Criminally Responsible

Attempted Suicide should be a crime punishable by death.

Anyone no matter their mental capacity or physical condition should have the right to die. If you think that is immoral then so be it but it is still their right. I am an advocate of assisted suicide and think that it is bullshit that only 3 states allow it and in all of those the patient (for lack of a better term) must spend almost a month requesting it multiple times.

This.

Also, if it's so immoral to allow someone the right to die if they so choose (enters the question are they of sound mind to make such decisions), imo, if they have set in their head at anytime they'd rather die than live they're not in their right mind to remain on this earth period.

Logic plays an important role when deciding sentences.. I think this one is open and shut. I was appalled to learn it took as long as it did in the courts to sentence this man. Guilty, reason.. idc, guilty.. "please kill me" okay, one less psycho leaching off humanity.

From what I understand not all cases of schizophrenia are to the point where the individual lacks all mental capacity, I have met a couple and when I was younger even dated one for a short time. The young man I dated would get his 'stories' mixed up, he would see things on the news or read about things and when in an episode feel that those situations directly involved him. The rest of the time he seemed pretty capable of straight thinking.

I'm not going to pretend I know what degree of mental capacity that man has, but least to most deranged, regardless, his act is a direct result of his being on Earth.

Look, don't drag the debate of the state's 'right to kill' into the arena of this guy's 'right to die'. We're talking about a lot of very different questions. Should a man or woman, possessing all their faculties, who has a painful and hopeless terminal disease be allowed to off themself? Should their doctor be allowed to do it for them? Maybe. Does that mean we should execute schizoid patients who utter the words, 'kill me?" Absolutely not. It's not the same thing at all.

You're absolutely right.

BUT.. he's not just a schizoid patient, you know, someone who was diagnosed at and earlier age, started on medication and monitored thus far. No.. he's a (as far as we know) undiagnosed schizophrenic who jumped countries, refuses medication (THARS YER RED FLAG) who cold bloodily murdered a young man unprovoked. He managed to buy a bus ticket, he managed to buy his choice brand of smokes which he shared in conversation with other passengers the day of, he managed to bring along with him a hunting knife.

Keeping in mind the witness accounts of that day, NOT ONE person said this man seemed off in anyway, (paraphrasing), they said he seemed like a regular normal guy.

What now.. he's soo off his rocker psychotic that he could never realize what he did was wrong, OR he's not completely off his rocker, we can rehabilitate this mofo and release him back onto our streets assuming he takes his meds.

btw.. if I seem emotional, I probably am. Though I don't let my emotion cloud all logic, and I'm not one for Red Tape.. I'm an idealist.

Yes, you missed the point i was trying to make, anyone who wants to die should be helped. Doctors can refuse if they dont want to help but im sure there would be someone out there like myself that would be more than happy to. Ontop of that if someone really does want to die they can be killed in a manner that preserves their organs and gives people who wish to continue living a better chance.

First off crazy doesn't mean stupid. His level of function doesn't indicate he was possessing all faculties. Secondly it's entirely possible he got on the bus as a perfectly rational person, and while on the bus, something(or nothing at all) triggered him.

Another point is that if he's undiagnosed, he's unmedicated. The question is, why is he undiagnosed. If China has an inadequite structure, than Chinese nationals should be screened for mental illness before allowed entry. If he came illegally, Canada needs to find out the channel that he took to get there and close it. If there's a boat he came on, whose boat was it? If it was a plane, who flew it? Once you have a severe, dangerous schizoid walking around the streets of Canada with no treatment, the failure has already taken place. Killing him isn't going to undo the damage that's been done.

Anyone who says "I want to die" should be shot immediately regardless of the circumstances?

Let's get one thing straight.

I am not a supporter of assisted suicide.

I am not saying that someone should have helped this guy kill himself.

He made a blatant request that the arresting officers end his life for him, and they should have done exactly that.

Let's place this in perspective. I take the stance against the woman in Iran who wants to blind the man who blinded her, yet I want the mentally unstable man who killed another man to have his own death wish granted. Hypocritical? From your perspective, possibly. But not from mine.

