Seriously there is such a connection out there, and is fact, you CAN have 40GB, YES 40GB a second!

75-year-old Swedish woman has a 40 gigabits-per-second fiber-optic connection
She can download a full-length movie on her home PC in less than 2 seconds
The woman's son installed the connection, he's a a networking expert
The speed was reached using a modulation technique

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) -- She is a latecomer to the information superhighway, but 75-year-old Sigbritt Lothberg is now cruising the Internet with a dizzying speed.
Lothberg's 40 gigabits-per-second fiber-optic connection in Karlstad is believed to be the fastest residential uplink in the world, Karlstad city officials said.
In less than 2 seconds, Lothberg can download a full-length movie on her home computer -- many thousand times faster than most residential connections, said Hafsteinn Jonsson, head of the Karlstad city network unit.
Jonsson and Lothberg's son, Peter, worked together to install the connection.
The speed is reached using a new modulation technique that allows the sending of data between two routers placed up to 1,240 miles apart, without any transponders in between, Jonsson said.
"We wanted to show that that there are no limitations to Internet speed," he said.
Peter Lothberg, who is a networking expert, said he wanted to demonstrate the new technology while providing a computer link for his mother.
"She's a brand new Internet user," Lothberg said by phone from California, where he lives. "She didn't even have a computer before."
His mother isn't exactly making the most of her high-speed connection. She only uses it to read Web-based newspapers.

I've always said Sweden have fast connection speed =/ Anywhere you live in Sweden, you can easily get 100 mbit/s connection for roughly $32 per month. I believe Sweden is in the lead when it comes to internet connection technology, and also have the best service and cheapest prices.

That article just proves it :p

Gotta love the nords, they keep quiet, but they spank all our asses at everything.

Especially at spanking asses, they make some good porn stars in Sweden.

More on topic, I'd like to know what that'd cost to have installed and have service with. I'd do it, though I don't know why I'd ever need it.

Signalling... the horrors that brings back.

In NA the standard signalling code used is 2B1Q, which I believe is an inverse-polarity modulation that relies on this for CRC - 1 bit pos, 1 bit neg, transmission ok so keep on sending.

I'm guessing these guys are using a codec without polarity checking. Doesn't say anywhere that they're doing this with common household routers or equipment so it could very well be a hand-made PCB on each end of the wire.

I'm very curious how the CO was involved. No telco in their right mind would permit 40GB/s to more than 1 endpoint at a time, but 1240 miles... they must be using existing wire.

Also note this is 40Gb per sec, not 40GB. Gigabit != GigaByte. OC-768 is a pre-existing technology that runs at 40Gb/sec but it just hasn't really been put in use in a real world scenario yet... as far as I know.

40 gigabits is 5 gigabytes. Still good though. =P
Though...I'm unsure why this is actually news - there's internet services in Japan that have up to 1Tb/s connections, and the world record is held at 14Tb/s...

hey guys watch as i get phenomenal speeds because i jack directly to the ISP instead of being routed 20 times.

Nothing too special about that, really.
