone who snagged it, but this basically means no Call For Helps, preventing a drop for -anybody-)

How was I to know he left the area, or if he was even there in the first place? Unappreciateive and stubborn thickskulled individuals like this just make me want to avoid ANY hunt spot. Truffle isn't even camped 99% of the time. Think this is a case of the person being a jerk, me being a jerk, or just misunderstanding?

You're NM hunting...It doesn't matter if you're too high of a level for the area. Besides it doesn't sound like you were killing everything in the area anyway so he really had no reason to complain about that. It wouldn't even matter if he had been camping that NM for the last 8 hours and you happened to show up...kill the NM and get the drop just by running by the area, you fought it and it gave the drop - end of story! NM hunting is a competition...mind you if someone grabbed the NM before I could get to it I'd heal them throughout the battle to keep them alive - but if you get it first it's yours and if you die fighting it someone else gets it.
He sounds like an ass to me and I really don't think your should concern yourself with him. You sounded polite and even offered to help him out - if he wanted to be a dink about it forget about him. Besides there is no such thing as "My XPing Area" and thinking an area is yours is just silly.
No worries :)

I dont know, I know Rune in-game and he can be pretty rude. Lol jokes...yeah screw him Rune, should just went on a killing spree and pissed him off more :D.

Och... Aye!

I agree.

It seems like alot of the new people using the PS2 version of Final Fantasy XI have... "Split Personality Syndrome".

In my earlier White Mage days, I recall partying with a "new" Paladin in Yhoator Jungle. He seemed pretty nice when I first met him, yeah. But later on, when I was partying in different groups and I'd see someone talk later on, he'd usually say something snide, rude, hostile, or make an idle threat in return.

I'm thinkin' "Whoa... This dude just pulled a complete one-eighty."

Now... If any of you know me in game, you'll know that my typical demeanor is that I'm a very nice and generous person, but at the same time, I can't pass up a good joke. I love making quips, zingers, and one-liners all in good sport however (If I've hurt anyone's feelings, I really don't mean to).

Someone had said something in /shout , I replied with a funny, quirky comment, and then this Paladin makes a comeback that somewhat sounds like I've threatened him in some sort of way.

But, anyway...

My stance on Notorious Monster camping & hunting?

Runekane, I believe you had the right of way and that Dark Knight had no reason to speak to you that way (Other than the fact that he's a PS2-Player)...

...

In my studies, and observant research in the interaction between MMORPG communities, I've learned something very apparent...

This is simply an observation of mine, however.

I've been through alot of different online games... I played "Phantasy Star Online" for about 3 to 4 years... Played alot of Korean-based MMORPGs that were all still in Beta-Testing stages (Ragnarok Online, Priston Tales, Talesweaver, Lineage II) ... And clearly, looking at Final Fantasy XI and the way it started...

Back when FFXI for PC first came out, I was utterly AMAZED to see how courteous everyone was being toward one another! It was almost as if we were in a virtual paradise.

But then... As SOON as the PS2 version comes out, right on schedule, it goes straight to hell. The console gamers ruining the economy, and the once-natural order of things... So much that it even caught Square-Enix's attention. Now that is a very bad sign. This is how mentoring was born, do you recall?

In Laymen's terms, Square-Enix basically said to us: "Hey, the PS2 noobs are F-ing up the game and it's economy. Instead of us dealing with the problem, we know how you PC gamers play. You guys are the smart ones. We'll create 'Mentoring' and let the noobs ask you what to do. It'll take a load off our hands."

An interesting approach, no doubt. But still does not quite solve the problem. One of my friends, Shenhua (Mithra) had said: "What?! No! We ALREADY know that they're gonna mess up the server! Why don't we just GIVE them a server of their own!" ... But they couldn't do that, now could they? Because even though in some respects that would be a just action, it would also be very unfair and biased. Square-Enix would be no better than Ragnarok Online's creators... the infamous Gravity Corp. ...