The man in Iran would have to live the rest of his life being blinded. I would hope that the woman would hound him for the rest of his (or her) days as a reminder, and that would be enough.

This man in Canada however, he ended a life with no justifiable reason. He knew what he did, he even requested upon completion of his act for someone to end his life. He walked around the bus with the head of the man he just killed in his hand. There will be no retribution for the victim's family, even if this guy was to be executed. Nothing will ever bring their son, brother, etc back.

it's entirely possible he got on the bus as a perfectly rational person, and while on the bus, something(or nothing at all) triggered him.

Really.

A rational person does not decide to carry 'on their person' a hunting knife while traveling on a Greyhound. Out west perhaps if he were going on a hunting trip, sure, in his baggage.. not on his person. That screams intent to me. Also, if you feel he could have been perfectly rational, you must think he does lack either education or common sense enough to not recognize he has a problem. Again, back to being aware of having a problem, even if the man just thinks at times he has difficulties controlling himself and recalling events, why then would he decide to carry a weapon on his person?

I have a hard time believing if someone can be completely rational at one time, utterly uncontrollable and unconscious of their actions the next, they don't see where they have a problem.

As far as what triggered him, that I answered several posts ago, his mental illness triggered him.

This guy, his mental capacity, I have no idea what it may be. All I know is from what his actions were, how he responded, what he's said, how's he acted since then (that's been publicized) and his stubbornness to accept treatment for his proven disorder, he should not be allowed to mix among other beings.

You haven't exactly given me an argument to dissect there, so I'm going to just respond with the sentiment that killing a person is a very permanent action. It's an action you have to live with the rest of your life, and it's something you can never undo. If you're going to accept capital punishment as a concept(which Canada doesn't, anyway), you need to step back and realize what an incredible power that is and how carefully it needs to be administered.

Also, I don't know the Canadian laws, but I do know that in the US, you DO NOT want to be found not guilty by insanity. It's not a peaches and cream ruling. In prison there are sentencing ranges. With mental wards you stay in the maximum time as you would have stayed in prison. If it was a 10-20 year crime, you stay in the ward TWENTY YEARS. The sane criminal that got 12 years also probably gets out on Parole well before 10 years pass... the insane guy stays the whole 20 years.

Also it's not cheaper to execute someone. People stay for years on death row, often never getting executed in the end. For the families of the victims and the convict... it's heart wrenching as the appeals process casts so much shadow and doubt. The quality of life is actually considered BETTER than in the general prison system. It's far more expensive to hold them in death row lockup.... and the appeals process costs millions of dollars, dwarfing the costs of just keeping someone in prison for life... sometimes 10 to 1 costwise.

These are questions I can't answer as I've never met him nor would I be qualified to diagnose him. What's clear is he has a mental illness which was the direct cause of the murder. What's unclear is pretty much everything else which is what I'm curious to know. Has he been diagnosed prior? What did he know of his own condition? What did the authorities know of his condition?

I'll also point out that you DO NOT present with schizophrenia at birth. It's something that begins usually as a teenager or in your twenties. It's entirely possible this was a very new emerging condition and he was just plain unprepared for it.

Like Skaw said, he went on that bus with a knife. If he knew he was "crazy", which btw, "crazy" people usually don't know they are, then why was he arming himself? He more than likely had full intention of killing.

I also ask the same question;

Why was he allowed on board with a knife? You can travel on a cross country bus with a knife but you can't fly cross country with one... how does that make sense? They should check people before allowing them on board.

Whether he thought he needed to arm himself because he believed he was in danger or because he wanted to 'prove' to others that he was 'crazy' and needed to be locked up... he had a weapon and he killed a man who had done nothing to provoke his actions.

This is not a case of "being over emotional", this is a case of brutality inflicted by one man on another man. If there was no motive behind it, it is even more likely to happen again, he is more dangerous than someone with reason because he shows no bias.

There is no "cure" for this man. Wasting money on treating him should not be an option. Lock him up and throw away the key.

