Crafters Corner Flame Thread - Version 2.0

Anyone else think this turned into a crafter e-peen thread about how much gil they lost?

While failing synths can get upsetting at times, its probably the most calm part of the game.

You have alot bigger things to worry about. (Usually involving sharp teeth and claws or something involving absurd amounts of EXP grinding.)

I blew up 4 subligars.

Yeah I'm not wearing Yukata with RDM pants around you anymore. It just got more awkward each time. =/

I'd say I'm sorry that crafting is a loss for you, but I'm actually surprised how long it's taken for the Food market to wind up on the page the other crafts have been on for months. That is, (NQ = Loss, HQ = Profit.)

Chances are people saw that even NQs were a profit and started PLing their cooking to rake in gil, which ironically is the same thing that caused the other crafts to take a dive as well. It's a sad fact: the second you notice something is a good profit and you try to do it, chances are at least a dozen others noticed the same thing. And by the time you're able to make that profit, it's generally not worth the profit anymore due to undercutting, etc.

Also on a side note if you didn't realize it cooking was hammered and ruined by RMT. If you ever look at some of the I guess popular food items that sell faster than usual you can clearly see RMT uncutting to minimal profit and just trying to get their items to sell before yours. I thought it use to pretty easy to level cooking without any loss if you took time to buy from NPCs and such. Now of days cooking seems to be a loss no matter what path you take and in the sense of looking for a profit its difficult when you have RMT cutting prices, and producing stacks and stacks of HQs by synthing all day. Not one to say which craft to pick and choose by I don't recommend cooking to one unless you enjoy crafting. Seeing it seems to be one of the biggest RMT crafts is my reason to not proceed with it.

Yeah, 10k loss per synth is a joke. I leveled from 88-92 on Giant Bird Fletchings a while back, pre-ToAU, it was 80k/synth lost at the least. Cry moar.
that was then this is now time have change, people use blow 100k like it was 1gil now people are lucky if they have 100k. claws are what 490k you craft a sh +1 you double that. You craft +1 sushi and you might break even if the stuff sells becuase people not going pay there entire gil bank for couple stacks of food.

This is true, and is also happening to farming items as well the more items they make rare ex the smaller item camp pull get so people/rmt go camp something else. Also with the decline in gil people also will not buy wants as much as they use to unless it been drastic cut in price and seller continue to lower price of item there selling because there are so many on the AH and they need money. Also considering there has not been many new worth wild crafts syth of crafting mats in last 3 year the demand is kinda dry.

I'm under the impression that 99% of the people here think crafting is not worth it. Is this true?

Well, I'm a pretty good farmer, so no, I don't think it's true. I could sell what I farm for a profit, or I could synth it into something else for a little more money.

To be honest, I didn't level my crafts to become super ultra rich. I did it more to save money. A penny saved is a penny earned. That money I no longer have to pay for shihei, bullets, cheap food, fishing lures, etc can be used for other desirables. And on the offchance I actually HQ something good or get lucky on some desynths, it just makes my day even better.

Most items made have a low margin of profit... including sushi. The few that have a high profit margin sell few and far between (or never) because, unlike other crafts, you can't sell food after you use it; so why waist a lot of gil on that +1 if it even last a few hours.

Sushi is typically break-even NQ (profit if you fish it up yourself of course, but then that part of that profit is *from* the fishing), profit HQ.

Some cooking HQs sell because they're worth it, most don't because they're not. Don't go for the HQs that don't sell - go for the HQs that do sell, and go for the things that are still moderately profitable even for NQ.

And above all, the idea with cooking is that you want to move a lot of *quantity*, rather than have a particularly big profit per synth - equipment crafting is typically the opposite. Consequently, diversify what you're synthing (don't synth *just* sushi or whatever, synth like ten different foods or so, so you're not flooding any one market) and ideally have one or more Jeuno mules so you can sell a lot of it simultaneously.

Beyond that most general of advice, it is of course up to you to do your own market research (cost to synth, chance of HQ, sale rate of NQ, sale rate of HQ, profit/loss per synth for NQ, profit (presumably) per synth for HQ) and figure out for yourself what you want to make. Figuring out what sells fast shouldn't be too hard, think about the jobs and what people eat *period*.

I am admittedly a crafting noob however, I think that if you go into crafting with this kind of attitude (and because it's fun and zomg addictive) it really makes crafting worthwhile and somewhat profitable and keeps it fun. :)

remember that next time you want sushi or anything with dragon meat.

This made me giggle. >.>

Ok I asked the question wrong.

Strictly crafting without farming materials, do you think crafting is worth it?

Cooking isnt a real craft anyways should of stop at 60 if that.

You are right, my liege.

I just think people don't try hard enough to find things to sell.

Hmm...where are you guys getting your definition that would preclude cooking from being a craft? Let's see:

Dictionary.com
noun, plural crafts
1. an art, trade, or occupation requiring special skill, esp. manual skill: the craft of a mason.

verb (used with object)
9. to make or manufacture (an object, objects, product, etc.) with skill and careful attention to detail.

American Heritage Dictionary:
n.
Skill in doing or making something, as in the arts; proficiency. See Synonyms at art1.

tr.v. craft·ed, craft·ing, crafts
To make by hand.

Wordnet:noun
1. the skilled practice of a practical occupation; "he learned his trade as an apprentice" [syn: trade]
3. people who perform a particular kind of skilled work; "he represented the craft of brewers"; "as they say in the trade"
4. skill in an occupation or trade

verb
1. make by hand and with much skill; "The artisan crafted a complicated tool"

Cooking seems to follow the definitions above. If you have another source that explains why you would discount cooking as a craft please cite it. :)

Ok I asked the question wrong.

Strictly crafting without farming materials, do you think crafting is worth it?

Strictly speaking of buying materials, yes, I do think it's worth it. I could make hundreds of thousand of gil every day just making bullets, bolts, and ninja tools if I weren't so lazy and didn't mind hanging out with that freaky circus everyday to make stacks of stacks.

And that's just with lolalchemy 98 and all subs 50+.

I think the problem is too many people shoot for those super big number HQ synths that just don't happen all the time. If you only aim for tier-0, you're only going to profit every now and then. If you aim for tier-1/2/3, you will profit more often. It's common sense. And ffxiah.com is your friend. Look for the green text. Is it green? Click it. Does it sell more than once every three years? Was the last one sold during the inflation days? Oh, they sell almost weekly for a solid profit margin? There you go. It's not rocket science. You can profit from any craft at just about any level if you're not completely ignorant.

And as I mentioned, being "worth it" isn't just about sales. If you decided to take up corsair tomorrow and were able to save yourself 40% off the price of 12x99 iron bullets by synthing them yourself, you could consider that a profit in my opinion. That's another case where it's "worth it" to have a craft leveled.
