I was wondering if anyone could help me fix this. I just got my computer fixed as it was a piece of crap a few weeks ago by my uncle as it was freezing and the sorts. He used recovery disks and the such and it was fine. This was a few weeks ago and my computer was as if it was brand new. Anyway, I reinstalled FFXI last night and it was working fine for the night. Today I was attempting to go online and my computer was back on the fritz. Playonline wouldn't open and if it did it was on the 8th try. When it didn't it would just show the window and my whole computer would freeze, not even Ctrl+alt+delete would work, which a person like me depends on.

When I got the computer fixed, my uncle said it was FFXI but I assumed it had something to do with windower I had sitting on the computer. I guess now it has to be the game, I just don't get how any of the discs can do this.

If anyone know anything I can do to fix it or how to get rid of it, I'd really appreciate it.

Backup all your important data/files/etc. and just re-image the entire thing(ie- format your hard drive and re-install everything). Recovery disks are only good for that and drink coasters.

Get Avast to see any virus had found...
then if nothing, format HD
then if still not working, get a new PC
or..

2 things:
1) im guessing you have a Toshiba.
2) im also guessing you have Vista.

If those 2 are correct then your fucked. Toshiba laptops suck so bad.... theres a reason their the only laptop manufacture that still supply's recovery CD/DVD's. Also, even though theres a Vista POL its pretty much a hit or miss. Some people it works perfictly others its trash... In your case sounds like trash.

And no Vandoura, If you would read, you would see it was just reformatted. There is little chance that he has a virus this fast. Possible... But not likely.

Thanks for the suggestions but I figured out the problem.

It wasn't FFXI at all. I had a Nintendo WiFi USB connector plugged into the back of my computer that I totally forgot about. I realised it was a little melted and so I pulled it out. Everythings working fine again.

Sorry for the hassle. ><

That is really random. O_o

How did it melt? It was probably causing some kind of short.

Riiiiiight... I'll just toss out my old P2 350 Toshiba laptop that STILL WORKS, and my 1.5 year old Satellite that's thrown in my backpack every other day as well, because Toshiba sucks so bad. Toshiba gives you recovery CDs because, hey, maybe someone wants to reformat their hard drive (and NOT have 10~20 gb sucked up in recovery partition ala HP)?

I've been selling computers for a year and a half now while working through college... funny thing is I sell more Toshiba laptops than any other brand, yet I see more HP laptops returned defective within the lousy 14 days we offer than any other brand. And let's not even get started on Gateway, Dell, or cheaperHP Compaq. The only laptop brands I'd put my money on other than Toshiba is Sony or Acer (the latter of which we don't sell, and the latter of which does package recovery discs I believe).

I can't argue with you about Vista... but I think I've derailed enough.

On topic ...

Huh. Sounds like the USB adapter was probably sucking up wayyyy more power than it was supposed to? You might be careful with that particular USB port in the future, if the adapter wasn't (melted?) before trying to use it. USB ports die all the time, but I haven't heard of one eating electricity for breakfast...

Melting is bad... See if your laptop's BIOS will report voltage readings. (I somehow doubt it.) You may see if your manufacturer of the laptop offers some kind of BIOS reading utility to get that information.

I am extremely happy with my Compaq laptop. I even dropped it once from 4' onto concrete, and the laptop is a scuff/scratch worse for the wear, but in otherwise perfect operating condition. I also lug it around school/friends house/other places in my backpack...

I think HP has really improved their product line in the last couple years. That said, Asus is also really fuggin nice.

System recovery is incredibly useful for people who don't know what they're doing. Seriously. I've been doing PC tech support over the phone for nearly a year and it's friggin useful as hell.