Well, a lot of horseshit has been talked in this thread since I last viewed it. Your post makes some sense, so I quoted it instead :nyam:. The guy is off his nut. There's obviously no disputing that. The thing that's getting me is the variation in what people believe his punishment should be. For example, your closing line is "Wasting money on treating him should not be an option..." a few others have said this aswell, but yours was followed by "lock him up and throw away the key." Common sense, at last. "Grant his wish" is the biggest crock of bullshit I've ever heard. Yes, he armed himself, and will probably forever be a danger to our society, but why should that give anybody the right to end his life, even if he did "ask for it" right after he committed said crime.

I believe he should be locked up for the rest of his life, with no chance of ever getting out. If he is deemed "better" at any point in his life, move him to a prison from the loony bin; his rehabilitation may be complete, but his punishment is not. Killing him is ludicrous, considering the fact that there's a law for cases exactly like this. He was not responsible for what he did, the psychiatrists investigating have already confirmed this. So killing him as a punishment is out, and killing because he asked for it would be murder in itself.

It's easy to read a case of someone doing something horrific and say "Kill them." You have to look at things without letting emotion cloud what you're saying. Would I miss this guy if he died? No. But I sure as shit would have something to say about it if I heard my psychotic brother/father/whatever had been killed because he asked for it.

What would locking him in a mental institution accomplish?

Umm... allow HIS family (if there is any here) to visit him periodically and the selfish satisfaction he's still alive to fullfill their need of his physical being.

Allow physicians and professionals alike the chance to study this man (among the countless others with his disorder) to further investigate the nature of his disorder and how they may further medicate to nullify the symptoms.

Allow him life... a life he doesn't want.

>.> umm... tuutututuut tuut tuut.. can't think of anything else. Maybe I'm being bull headed, someone want to add?

What would putting this man to death accomplish?

He would and could never be a risk to society ever again.

He would never be a financial burden on his family or millions of others to merely keep him alive, fed and medicated while locked up for.. testing and humanity purposes.

He would get his wish as insane as it may be.

We could all sleep better at night.

So I didn't really say much when I posted before. Which really just mirrored my shock at the entire incident. Adding to that, the last time Creepy McWhakopants was brought up, things got seriously heated and the thread was closed.

Now, I am what you could define as a "Liberal". I vote democratic, I like animals and trees and I support Gay Marriage; yadda yadda yadda. Keep that in mind as I continue on...

He got on the bus. Spoke rationally with people about his smokes. Was completely fine. Decided, suddenly, to stab the victim multiple times and, post mortem, hack his head off with a hunting knife. A hunting knife. That's pretty fucked up.

Now, lets examine his sickness. Schizophrenia, when gone unchecked, can turn into a lot of things. We can go ahead and say he's at the worst point, I'm not sure anyone would argue that. However, if you want to go along and say "He knew what he was doing!" or "He had no idea..."; it may be both. Disassociative Identity Disorder (formerly known and Multiple Personality Disorder) often becomes a coping mechanism for those with Schizophrenia often to "rationalize" the "voices" (often odd thoughts that they know no normal person would have) in their head. For all we know, this guy was sitting next to the victim in a roiling moral crisis with his "other" and the "other" won out. That could be why he decided so "suddenly" to pounce on his prey. The other associations in his mind may have already been having a problem but the will weakened after so much time passing with "Let me hurt him" or "Kill it! Kill it!" running through his head. There is no question that this man is sick. There is no question that he's a danger to society.

Now, what should be done? He should be locked up in a high security institution. Jail is not for this person. Honestly, I'd be worried about the other prisoners. I want to know why he isn't taking his meds. I want to know whats really going on in his brain. I want to know if treatment can, at the very least, reduce him to a lower security inmate of a correctional mental institution. All of this, if he's a Canadian citizen. If he's an illegal Chinese hiding in Canada? Send him back to China. What will happen to him? He'll likely be killed. Is that my problem? Is that Canada's problem? No.

