The correct way to PL a craft without making yourself destitute is to go for the synths that are the least expensive, with ingredients easily attainable at your level.
I do not recommend camping the AH for materials and paying any price the farmers put up. Nor do I recommend selling all of your synths at and undercut price, that only hurts everyone... including yourself, in the long run. PL'ing your craft also means you really don't spend much time in the game doing anything but focusing on that craft. Weather it be constant mining and skilling up for gold/smith or what not, that's when you know someone is PL'ing a craft. Also, knowing what day (in game, of course) you're synth is strong to/weak to and the moon phases will assist you in skilling up, and producing high quality and consistant synths.
In my opinion, "Powerleveling" a craft is different than "Gilburning" a craft. Unless you have earned infinite wealth (like only a few people we know do) then my suggestion is to take it slow, and stick with synths that... again... have materials that are easily obtained at your current XP level. Boneworking and Leathercraft are good choices, so is Cooking.
Oh, and Gilburning a craft sucks, because you really don't learn the best way to utilize your experience, and... everyone can tell you did it. You usually leave a wake of economic destruction behind you and you're not going to make many friends. Gilburners... don't ask for help. :nono:
I'm going to say this very clearly... there is no point in getting to the top of a craft before you are ready. You're only going to make things harder for yourself, and you certainly won't get any respect by stepping on so many toes by Gilburning.
Some people may disagree, and it's their right to. But as for an educated and informative reply... there you have it.
If you have a passion for your craft and are smart about it, there really isn't anything that will stop you from getting high level without cheating as long as you are within your means.
