Lately my computer has been having an issue I've never experienced in previous computers. After having it on for an extended period of time, it starts completely locking up in random intervals, then it'll revert to normal operating for a few minutes, then lock up again. I was thinking it might have just been a virus or something, but I ran a full scan which turned up nothing... Any suggestions?

Sounds like an over heating issue causing some things to shut down. Someone else could go into more detail than I could.

could be overheating, but it could also be a memory leak in your currently running programs. I would keep an eye on your computer heat, and at you task manager to see if anything is using too much CPU or memory over time.
Programs like firefox should never be left open as firefox memory leaks alot and can be using over 350,000 memory over time its left open, i see it alot.

also check for spyware and viruses and these can also cause the same effects and can be tied in to memory leaks too.

I doubt it's overheating, because I have the side panel of my tower off to address that from a previous experience. It works!

Anyway... It's probably a memory leak, since I do leave firefox open almost constantly. I'll see how it works without it running. Thanks. ;o

Aye, I get this too, My computer freezes for 5 seconds randomly, It's getting really annoying, since I tend to die cause of it while playing games. :p

HDD Problem

wrong thread, sorry

Success!

Seems it was a memory leak caused by Firefox. I left my computer on, without firefox, for the entire time I went to sleep, and when I woke up, no problem! This is opposed to me leaving Firefox opened and problems would be present when I awoke... so thanks!

Problem found!

When I'm running windower, and I then load up Firefox, my framerate dies permanently until I restart windower... What the fuck is up with that? >:/ Again, suggestions?

No exact suggestions here.

My first guess is low virtual memory (windows usually lets you know if it's too low) When it's low you're PC will take breaks just like you described.

2nd guess is you have a Rootkit screwing with you. You should get a software called "Hijackthis" It scans you're registry, then you can research everything you're not familiar with then take it out. It's a pain in the ass, but you'll most likely find out what the hell is going on to say the least.

There is also a possiblity of graphic driver problem

I have my computer freeze up for 5~10second before it go back to normal. in a rare occasion, it never go back to normal and giving me a BSoD about nvidia driver around 15second later.

There is also possiblity you have too much processes software running.

Edit: this may help

im glad my suggestiion helped you out in solving your problem.
As for windower and firefox issue,
It would seem that they are fighting over memory space when running together causing confict.
Windower is running a game and will naturally be very heavy on the memory, opening firefox with windower open will let firefox become a memory leech that will grab memory from anywhere it can, especially something as memory heavy as windower.
You could try the firefox memory leak hack fix posted in the link above and see if that works out for you, personally i have that hack applied and the memory leak is the same as before.
Best example i can use over the memory fight between the two programs is a common occurance that can be found in two pieces of hardware.
All hardware, and programs use a memory range on your computer.
if you go to your system device manager in control panel and open up the properties on your video card and look at the resources tab you can see your memory ranges for that hardware listed.
On rare occasion you may have two pieces of hardware that run in the same or overlap in the memory range.
this can cause locking up as they are each fighting for that memory ownership and are leeching very hard off of each other, this can even cause instant crashes and such as ive found when i run my video capture card it fights with my video card.
this would be kinda how windower and firefox are interacting.
now i dont know if you can change the ranges of memory a program uses like you can with hardware, but its worth looking into, could solve some problems if the hack fix does not work for you!

Everything I tried failed... So I reformatted my computer and installed Vista(Which runs everything perfectly thus far). So... no more retardation. It was drastic, but I did it! D: Now I have to get back all the music I _didn't_ back up.

you know Skeith When I saw the thread title and then you as the OP I'd never thought it'd be you to have a comp problem...you fix mine all the time lol.

I had a lock up earlier today when i logged out of whitegate to a mule in windy froze up for about 5mins, had to shutdown and restart, i use firefox as well so that could easily be a problem
