Curious about people's economic situations

I'm not sure if I should be envious of anyone that's posted insofar. I really appreciate that I'm paying for my school, I think i'll stick with that =).

Envy is useless.

Envy is useless.

Useless yes, when you're lazy, but it is also a great motivator when you don't let it fuck with your head. I'm working towards getting all the shit I want... one day.

So you only want things because others have them?

I live off free government money ^^

Was fantastically stupendous when I was working, teaching [yes two jobs,] and saving. Moving and being unemployed royally sucked. Working one job, living frugally [which is NEVER a bad thing,] making decent money, and having enough time for a social life [including FF, LOL,] constitutes many good things. {Dragoon}{Woman}{Where???} D:

I cheat, I'm parent supported all the way!

My dad works in construction, and my mom works a tiny bit, I'm an undergraduate research assistant in school (only about $3-5k a year, but it's work at home like 8hrs a week tops) and make more than what my school costs in scholarships/financial aid, together my family totals around $65k/year.

My dad's old workplace was shut down due to lawsuits, but he was able to get another job within a month early this year (and according to my dad we have a good 6 months worth of money to live on incase shit hits the fan).

I currently have about $1800, zero debt (I always pay my credit cards in full), and have about $3000 coming in between June->August. I only have about $50/month in required expenses, (a few monthly services here and there), but spend about $100-$200 extra on food over the $160 a month I get from my dad for food.

So um, I guess I'm doing really well compared to most >_>, I rarely splurge except when it comes to food, so I get a lot of mileage for the money I get, and my parents cover most expenses (transportation, books, clothes, and housing)

As for how the economy is affecting my family as a whole, it's not affecting it much at all, we don't have a vacation planned this year, so I guess that's where we're "affected" the most. Usually we take a 1-2week vacation that costs a few thousand dollars over the summer. Also everyone uses my car for most things instead of the SUV for saving on gas. I barely use it on weekdays so I don't mind.

I work anywhere between 10-25 hrs a week(usually towards the low end of that), and go to school full time. I pay for school myself, and my parents take care of car insurance and cell phone, although I'll probably take on the cell phone and the new add on from my speeding ticket. =(

I live at home while going to school, so I don't pay for rent or food. I am horrible (HORRIBLE) with money, so it is something I really need to work on. I'm looking to get a second job and potential move out in the next year or so.

My parents make a decent salary, however... with myself in college, my younger sister entering college, and my older sister getting married in May, things are a bit tight. Utilities and oil going up doesn't help us out. We're not "omgwoeisme" poor, but we're not buying anything new and shiny anytime soon.

I don't make enough money to live on my own yet, to my dismay. I make enough working full time to pay what bills I do have. To own a house I think I'll have to either get a roommate or get married. It's sad. We get cost of living payraises yearly, and they're generous to do so, but I have to laugh a little if anyone thinks our wages are what it costs to live. It seems pretty much everyone is in the same boat. If you're single, you probably can't afford a house around here. Still, I live comfortably. I don't want to live at home w/ my parents forever, but they don't mind, and I'm patient. To summarize, I live well because I have a full time job that some people have to depend on, and I don't have to depend on it. Once I get my own place, I'll be the poorest sob in town. Unless I get a roommate, a gf, or something. There are houses that I could get that'd stretch my income to the absolute limit, but I always play it safe.

I wouldn't say I make an insane salary but I'm getting by quite comfortably.

I make enough to pay bills and save a minimal amount. I work for my father and his friend (two jobs, one office, oy) so I make 'part time' wages for both of them. One is legal and taxed the other is under the table. I could be making more with substantial to spend and save while being able to comfortably pay bills but for some reason I'm a wuss and can't quit the 'family business'.

I got two car loans to pay off, and bills to pay for. I'm also paying for my own college, so i'm not living all that comfortably at the moment, but hey things can only go up right?

My job is probably the easiest there is to find, I'm working at a daycare making $9/hr fdoing about 22hrs/wk. Still waiting on Unum to setup my interview date, I have the job already which is gonna bump me up to 25k/yr, I just gotta go through "standard procedures."

