Okay...well the last couple of weeks have been absolute Tech Support Hell. I've probably spent close to 20 hours waiting or on hold with tech support and I'm about to eat my own eyes.

First I was getting disconnected from FFXI every hour at the exact same time for a month - but I think I've fixed that for now. Now when I try to watch a video and play FFXI (dvd, avi etc.) my screen starts freaking out. It's like the monitor starts turning off and on and the only way to stop it is to log out to the POL screen and shut down the movie before logging into FFXI again - So I'm looking for help with this problem and another one I'll mention below. I have a GeForce FX 5600 and I'm not sure what I should do to remedy this problem. I updated my drivers and have DivX 6.0 so any suggestions on how to fix this would be great as Fafnir camps are 8===D w/o videos to watch.

Okay second problem and completely unrelated to FFXI but more related to my video problem. My DVDRW is a moron. It's trying to read a burnt data DVD as a CD-Rom and low and behold thinks the disc is corrupt. The DVD works fine on both my roommates laptop and computer so I don't know what the problem is. It read it yesterday morning okay after a bit of in and out action (rawr you filthies!) but then yesterday decided it liked the short bus more and tried to read it as a CD ROM. I'm totally stumped and am about ready to take my computer out back and shoot it - any help with any of these problems would be greatly appreciated and will be rewarded with tarutaru lap dances and after hours favors. Thanks so much!

For the 5x series of GeForce cards + FFXI, I would recommend the factory provided drivers. Seriously, FFXI hates something about GeForce 5x series.

For the DVD problem - you may just need to clean the lens (they have kits at Kmart that you can buy to do that). Otherwise, you may need a new drive.

As for the disconnects, could be anything really. I know on dial up - I would ALWAYS get disconnected at 11:10 for like a month straight. I have no idea why but yea, could be your ISP. It could also be your computer might have a virus or rootkit or something. May wanna run spyware scans/Virus Scans. (Try using Spybot S&D it seems to be the best for removing rootkits/spyware, then do a virus scan.) The disconnect problem is most likely nothing you can remedy via your PC.

Yeah I fixed the connection problem, it turned out that when they updated their virus detect program it was actually booting everyone who d/l it every hour but it was so small most people didn't notice - unless you played FFXI and it booted you from the game every time.

The DVD player reads DVDs and CDs fine but it won't read this data DVD even though everyone else's computer is fine reading it. Due to the fact it can read some things and not others I'm going to rule out the fact that the lens may need to be cleaned. It's just not recognizing it as a DVD and trying to read it as a CD ROM. Also it read the DVD fine yesterday and now it doesn't feel like it - I'm gonna shoot it!

FFXI is the most finicky MMO for signal loss i've ever seen. any other mmo's I play (WoW, DAOC, DDO, RO, GW) seem to have no real problems with split second signal loss. my router right now out in shilo is a wireless and it's a piece of junk. i got tiny bits of signal loss for just split seconds but it auto-disconnected me from XI.

sounds to me like you need to replace the dvd drive... it's pretty simple and a new decent DVD drive is dirt cheap if you know a good store.

you would be surprised that it could be the drive. when drives start crapping out, they start slow with every once in a while, not being able to read a disk or it says its a cd instead of dvd. after a while, the drive will not read anything. and eventually, the computer wont even recognize the drive as a real drive anymore.
i doubt the drive is doing that, but you never know.

Okay here's a pic of my drive setup...it's fucked up because it says I have two drives when I've only got one. I tried to uninstall the Woweua4fouegtaow one and leave the Nec alone but everytime I reboot it brings the CDRom drive back....any suggestions? I just updated my Firmware and I'm still having the same problem.

EDIT: The one that says CD Drive D: Is my actual DVD drive with the DVD that it thinks is a CD Rom inside of it, I don't know what the hell that DVD Drive G is...it's never worked

directX 6.0????? are you sure its 6.0? lol thats really old... you may want to download the new version.

I'm not a genuine windows user and may be the victim of pirated software, which makes getting the newest directX really hard. D:

PS Thanks GhostinmyShell for the whole lot of no help, I'm well aware that the Vid card isn't the best but it's an older computer and regardless of what model it is it shouldn't be doing this - it worked fine before.

She said DivX 6.0 not DirectX 6.0, unless that was a typo in the OP.

Sab I have a genuine copy of Windows (for some reason) and can download DirectX 9.0c redist to send to you if you want. PM me and I'll give you my IM info, time I'll be on, a/s/l, favorite mexican dish, preferred colour of panties, etc.

DVD drives are cheaper than sex with a hooker - you can get a new one for $35 from NCIX before shipping.

I just bought this DVD Drive when ToAU came out though so it's really new...I'd rather not replace it! And that would be all kind of sexy CmdrFly, I would totally even wear the sexy panties for that.

What's listed under your SCSI/RAID controllers section? Kinda of unrelated to your read problem, but the "ghost" dvd drive intrigues me.

As far as your problem goes, it really could be anything. It could be as simple as that disc really is not readable by your player, some are just finicky. I have a cheaper "Lite-On" DVD drive that reads ANYTHING, even crap so scratched that more expensive and even TV top models refuse to read. You may just have to have someone burn another copy.

I may have a spare DVD player at home, I'll check later on if you like.

I've got a
SCSI/RAID Host Controller
WinXP Promise FastTrack 378 (tm) Controller
WinXP Promise Raid Console SCSI Processor Device

I have no idea how to fix this. I just wanted to say nice bumblebee transformers background ^.~

oh, did you mean divx? you typed it but for some reason when i read it, i read directx x.x

sorry.... hmm. even at that, divx 6.6 is out.

Sabs can't be on Direct X 6

FFXI requires 8+

the G drive could be a virtual drive that was setup for some other program you use. last time i setup a virtual drive, it listed it just like that (dvd drive)

Are you running, or have you ever installed a Virtual CDrom like Alcohol 120%? Because thats what that looks like. As long as the background program and driver are loaded it will keep reinstalling.

You could also use this as another way to solve your problem.

Rip the DVD/CD whatever it is your trying to play to your harddisk, (if you can ever get it to read again) set it up as an image file, and mount it onto the virtual drive.

As long as you have the harddisk space, problem solved.
