Lets suppose someone lost their mother recently to cancer, and someone else on the board discovers this; if they then send a few random rate downs with the commentary "Ha ha your mum's dead" is that considered ok? Would you be able to brush off such a comment if it had just happened to a loved one you know?
I really think the internet has desensified alot of us to what is considered social behaviour.
But this is part of the issue. No, that's not ok. It's mean-spirited, it's harrassment and it sucks. But you cannot paint everyone with that brush. Not everyone is a sadistic asshole out to cut someone down or say the most hurtful things simply because they can. In fact, what everyone needs to realize is that these people that are taking things to the extreme are not the majority.
I agree that people are somewhat desensitized... Somehow for some people the mantra becomes "lol internet" like posting on the web gives you a license to be a dickhead. But not everyone thinks that way. And accordingly, not everyone should have to suffer because the tiny minority chooses to revel in anti-social behavior. Unfortunately in life, people will be hurtful because they can. So you identify those people and you avoid them. This is what the ignore function is for. And if people refuse to use the tools at their disposal to avoid those folks, they have only themselves to blame for their hurt feelings.
