Common Courtesy

I have my mentor flag up all the time but it doesn't mean i know everything and if someone asks me something i don't know i don't lie. i have it up cause over the months i have played i turned down over 700k in rewards for helping people do kazham keys, 2-3 dragon, escorts, nm camping and so on.

Sadly this has been the case since the mentor flag came out. The reason you don't see too many vet players with them up is that they don't want to be lumped in with the pompous pricks or useless unintelligible douchebags that keep it up to nab attention.

Don't get me wrong i'm sure there's more than a few people who can live up to the icon, but 99% are just useless asswipes looking for attention.

I'm sick of the lack of common courtesy anymore. I honestly wonder if the median age for this game is 12. A problem arises? Yell at that mother-f@#(*&! Lets insult him and sling mud all over his name! HAHA I'll tell all my friends and no one will ever like you nyah nyah!

Sigh...

Example Problem: Leveling on weapons in sauromogue at 30. A thf comes along and starts killing them while LFG. Not enough are popping for my party to chain. Puller goes crazy and starts cussing him out in /party. Other players agree and there is general resentment.

Solution: Me being the party leader, I told them to let me handle it. I sent the thf a tell explaining that we were exping here and asking him not to drive us out. His response? "Sure, sorry I didn't know."

/kneel. /bow. You not only got a party to agree to try an unconventional EXP location, which already puts you above average in my books, but you handled the misunderstanding with the thief in a way that should be a good times post. Good Times is disproportionately underposted compared to the Flameboard. It's a sadly accurate representation of how things work. This was a nice read anyway.

The mentor status needs to be unlocked at 75. I love helping people. That's what mentorship should be about. At 30, I was a newb. Truly, it was the blind leading the blind. Until a player reaches 75, I don't think s/he should be entitled to official recognition of "experience". I used my mentor status from whm30 to whm 36, and then when I stopped whm, from blm18 to blm30 - a cumulative 18 levels. Not just any 18 levels - 18 levels of inexperienced newbdom. I was well intentioned, but hardly qualified. I think the bar needs to be raised on the /mentor status.

Another good post Pomp. Damn you're a smart one^^.

Personally I've been embarrassed to use the mentor status for wayyyyy over a year now.

its not what lv or w/e u r
say u r lv 75 but u no jack about crafting
there is a 30 whm who has 100 cc and all sc at 60
then can s/he have mentor up
thats alot of crafting expersie in that person but not exp

I used it thinking I was doing people a service. Then little by little, being an avid forumgoer, I saw the reputation /mentor users were getting. There were exceptions of course, but it was hardly undeserved. For some reason, I'm WAY too concerned about what people think of me. While I dislike the need to be cookie-cutter in XI, I follow all the "rules" to a T because I'm paranoid about anyone not liking me. Needless to say, my /mentor was off the next time I logged in. Whether it's a good quality or bad, I'm a sheep in the strongest way.

Yeah the mentor flag has been pretty much ruined.

I don't think it should be unlocked at 75, but 50 would be a good median level for it. By 50 you've probably got multiple 30's under your belt and enough general experience with the game to answer any questions a true new player has.

Only people I see with mentor nowadays are people who dont have a linkshell/want to hide thier color. I'm embarressed to put it up too Kat.

Because 99% are little punks who think they're tough for saying 'wut', wear their hats sideways and can recite 2/3 the Eminem songs AND have beaten all the Tony Hawk games?

Hey! I resemble that remark... /cry

In all seriousness, whenever I've gone to skillup and such, I've always been concerned with hurting people's exp and such.

I dunno. You're a pretty standout player Trippy - when do you think you were no longer a newb? That's about when mentorship should be unlocked. Heck, maybe there should be a newb-gate quest to unlock it. I think the Maat battle is one of the best ideas SE had. It's a true test of your knowledge of your job, and noone can help you through it. When I beat Maat, I knew all my playtime wasn't for nothing. Maybe a solo trial of some sorts in the same vein as the Maat battle, as a way to prove at least tentatively, that you know your stuff? I know if at 30 I was faced with such a test of skill, I'd have failed it.

You should definatly have to take a test to be able to get Mentor status, and on top of that have so much play time accumulated, and on top of that have to do a whole bunch of other stuff which someone with alot of experiance would be able to handle easily.

There should be a quest for all this and would be similar to the Maat fight.....except...it wouldnt be a fight. Like how Pomp put it.

When I skill up, level NPC, screw around and kill things.. I ALWAYS check for exp pt's. It's rude to walk up and just kill their mobs. However, if I am there first, and they come over to me in a NON conventional area... tough. Whoever gets there first, pretty simple. The moment you claim a mob I'm after is the end of your exping. >.>
Just be nice.. ask nicely.. and be considerate that you, contrary to popular belief, do not own the world.

I agree also I always believe in givin ppl a chance to redeem thenself and I usually ask nicely b4 resulting to violent tones. I find most ppl are nice enough to just leave if you ask them nicley as oppose to not asking nicely. I dont even keep ppl on my blist to long for the same reason the person cant explain them self if they cant send you tells.

For mentor status how about a sort of quiz. Questions a newbie would be likely to ask? I never use my mentor status unless im running around in Windurst, Bastok or San D'Oria in case any newbies wants to ask a question.

That's not exactally fair... I have put mine back on to be open to help people. I remember at one point people would seek out those with the "Mentor" for information, advice, and help. That said..... i remeber one guy asking me how much I charge for PL-ing. I was confused as I had not mentioned nor implied that I would be a PL for hire. Apparently this guy thought the "Mentor" icon was like a for sales sign. I laughed pretty hard on that one.

In conclusion... <--- Mentor flag is up for what it was made for.

Unfortunatly there are many 70+ players that should have a big "N" instead of "M" in front of thier name.

Maybe there weren't enough legit "M"s around during their treks to 75?
