I continually have the same issues with my craptop and thought I would see if I can get any more insight on it. Basically it just doesn't want to present any image on the screen 99% of the time when I boot it up. Once I get the startup screen, I'm good to go, but whenever I power up, it doesn't ever powerup the screen with anything.

When I went to Geeksquad they didn't look at a thing and just told me its a motherboard issue and the craptop is fried. I personally didn't buy that and openned it up since it does work occassionally and made sure nothing was loose by reseating everything, but I still have the same issue.

I use good antivirus software as well as antispyware to make sure that is not an issue. I know it's not due to overheating (it is the HP labtop with dual-centrino processors which can cook like an oven) as I keep it circulated best I can.

I thought it might have something to do with the graphics card and maybe the BIOS or the Device Manager isn't recognizing the graphics card? I do have some other minor issues with the craptop like my shift keys don't work and the internal network card doesn't work, but I can make due without those. I might of posted this before, and if I have I do apologize for the repetition of it, but I just don't have the money right now to get a new labtop or PC due to litigations and family issues... FFXI is my only escape from RL atm lol.

No POST (power-on self-test)?

Check Power -> memory -> processor -> mobo

When I went to Geeksquad
Your first mistake.

sounds like what they would say.

if the computer is still under a warranty, good job! you just voided it. :p

that's a best practice: also, don't leave it on (plugged-in or not) for prolonged periods of time. Power management is an illusion when it comes to heat, and heat will destroy components. Hibernate when you aren't using the laptop.

It does sound like a BIOS problem, but there are other steps you can try.

- If you have any bootable external media (Linux CDs or a Windows 98 CD comes directly to mind), try to boot using those.
- Look at the HP website to see if you can find a BIOS update for your particular model. You can normally flash them onto a USB drive or a CD and boot the system with it to upgrade your BIOS.
- Otherwise, you may need to get HP support involved.

Likewise, wouldn't this fit better in General Discussion instead of FFXI Gen Discussion?

Ya know, I use the FFXI section of this forum so much, I didn't realize there was a regualr General Discussion.... wow. It's over a year past warranty so I didn't do any reseating until I verified that. I don't have a boot disk for Windows 98 or Linux atm, but I will surf their site for a possible BIOS update and possibly call HP later today if I can't find one. Thanks for the help!

And any Mod that reads this can move it to the Regualr Gneral Discussion for correctness please :D

That actually does sound like it might be a motherboard issue, ironically... lol

I am resisting the urge to abuse my powers to change the title of this topic to "Laptop." I will however move it to Reality Sinks In.

This does seem to be 1 of 2 problems: Motherboard on the fritz or loose connector to the LCD.

Due to not having my craptop to burn a CD of a boot for me to try and update BIOS, I'm going to see maybe if it is a loose LCD connection... only reason I might not think so is when I do get the screen working, it never just drops the connection unless it reboots. But hey...anything is worth a shot. I might just have to take a very extended break from FFXI until I actually get a new laptop or PC (no way am I getting this for PS2 and I don't have the money for a 360 atm either ;^^; )