Long story short. I still believe you're in the right, Rune.

You were there first. If the monster's name is in red, it's your's. If it's purple, it's theirs. That Dark Knight was just being greedy, and getting too carried away, like most "new people" are. And it caught up with him. Just like how it caught up, or will catch up with everyone who is being flamed, or spoken of in an ill manner on this flame board.

Just keep on doing what you're doing, Rune. Your efforts will not go under-appreciated.

Us "PC Gamers" are still here, and you have our support; mine included.

I kinda view NM hunting as a no holds bar, anything goes. Meaning anyone camping it or not can grab it. That if the person that grabed it and is about to die then they should not expect any outside help like cureing. And here is where I offer my view as except: U have to trigger a NM with an item like Bubbling Bernie then that should be the person that triggered it his/her kill. If you get upset over this then simple, DO NOT NM Hunt.

I have in the past and proably in the future have cured people that managed to get Leaping Lizzy. If its in my power to help someone from dieing and loseing exp then I do so. And I have managed to fight Leaping Lizzy as a lower level but failed to killed it and people were watching. I did not expect help cause it is competiton.

If that guy was whinny about it I would have camped it anyways and ignored him.

Oy I totally don't agree with this...You can't lob a whole slew of new characters into one category just because they're on the PS2. Truthfully I'm not a PC gamer - yes I'm on the PC version of FFXI but it's only the 2nd PC game i've ever played. I've met a ton of really awesome PS2'ers, great people, great players! This argument always makes me laugh because I'm sure the Japanese players felt the exact same when we logged on. Whenever you see a large influx of new players you're going to see a lot of things get messed up - we were no different. So cut them some slack and help them out! I've also met a lot of crappy PC players who are really rude, so it's not the system you play on - it's the person you are! :)

It's not really the PS2ers. It's younger players in general *awaits flame*.
Think about it, though. Generally, the players on the PS2 are on that because they can't afford a computer or just dont' care to have one and already have a pimped out PS2, which generally means mom and dad don't want them playing "the devil's game" (haha) on their computer and risk "all those virsuses". So, the average age of the PS2 gamer comes down just a little bit. It's just a generalization though. Think about how parents deal with kids at 14, then think about how they deal with them at say 18.

At 14, you picture the typical teenageer:
"Screw you mom, I wanna eat candy all day, I want to skate all day, whine whine whine! I HATE YOU"
"OK honey you get your way"
"YAY! I love you mom because you let me do what i want when I want because you're so weak-willed and I'm conniving a piece of crap!"

At 18...
"I wanna do this, I wanna do that, I hate you!"
"Get a job, slacker. Apply for college. Make something out of yourself."

Basically, MOST (not all) younger players expect results when they whine, it's not just PS2ers. I have a few LS members who are young and who are very respectable, then there are a few who happen to ALWAYS ask for help, and who ALWAYS expect people to do things for THEM because they are whoever they are, never offering a helping hand in return because they are "too low". There's always something you can do ^^ One thing I like to do for our rich crafters is surprise them with clusters of crystals, or stacks. A little way of saying "Thank you for not being a "dink"" (Sorry Sabs, had to steal your word!)

Heh, yeah... I was gonna say that too. And they not only have to deal with the NA PC version being released... but just when they had almost got us whipped into shape, out comes the NA PS2 version. And yet... I have never partied with a Japanese player who wasn't kind and willing to lend a hand.

Hey I think all this stuff is crap i mean like hey some ppl are idiots on ps2 but there are some on pc and some are younger and some are older they are everywhere. You cant put a label on one group. Honestly i have met alot of idiots from different places. And i play on ps2 only bcuz we dont have ne pcs in my house

Again I agree with you Rune totally ... since PS2 came out we have a younger crowd and this game is just NOT for them ... when you have an 11 year old trying to make gil and yada yada they just have no concept ...

