My F drive isn't showing up, it's my 80 gig harddrive (with all my games :( ). It was working fine yesterday but for some reason it's not working. The HD shows up in my computer but it won't open up and there's no size/whatnot showing up. When I go to the device manager it's there and working :\ Anyone know what might have happened or how it can be fixed? >.>

hmmm. have you added anything or changed anything? have you shut down and restarted?

You're gonna want to run some kind of SMART test on the drive, usually when stuff like that happens it means the drive isn't spinning up properly or something to that effect. There are various utilities you can google to do that from within Windows.

edit: also check its connections, reseat the cables on both ends. Is it external or internal?

Internal, and it seems to be something with the head apparently. The disc spins but it doesn't talk to the computer and vice versa.. hehe.. which means this is prolly a useless HD now :( but gonna get an external device and use it to hook up to my dad's Linux box cause that'll give better information... really wish I had been able to back up my saved games :(

There are some professional services available that can help recover your data to a backup drive, although it costs a pretty penny sometimes.

it costs an assload >.> one guy my dad knows got charged 2000 bucks. I would like my saved games back, but I don't care that much.

I'm guessing you ran a smart test then? And you did check the cables? It could easily be a loose cable. If it's 80GB it probably isn't a SATA drive, so if one side of the PATA cable is slightly loose it might not be talking to the north bridge properly.

it's IDE :P and I did check and ya... the cables are in, even tried new ones.

K so yeah the drive's fucked :)

it makes me sad :( years of saved games.. gone... the thing I'm most sad about is the loss of my level 40ish Necromancer... it was my work in progress of "play to level 99 without a single stat/skill point used" and ya.. half way in Nightmare :(

it can't be scanned ;\ and if I try clicking on it, it says it needs to be formatted.. hehe

Thats why there is win 98 + CMD Prompt w/ tools for debugging.... also. 2 grand only? at my last job a stupid client had a server room catch fire and burn their backup tape. cost em upwords of 18k to have a restore company fix the header on the tape and recover the data.

2k for some private little person that is not a business is a lot of money :(

I know how to do data restoration on drives with a significant amount of damage. PM me if you want. I'll do it for free.

PEBKAC.

There's my good deed for the day.
