I've been playing FFXI on dial up on my PS2 since PS2 release and my connection was just fine. Now after returning from nearly a year of hiatus I am annoyed as fuck. I keep R0ing over and over again for no reason at all. It'll go to 88% sit there for a bit, then jump to 100% and bounce 88% to 100%, occasionally it will drop all the way to 0% and sit there for like a minute before slowly raising back to 100%, and then, rarely I d/c.

My ISP is Earthlink, and I've tried three different access numbers and I still get the same problem. I have no idea how to determine where the problem the is. Is my phone line going to shit? Is my PS2 modem dying? Is my ISP shit (shit in dial up terms since its already shit)?

I would test the connection on my PC but I keep getting a "port already in use" error everytime I try to use the modem on it =/

i'm having a problem with timing out for no reason. i don't have a problem connecting, but randomly, it will "time out" and disconnect me. i wonder if there is a correlation. i'm with comcast, and there is no problem with my internet.

I've been having the same issue over the summer when I play on dial up as well. I ended up re-installing my isp software a dozen times before I finally got it to work again. Their connection just seems to have gone to shit on dial up and I'm not sure why. Just for the record I use People PC.

sucks if this is a wide spread thing

Just a quick hunch, would opening up my PS2 and cleaning solve the problem? Its been sitting idle for a while and may be dusty on the inside.

That's weird. Usually when I disconnect, it just drops gradually from 100 and never goes back up.

Are you just using a modem, or do you have a router too? I used to have the exact same problem, but I just opened some ports on my router and it went away.

how does one open up ports on a router?

Its a straight connection, phone line to PS2

i'm kind of obligated to use a router, i figured you meant something to do with the configuration settings for the router.

Go here -> http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm, find the router you're using on the list and then find Final Fantasy XI on the next page. You should get a step-by-step guide.

Westyle: I don't know. Did you try plugging the line into a handset to see if it works? If it doesn't then there's something wrong with your line. Just call your ISP and they can test it for you.

I did a call on the phone and it sounded fine, though it seems to be a periodical problem so it might be hard to catch on the phone.

Yeah, if all else fails, I'd still call my ISP. A friend had a similar problem with disconnects, and her phone worked fine but she occasionally heard static on her handset. She just had the lined replaced. Good luck!

They must've did something to their servers while I was gone because they worked just fine before

A little update, I changed ISPs and its still doing it =/

Is anyone having problems logging in? For the last two days my PC will timeout (FFXI-3001) as I'm logging in, as in after I choose a character at the "downloading data" screen. I can log in fine on my xbox, but its annoying not to be able to play on my PC.

Ya, I've tried different dial up ISPs and it did it as well. I dunno what the issue is. For all we know it could just be they're cutting bandwith to us because they notice the traffic is from a game. Comcast is known to do this, and it's possible some dial up ISPs are as well.

Honestly I couldn't tell you West, but I have the same issue.

Tried another line and it worked fine. Seems to be the phone line causing the problem.

I got the same thing with my ps2 turned out it was the router... never fixed it.. just deal with it when it happens. lol