My parents make great money, and my family just came into a huge sum of money from my Great Uncles death, he left everything to my father, being a nice chunk of change, a log cabin, and 327 acres of farmland. Too bad my parents don't see fit to help me out, they want me to do everything on my own.

Wow... well Supahkhronic and myself both work he works full time me only parttime for now. We both have decent jobs. But unfortunatly we should make more .. hell i should make more dammit..lol sorry. We just got us a place lastmonth and money isnt as tight as we thought it was going to be.. We get groceries cause i love to cook. All our bills are paid. Gas is only 3.36 a gal here but the only place we drive to is work and major grocery shopping. Did i mention that i also have 2 boys 13 and 10 plus the have to wear uniforms to school but with all that. we still live pretty comfortably. Although being someone who used to make assloads of money to where i am now.. i think life is much easier when you arent caught up in material things.. But there are a lot of people in the town where i live that are having a very hard time.. And with my job i see them alot.. it really sucks when people call you and say look i know im 3 months behind but im going to pay you as soon as i can. Now some of these people make thier own situtations but others dont. The area i live in is not a wealthy area in all actuallity most of the people that live here live in poverty. Its really sad.. housing is horrible. Property owners are even worse.. this damn town is poor as shit.. and these assholes are trying to sell housees for outrageous prices. I mean honestly who the hell is going to pay 250k for a house in this town no one thats who.. so houses sit up on the sales block forever around here while people are struggling to find someplace to live. I honestly hate it here, and i would leave if my parents and my sis didnt live here.. mainly im waiting for my boys to finish HS and then go to college then im burning the hell outa this place and traveling walking backpacking i dont care im just getting away from here. lol Other than that yeah the economy sucks but if you are smart you can make ends meet and still have extra to have the things you want.

im currently in school to be an EMT, i live at home so rent and food are covered by my mom. I work 20 or so hours per week at a min wage job, but my only expenses are my cell phone bill for my girlfriend and i, and gas. I do ok, but am terrible when it comes to saving money. I pay for everything for my gf, who doesnt have a job, which doesnt bug me a whole lot.

All in all we get by, and when im done with school ill be making more than i currently do. its unfortunate EMT's make so little, cause you know... saving lives isnt worth as much as playing sports, or making movies. go figure

Another viewpoint

Thought I'd put up a different point of view just for contrast: Mikata & I are college graduates; we both worked 40+ hr jobs while in school and finished debt-free. That was quite a while ago. Now I'm retired & she's getting close to retirement from a gov't job. We saved towards retirement for our whole careers & paid off our house while doing so. We are going to be comfortable even with 2 kids (ages 8 & 10) still to educate. Planning on doing some interesting travel things after she retires. I guess my point is that it can be done, even with economic downturns, as long as you get a college education & are willing to work.

Well honestly, I live in Michigan so the economy has been shit for the past 7 years anyway. The worst in the country without question during this time. While the rest of the country was easing out of the recession a few years back we stayed in the shit, god bless being an automotive state with no other means of profit.

I help run a window maintenance service company. I run a truck out of metro Detroit areas and suburban communities. But the last few years have slowed down a bit due to people taking care of their own houses and whatnot. I still do ok, I'm not rolling in cash or anything but I typically make more than I spend. I'm paying off my truck atm which is almost done, I think I owe about a grand on it. My plan is to snag a crotch rocket this summer for entertainment since life has been boring since I sold my tuner car last year which I worked on for 5 years. I live at home to help my mom out with the bills since it has been rough on her when my dad and she divorced.

I owned a house 3 years ago which was about 95,000 on a good deal my agent brokered, but taxes in that area were insane so I ended up giving it to a buddy of mine who got married.

I more or less live check to check because I have the inability to save more than 3 grand lol. Hence getting rid of the tuner project, aka money sink.

sounds like most people on these boards have their act together

usually there's some sort of obstacle in life people have to face, it wouldn't be worth living if it were easy. Can't think anyone really with the room to talk.