The game is for the age group of 17 years of age or older ... granted we also have some 15 year olds in our LS and they are doing very well ... they are more "grown up" then your average 15 year old ... but then one is PC the other PS2 and has been playing MMORPG's for a few years ...

Point is it specifically says on the box when you buy it ... For the age of 17 years or older ... Parents need to start watching what their kids want to purchase imho ...

As far as NM hunting ... it's dog eat dog ... if you get it first it's yours ... bottom line ...

Hey well some of us younger kids are a bit more grown up then you think i mean, not to act conceited,But im more of a grown up 15 year old stuck in a 12 year old's body for instance i dont bother with being arrogant or naive because i know that if you wait and work hard you can get whatever you want of course i do have my 12 year old moments but hey dont go blaming us younger kids if you do that you are acting more stupid then some of the most stupid 12 year olds (and trust me ive seen my share) and ive played the Final fantasy games since i was 5 years old
and i am not going to let some whiny 17 year olds get in my way to becoming a L75 Dark Knight/Samurai (my dream)

Amnathyr:

Basically, MOST (not all) younger players expect results when they whine, it's not just PS2ers.

In no way shape or form did I generalize any age group. I did say that some of the younger players on the LS are very patient and realize it takes work to achieve goals. Some older people have PLENTY of 12 year old moments, but I in no way said that everything wrong with the game stems from 12-15 year olds. Maybe if you took time to read the whole post instead of saying "OMG you're blasting kids" you would have noticed this, as I believe I adressed the whole issue.

Yes, the PS2 version of course attracts a younger crowd; I can count the amount of people over 30 who I know that own a PS2 on my hands. MOST early-teens have a console gaming system of one sort or another, and they hear about a great game everybody's playing (See: FFXI, Everquest <--never played that) and that has an established player base. Now, most of these kids come in and immediately want to have what everyone else has because well, its cool and fun. Their way of getting what they want? Probably the same way their pushover parents bought them consoles in the first place; by whining and complaining until they get what they want. Note, this doesn't apply to EVERY person, but it certainly must apply to some. They can only do what they know, especially if they have no previous experience for online community other than lounging in AOL teen chat rooms where I remember there being no etiquitte at all. You can't blame them; I just chose to avoid those that want to "use" the higher level players because they want things NOW.

Another thing... how the hell can you have a legacy or legendary status if you have someone hold your hand the whole way and hand you things time and time again? I could only imagine historical figures like Alexander the Great sitting in the town square shouting for followers or weapons. ;)

I don't see how I'm acting more stupid than the supposed 12 year olds by simply making an observation and stating my opinion. At least I offer up points and back up what I believe in and why, instead of throwing out insults without warrant. If you believe I'm speaking to you, Amnathyr, then so be it. It was just an observation, that's all, and if you took offense to ANYTHING I said, well, please get over it, because it's what I believe. ^^

srry bout that
I've been around too many idots on this game that it has clouded my judgement i feel now that i should respect your opinion
Oh yeah i feel stupid,no amazed to admit it but almost 99.9% percent of 12 year olds are whiny spoiled brats
My pride has been broken too many times to understand the true meaning of this but now that i have pushed it aside i do
 <-- feel like total Moronic Idiot

Younger Player on PS/2

I have generally enjoyed playing this game and party with many different people, regardless of age, gender, nationality, or even taste in jokes. I had an unfortunate experience recently that was just completely unacceptable for me. I was in a party to complete the 3 nations mission, and much to my dismay, I was cursed out by a young kid (not sure age) after I managed to kill the Warchief in Ghelsba outpost, not knowing another younger member of the party decided to take a walk for personal enjoyment.

I generally have no complaints about age / sex / nationality, but in this case, the behavior from these kids were just impossible for me. I will qualify by saying that i am an older player, and I am just not used to seeing people behave like this.

The sad thing is I just can't imagine how their parents / teacher / neighbors ever deal with such behavior in real life. Disband / Blist -- my very first. :(
