I bought this game a few weeks after it came out. Tried it once, didn't like it(I didn't understand it) and quit. That was a big mistake because this game is amazing.
It takes the tower defense idea and takes its own direction with it, making it no longer a purely defensive game. You build towers very similar to in Warcraft, making your own mazes. You grab comets for resources to build buildings, such as turrets and bases. You build up troops and then send them at your opponent's base. You operate as a space ship that flies around, builds, collects comets, etc. You can be hurt by enemy anti-air, though dying doesn't end the game, it just costs you about 10 seconds while you respawn.
It's complex, with lots of different kinds of troops and defenses, both land and air.
You can do up to 3 player co-op against pre-set campaign scenarios, trying to breach the enemy base has a puzzle element to it.
You can also do up to 4 player versus multiplayer which gets incredibly frantic sometimes, especially if you're playing with really aggressive players who want to attack your turrets with their turrets.
Here's a video demonstrating gameplay at a very BASIC level.

Basically, right now this is what me and my friends play when we're together. It's REALLY hard to find a game that everyone likes, especially when some of your friends are PC guys and raise their nose at everything but this is pretty much universal. It's worth the $10 easily.
