What the hell are they, and why do I need them on my Media Player so I can watch movies I downloaded?
And where can I get some? I got this cheesy new movie I want to watch...

co-dec
compressor de-compressor.

raw video files are way too large to transport over the internet. you use a compressor to shrink the file to a internet friendly size and a de-compressor to un-shrink it and play it on your media player.

the most popular codec on the internet is Divx. you get it from divx-dot-com. after you install it your media player will automatically be able to play divx compressed movie files.

Ace Mega Codecs Pack

The only codecs pack you'll ever need, even comes with it's own version of the the windows media player that doesn't have all that extra crap you don't need ^^

installing random codec packs can sometimes lead to problems.
theres really no need to install codecs you dont need, thou most packs install all or most of the "common" ones.

a handy utility for finding out what audio/visual codecs you need for most any file youll come across can be found here. after that a quick google can usually find the proper decoder in 5min or less.

another option is to give it a go in mp classic

or in a player that doesnt depend on decompressor filters like vlc media player.
