Well a couple days ago I had to restart my computer to update windows. Than for some reason when it restarted , it desided to basically not. Ok , basically for HP labtops you have 4 screens you see before you see your main screen. You have the setup screen(f10) than the blank screen , than the loading screen (windowsxp), than that blue screen where you enter you password. Now anywhere in between those steps it would freeze or just stop.It takes 20-30 times to get the main screen and it only works sometimes(the main screen) as in itll only load 1-3 icons on the main screen. So could it be a virus or harddrive? any info will help.

Sounds like something got corrupted. Its gonna be hard because you have a laptop, but if you could get that hard drive on another computer you could investigate. Otherwise you might be stuck using those HP recovery disks and starting out fresh.

1. CheckDisk

2. Start > Run > type "msconfig" > Go to Startup on the tab

2a. Disable any start up program that isn't need to be started after log into screen

2b. You may have a lot of program running all at once

3. Control Panal > Administrative Tools > Services

3a. Service Is not a thing to be mess with, you will need a friend that know how to tweak the service educationally.

Possible Problem you may have alot of stuff to be booted, and sometime it cause a delay on loading windows up. I had this problem before, my friend disable a lot of bunch of stuff in the service, and now my Window XP (Booting screen) boot very fast.

But you may have another issue cuz is in between window xp booting and blue screen login screen.

Is best to checkdisk during Bootup, it takes along time, but it can find any corrupted file and trying to fix it, if this is a repeated corruption, then you may need a new HD

I would say start it in safe mode and run a virus scan (hitting F8 during the first screen that starts up) and see if anything comes up. Could be a virus, could be spyware, I dunno. If all else fails take it to some tech people and see if they can fix it.

Sometimes the best thing to do is to reinstall.

Just had a computer do that. Tried repair install, upgrade, roll back service pack 2, system restore, sfc /scannow, nothing.

Not sure what to tell you but thats what I did, and if I did it sooner, i'd have saved alot of time. It must have been some kind of virus, never figured it out.

You could of course try all the things above if a reinstall is not something you prefer.
