Ok. I have my computer monitor. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001341

Now, it has 2 hdmi, DVI, component, optical outputs. I have my PC hooked up to it, along with my PS3 and Xbox 360. I'm trying to get all sound through my PC speakers. Currently, I can have sound through my PC into the monitor, or I have to unhook my speakers, hook them from my PC to my monitor to get sound to my 360 and PS3. How can I get sound to all 3 systems? Currently, I have both consoles hooked through the HDMI ports, and my pc through the DVI.

I figured, by hooking the speakers into my Monitor, and hooking the optical cable from my PC to Monitor would work, but it doesn't. Any ideas?

I think I might know, based on stuff I've tried and found out about in the past.

The optical connection is designed to go from your computer to a computer speaker system, not to go to directly to another device with an optical input. I'd tried hooking up my computer to my receiver and it wouldn't work, and it turns out that was the cause. Basically, through most of the audio connections, the system will send the raw signal and the destination(receiver, or monitor in your case) will decode the signal and give you sound. But what your computer sound card does is it decodes the sound, then transmits the decoded signal straight to the speakers. It doesn't work because your monitor isn't receiving the right kind of signal, even though the hard part's done already. It's actually better that way, since the sound processor in your monitor isn't going to be great.

So, just hook up your computer using a 3.5mm-3.5mm cable; you're not doing any justice to your sound using an optical cable anyways, so you might as well just use the 3.5mm cable.

I have the logitech x-530 speakers.

I find out how to get sound from my computer to my monitor. My monitor has a hdmi/audio input. I can put a cord from it, directly into my sound card. Now I'm just trying to figure out how to hook my speakers up to my monitor which would give me sound to everything.

I get this sound card on the way with my new computer.

It has the red/white inputs that I could use the 3.5mm cables with hook directly into my sound card and monitor. I don't think my current computer has the red/white...

Man I wish that optical input/output would work. That way I could hook up my speakers to my sound card like usual, then put the optical from my monitor to my sound card, that way all sound would be routed through my speakers that way. You would think that would work lol.

I actually have that sound card, but without the front panel attatchment with the RCA inputs. Don't know about getting sound from the monitor, usually they don't have any audio out.

Mine does, i guess because it's a HDTV/Monitor combo.

"Depending on your drivers and software"
have you looked into special software that will allow more configuration. its definately not just plug and play.
the easiest way, probably not the cheapest way, is to have some sort of hub(in a sense). such as a reciever.
without all kinds of crazy configuration/software, your best bet is to setup the speakers to the tv. unfortunately, the pc is going to suffer with a 3.5 connection though.

Ive done everything this guy has said.

Ive tried putting the optical from ps3 straight into my sound card. Nothing. I can get 2.1 right now because of the hdmi audio out on my monitor, but i have 5.1 speakers. The optical would allow for 5.1 but for some reason it's not working. He says you have to route the sound to that, but I'm not sure how to do that on a PC.
I've tried doing that, since I have a 5.1 system hooked up to my computer; but I couldn't get it to work and I didn't try looking in to why it didn't work.

For routing the sound, it might be something as simple as selecting which playback device you want to use in the volume menu.

Well I know why hooking the optical cord didnt work...something so simple. Funny I can put a PC together in a hour, but I can't figure out the sound part with speakers lol. Anyway. both optical's were outputs, not inputs. DUH. I forget that inputs are really on receivers. Oh well, that sound card i'll be getting has an input. If that doesn't work, I have a panasonic home theater sound system I can hook that will blow away these logitech speakers, I was just trying to avoid using them.

That makes sense, TV's only have an optical out instead of in. You should be able to get it to work once your new sound card comes in(it works great btw). Honestly though, your panasonic home theater probably isn't that much better than the logitech's; and it'd be overkill for sitting at a computer so even if it was you wouldn't be able to really that off.

Yeah that is why I wanted to avoid it. I'm also thinking about getting new Logitech speakers anyway. I saw a nice set that had optical input on it. Then I could just connect that directly to the Monitor and get 5.1 through my 360/PS3/PC. It also has inputs where you can hook gaming systems directly to it as well.
