AUGUSTA, Ga. --- It's becoming a battle of religion versus profession, and Augusta State University is caught in the middle.

A graduate student is suing ASU, claiming the school is making her change her Christian beliefs in order to graduate.

Jennifer Keeton is getting her masters in counselor education. She says the school is making her change her christian beliefs to graduate.

Jennifer Keeton has completed one year of her Masters degree in counselor education. At the end of the first year, she was presented with a remediation plan, or courses to improve in certain areas.

That plan includes classes to improve writing and grammar skills, as well as workshops to make her more sensitive to the gay population -- something her instructors say is necessary for her to be an effective counselor.

"The school counseling faculty has decided that my views are not acceptable for me or to share with other students," she says in a video statement produced by the Alliance Defense Fund. "They have required a remediation plan in which the end result would be me altering my beliefs or being dismissed from the program."

In a letter to Keeton, program directors say that is not the case.

In the letter, associate director Mary Jane Anderson-Wiley points to what she calls Keeton's "belief that you possess a special knowledge about the way that other people should live their lives, and that others need to adopt a similar set of values."

The letter goes on to say that "the content of [Keeton's] moral or religious beliefs is not in question."

According to the remediation plan, program directors are concerned about Keeton's ability to effectively council people who are gay or lesbian, citing class papers and comments where Keeton has disagreed with the gay "lifestyle."

The letter also cites an email from Keeton in which she says: "my Christian moral views are not just about me. I think the Bible's teaching is true for all people and it shows the right way to live."

News 12 spoke with other counselors who say the those courses are part of any counselor training.

"Our goal is not to change people that we believe are behaving badly," says Dr. Sheree Gates. "Our goal is to help people with the goals they bring in to counseling."

Dr. Gates has counseled kids for more than 20 years, working in elementary, middle and high schools. She is also a member of the American Counselors Association.

"One of the most important things is that the counselor not be perceived as judgmental," she says.

"I have to be aware ahead of time what my biases are, and make sure they don't come across in my face, my expressions and my wording."

She uses the ACA code of conduct as her guide. It is the same guide required for ASU counseling students.

"Who's to say that my feelings are more valid than anyone else's feelings, or my opinions are more valid than someone else's," Dr. Gates says, adding that she agrees those beliefs should be kept private.

The letter to Keeton cites the first principal of the ACA Code of Ethics: the primary responsibility of counselors is to respect the dignity and to promote the welfare of clients."

A representative from Augusta State University says the school has not officially been served with any court papers.

The school issued the following statement:

"We cannot comment specifically on any pending litigation; however, the university does not discriminate on the basis of students' moral, religious, political or personal views or beliefs.

"The counselor education program is grounded in the core principles of the American Counseling Association and the American School Counselor Association, which defines the roles and responsibilities of professional counselors in its Code of Ethics. The Code is included in the curriculum of the counseling education program, which states that counselors in training have the same responsibility as professional counselors to understand and follow the ACA Code of Ethics."
Keeton is suing for nominal and actual damage costs, along with attorney fees.

Oh that poor dear! How dare the school try to produce future counsellors who can provide objective support that is in the best interest of the PATIENT? Those monsters, trying to push relevant empriical data regarding sexuality and so called "conversion therapies" on to their students. Ethics, protocol and research are tools of the devil!

GTFO bitch, are you serious? I see you also had to take remedial reading and writing - yeah, might help if you can actually read that Bible of yours before you cherry pick gems of wisdom to add to your little bag of redneck cuntery.

What next? Going to sue the Geology department for teaching you that the Earth is more than 5000 years old?

Lol, wow. That's horrible. I hope her case gets thrown out and she never completes the course.

Re: Christian trick sues School over... First Amendment violation?

When I started reading I thought this was going to be about a science teacher making a girl believe god had nothing to do with anything... then as I read I starting realizing this is about someone who wants to push her moral system on others and wanted to smack the bitch.

Re: Christian trick sues School over... First Amendment violation?

Amen.

To slapping the bitch that is.

Re: Christian trick sues School over... First Amendment violation?

Given that her particular stance on homosexuality would make her an unfit counselor for a very significant fraction of the population, I can safely say that the bitch can piss up a rope if she thinks that this lawsuit will do anything other than reinforce the (largely erroneous) idea that people of a religious bent are intolerant pricks.

Re: Christian trick sues School over... First Amendment violation?

It wouldn't surprise me if those Westboro Baptist Church loonies approached her eventually, or that she's already one of them.

Re: Christian trick sues School over... First Amendment violation?

I think I lost a few IQ points just reading that article.

Re: Christian trick sues School over... First Amendment violation?

This reminds me of similar situation where I live...However, it's the other way around... the teacher is gay and her employer is Catholic.

If the school weren't publicly funded (and I question the wisdom of publicly funding Catholic schools), then they'd be fully within their rights.

As it is, they're setting themselves up for a nice lawsuit.

Re: Christian trick sues School over... First Amendment violation?

Am I reading this correctly? The student is getting indignant because the school took action to make sure she was actually capable of fulfilling her duties rather than passing her when she was clearly incapable of offering impartial counsel as a councilor?