This is going to seem pretty savage of me... If the weak reveal themselves and are unable to function with society as a whole... they should be culled. The only thing they're going to do is either inspire people to emulate this (don't groan at me, you know people are sick enough to try to play crazy to get away with something) or bring down society with the cost of their living in cozier comfort than a lot of normal, working, stable citizenry. If you're crazy enough to chop someones fucking head off with a hunting knife (I own a very large and sharp one myself, I dont see it being any easy feat to behead someone with it), you've got to go.

He's not a Canadian national, how did he get to Canada?

It has now been revealed that when Vince Li arrived in Canada, he had a job lined up as a Computer Programmer and lived in Vancouver for a while.

This is how he got into Canada. He showed that he was able to secure a job before moving to the country. After proving to be incompetent, he got a job at a MacDonald’s then a Wal-Mart.

He would never be a financial burden on his family or millions of others...

Expedite him back to China. He showed that he was unable to hold down the job that gained him access to living in Canada and became a burden that will now cost our country money as well as the known fact that he is a danger to others. I know the crime was committed in Canada but obviously we don’t know how to deal with criminals of this calibur. Is this a trend though? Something that is seen ok by some societies? http://startelegram.typepad.com/cri...ech-woman-decapitated-with-kitchen-knife.html Why does this keep happening? Not just in Canada, but America as well.

The review board has the power to keep Li locked up indefinitely or, if he is no longer considered a risk, discharge him.

Victim’s mother said:
"Bear in mind, this isn't going to be saving any of us, we've already had our loss," she said. "It's to save everybody else. And that's been put on us now. And we sure as hell didn't volunteer for that job, but it is ours now."

This is the main fact. Because he was “crazy” when he committed the crime, he cannot be held accountable for his actions. Therefore, when he is deemed no longer “crazy”, (as was previously said, no one who is actually mentally ill to this extent can be cured, they will have to take medication for the rest of their life to counteract the chemical imbalance in their brain) he will be turned out into the population. This leads to an obvious fact, if he is set free and stops taking his medication this can happen again… if he is in fact “crazy”.

It is your own choice to end your own life. If he wanted to end his own life, what was he doing on a bus? Why wasn't he in his bath with the hairdryer or choked up on pills? There's a difference between Euthanasia and killing someone who once uttered "prease kill meh"

Again, you're arguing over whether killing an insane man who said "please kill me" is murder or euthanasia. Either way, it's wrong (in this situation, I'm not getting into a euthanasia debate.)

Riiiiight, so now his family didn't give a shit about him either? Sometimes, you don't know the full extent of other people's psychotic states. I'm sure if just 1 person knew this man was capable of such a thing, he would never have been allowed out on his own to commit such a crime. It's nothing to do with caring. The sad fact is that it often takes a tragedy such as this to show the true capabilities of certain human beings.

I'm not arguing that he shouldn't be held accountable because he's a loonball. That law is flawed, and should be changed. However, by the same logic, he shouldn't be tried the same way a normal human being would be, because he wasn't in a fit state of mind and as such isn't responsible for his actions. Yes, he should be kept away from the public for the rest of his life, but that doesn't mean ending his life because it's "cheaper" and "easier". If it helps, imagine this guy was one of your own family. You wouldn't be so quick to say "kill the crazy fuck" if he were.

duly noted that the guy was Chinese, and is not quoted as having said "prease" or "please".

The difference is that some people twisted enough want to "go out with a bang". I suppose we should be grateful he didn't blow the bus up.

Also, if my own brother were demented enough to kill someone not in self-defense, I'd disown him on the spot, and let whatever punishment await him. I wouldn't stop loving him, as he is my brother, but there are *some* unforgiveable acts.

And wasting money on imprisioning him is not a waste... right.

I agree with the death penalty in some cases. But if it is truely what this guy wants, tough shit for him. I'd rather him suffer in a hole for 25-life than get put out of his misery right away, getting what he 'wants'. No, I don't want to have to help pay for his meds and psychiatric treatment, which is why I said 'hole'. Solitary confinement is what he deserves, obviously he can't play well with others.
