Computer Shutting Down

Yours might not, but faster processors will.

But you're right, it's not always a simple fan replacement that's needed. Sometimes the heatsink has problems, or just started off as something the manufacturers pulled out of the rear end of a metal cow and couldn't cool a processor if it was submerged in liquid nitrogen.

My thoughts on this are same as everybody else's, filecheck FFXI. If it only crashes while zoning, then that's probably where your problem is. It could be the RAM, but that wouldnt' really make sense, because running by the Jeuno AH would be crashing the computer, not just zoning.
i would think AMD 3200+ was fast enough, overclocked too

Did this to me a while back when I updated to the most recent videocard drivers. When I rolled back the problem stopped, and I havent updated em since. =P

Especially got me when I got tele'd, or I'd lag a bit from GA spells like Firaga III, or when I was randomly running somewhere after playing about 20-30 minutes.

That would definitly nead a heatsink with a fan attached. You would be lucky if the processor didn't burn out in 3 minutes after the fan breaking during gameplay.

That's a good point Astyanax. Updated drivers don't get along with ffxi too well, especially nvidia cards. Did you update your drivers recently before the crashes started?

well i have it in mine also, Brand new. Built it all myself and souped it up pretty nicely.
I dont expect it to ever mess up, if it does i can repair anything myself. Got 4 fans runnin on it, and a spare cpu fan.
Im upgrading my motherboard, vid card and cpu in a year because i cant stand that my mobo only has two PCI slots. and a PCI express.
just waitin for income tax time again since thats what i built this one with XD.

And yeah driver support sucks when it comes to ffxi, it really sucks having to have outdated drivers just to play ffxi.
i know i have to use a real old version or else my avatars are all glitchy and theres a constant sun spot on the screen along with being able to target people through mountains and walls.

Nope, haven't updated drivers recently. Did a file check on Pol and FFXI and they both came back with no problems. So it only happens during FFXI, while zoning. I may pull it out of it's little resting spot and put it on my desk.. see if that helps.

EDIT: The internet cable is snaked through the floor, and only long enough to reach where it is currently residing... so moving it is gonna be tough, if not impossible...

And what he means by that is it goes aroud his bedroom, OUT his window, across the outside of the house 5 feet, DOWN a floor, into another window, across a room, and then into the router. Pretty damn funny all said.

Or did you finaly just drill a whole in the floor?

Try running with the side of your case off and a floor flan blowing air into it (make sure the air isn't real dusty). Try using some compressed air to clean the cpu and videocard fans in addition to making sure those are both working while gaming.

I had the same problem, and every once in a while, I would dismantle my computer, and take some very clean tissue paper and wipe some thing that I could pull apart. I'm trying to find the name of it, but if anyone knows what I'm talking about... lol, it's like, a little green stick in two white things you can pull apart.

After I wiped them clean, the computer worked fine.

Yea... we drilled the holes when I moved back for the year.

Anyways, moved the computer downstairs to test how it would act in a more open setting. Still shutdown. So, I'm about 5 seconds away from chucking this damn thing out a window. Any other suggestions? Not sure which part would cause this problem if its not a file issue. I would say something like video card, but then wouldn't it have shutdown during all the lag at Beseiged, or in Sky? The fact that it only does it while zoning is odd.

This sounds a lot like a stick of ram has gone bad. Use Microsofts RAM test utility and check each stick individually. My computer was doing the exact same thing, completely random and seemed like there was a pattern at first. Here is a link to the test program from Microsoft that I used. If your PC does not have a 3.5 inch drive you will need to use the image file to make a CD that will run the program at startup. Instructions are on Microsoft's site:

Those are your ram slots. If the connectors get dirty it could be a problem, but that is rarely a problem.

They could have been heating up too much if they were crusted with dirt. Doesn't most RAM have heat spreaders stuck on already?

I have only seen one pc in my life with dust built up to a level that could be called dirt. It was a lan machine that hadn't been cleaned, nor opened in 5 years. Ram doesn't usually collect much dust, nothing a shot of comrpessed air can't fix.

A few of the higher quality ram sticks come with heat spreaders, but they are really something of an uneeded gimic. Unless you are overclocking your ram, stock won't get that hot. It does sound like bad ram sticks, but heat is likely not the issue for ram anyway.

My computer is still rebooting when I zone too. I don't think it's heat or dirt, it's a fairly new system. It's got to be either the ToAU update or the new version of windower doing it.

This is getting to be a huge pain in the ass.

One of his connecters DID fail on him at one point, but he moved his ram to another slot.

Depending on the motherboard, some are finicky about which slots have ram and in what combinations. Best to check your users guide for the mb when installing ram. However, if you have been using it like that for a long time, then that wouldn't be the problem.

I switched the RAM around...oh... 6 months ago? So it;'s been in it's current setup for a while now. I noticed last night while doing sky, that I didn't d/c once in any of the old zones. And I realized that all my d/c's have been zoning to and from Whitegate/Al Zhabi.. or into Mog House in Al Zhabi.