Re: Christian trick sues School over... First Amendment violation?

She might have at least tried faking it until graduation, at which point she'd be free to set up a practice and rail against any LGBT clients who darken her door. I don't think she'll be able to make a First Amendment claim stick; they don't seem to care what she believes as long as she learns how to act like a professional and keep it to herself when necessary, even if she doesn't when she's out in the world. Learning when to keep your mouth shut is something most people learn just dealing with customers.

It kinda reminds me of pharmacists who want the right to refuse to dispense birth control and emergency contraception. If you don't want to pass out medicine to people who need it, why the hell did you pick that job?

Student Sues for being required to take GLBT sensitivity training.

Ok so, this girl wants to work as a counselor, but because of her "heavy" christian and anti-homosexual beliefs, the school requires her to take sensitivity training. As stated in the article, it is required for anyone studying to be a counselor to follow the ACA (American Counseling Association) code of ethics which states that counselors must empathize with homosexuals.

What do some of you think? Think the lawsuit will fly? I'm all for following my religious beliefs and such, but if they get in the way of my desired profession, maybe I should consider a career change.

Re: Student Sues for being required to take GLBT sensitivity training.

Doh /facepalm damn search function XD

Re: Christian trick sues School over... First Amendment violation?

idk. maybe she wants to become a christian councilor. that way she can teach more people to remain ignorant and continue to let themselves be controlled by superstitions.

Re: Christian trick sues School over... First Amendment violation?

Certainly you can acknowledge the difference between birth control and, say, antibiotics?

To use another analogy: What if a gun shop owner was required to sell guns and ammunition not only to hunters, but also to suicidal people? Would he be wrong for having a moral objection?

A truly 'free' society would allow both the right to have birth control and facilitated suicide. But would it be a just society?

While I'm sure it seems like an extreme example, it illustrates the strength with which personal beliefs affect certain issues.

On topic: I agree, the crazy bitch should've just given it some lip-service and catered those of her faith when it came to counseling. I'm sure everyone else who happened her way wouldn't bother staying for more than one session.

Spoiler:
I don't mean to come across as if I'm attacking many of the more left-leaning opinions. When I speak out against what I perceive as something approaching hypocrisy, it's because I think that the person has the ability to examine his/her statements and potentially come to a more expansive view. I can't really say that about many of the right-leaning views; if the door is already shut and locked, it's unlikely that anything'll be getting through.

The better man can say, "I respect your right to hold your views, even if you don't respect my right to mine."

Re: Christian trick sues School over... First Amendment violation?

I do, but there are some religious groups who wouldn't. I don't think I'd want a hardcore Christian Scientist offering me prayer when I'd much rather have penicillin. But why stop with birth control? Should a Scientologist pharmacist be allowed to refuse dispensation of doctor-prescribed antidepressants? Should doctors be allowed to refuse to operate on a gay patient? If your beliefs are interfering with the life-saving duties with which you're entrusted, maybe you should consider a new job.

In a totally free society, they could get away with that. However, we don't live in a totally free society. She's free to argue she shouldn't have to treat gay people, but they're free to deny her a diploma if she can't meet one of the basic requirements of the program. It wasn't long ago the Institute for Creation Research hoped Texas would let them crank out teaching degrees, but they were denied because the idea of young-earth creationists teaching geology or biology is incomprehensible.

The moral problem doesn't arise from her personal beliefs, it comes from the fact that she is to become a counselor. Counselors are supposed to be completely void of judgement. Neutrality strengthens the trust between client and therapist, and from an ethical standpoint is the best approach to avoid further psychological conflicts evolving from feelings of guilt or inadequacy.

Your analogy is poor. If an Arms-dealer were in a position of ethical responsibility and thought seriously about what every one of his customers might do with a gun, he wouldn't sell a single one. The ultimate solution would be not to sell guns to civilians but RAH RAH RAH Second Amendment AMERICA FUCK YEAH. The truth is these people have little to no accountability over any collateral caused by their businesses aside from, or in spite of what legislation may say. Think about it - how often is a gun-dealer arrested after a shooting?

Doctors, and in fact anyone working in Health, are bound to decisions which affect the well-being of their patients. That's why they don't sell hard drugs to people who want to use them recreationally and can prove that they are mentally stable

This bitch shouldn't pay lip service either. She should sit her little Christian arse down in those workshops and take it dead seriously. If she cannot see how being insensitive to some of her clients may detriment her work or worse, the client's condition, then she should GTFO and become a Chaplain or something.

As an exmple: What if she counsels a kid who is confused about his sexuality? What if she quotes Leviticus and tells the kid that being gay is an abomination? What if the kid then, because he has no support system at home, decides that the best option is to kill himself? Is that right?

Fortunately, the APA/ACA don't support any of her bullshit. Homosexuality hasn't been a mental illness for 50 years or so, and gay conversion therapies have been declared dangerous. Bottom-line is, she's entitled to her personal beliefs, but they have no place in her line of work.
