I was checking out some great videos on youtube last night on the FF14 beta. One of the videos showed the player crafting as a weaver and in another, he was logging and chopping down grass.

The crafting system looks sick! I think I may switch my main job over to one of the DoH :) It looks like a really nice interactive system and I would really like to try it out. What do you guys think of it?

The crafting system do actually look really good, I cant decide which id rather start with, fighting or crafting =/.

Same...

I think I am going to roll a Dunesfolk :x I am going to main DoL/DoH for awhile starting off I think :)

Unlike FFXI I really want to try all the jobs, maybe lancer can wait a bit ^^ but they all seem to appeal to me.

I'm doing both - lvling Conjurer (or whatever other class they reveal that would fit better as a healer job), as well as a suplementing crafting job (Weaver, carpenter), so that I can repair and make my own gear.

I would highly suggest that you have some job aside from a Hand class if you plan on making it your main, even if it's a gathering class.
The only way you can make money if you start out as a crafting class is if you do crafting guild leves, or finish some of the opening quests which give some gil as a reward. Unless something is changed, you won't even be able to kill the lowest of low level enemies.

You earn some money, but at the moment they refresh every two days, so it's not like you can just grind on them all the way to the level cap. Of course, you could also group with someone who still has guildleves to do, but I've only done that once. All members get the full reward listed in the guildleve's rewards, apparently.
Still, the most consistent way of earning money would be to gather or sell monster drops on your bazaar or the AH (when they actually add it). I know I was bazaaring ice crystals that I mined up for 2k a piece, because apparently they were used in a really good craft. Didn't really look into exactly what craft it was, though.

so what you're saying is that its exactly like FF11, k

I'm going to be a fisherman again.

In XI, I was 100 cooking and 60 fishing before I quit. Another solid 10 levels and I could have just sold Sole Sushi on the AH and I would have been rich. Fish up my own fish and just NPC for the rest of the ingredients except for the rice which was no biggie.

I wouldn't say it's just like XI, if only because you can level yourself up by crafting.
Like, say you leveled up to 20 or so purely on crafting, and dumped all your stat points into physical stats. If you leveled a DoW job after that, it'd be much easier than starting fresh as a DoW.

There's also currently no limit on craft jobs, meaning (as of now, at least, it could change) you can bring them all to max level.

Can points be redistributed if you change your mind on what you want to do? I'm guessing the discipline I choose at the beginning only sets stats and gives a certain weapon? Or does it reaaaally matter what you choose at the start? :/

Supposedly you can respec your stats & whatnot allocated through your physical level, though I've not played enough to bother doing so.

Right now~ you can redistribute almost freely, but there's some sort of limit on how many times you can click the redistribute button. When I did, it gave me like a level and a half worth of points back to distribute. Not sure how to increase the amount of times you can click it, but you can eventually.
As for the full game, I remember them saying they wanted to implement some kind of cost to redistribute points, but that it wouldn't be too severe.

Disciplines are switched immediately upon changing the main hand item. Can't be in battle, or in a group currently engaged in battle, but other than that it's very quick.

I started as a Gladiator and made it to around R7 before I swapped over to Mining. Since I started mining I haven't really stopped to do much else besides tinker around when I have the mats to craft. It's fun stuff, wrist flick is pretty fun to mess around with too.
