Cursed Sphere

Interesting tests. I'm surprised this is new at this point in the game, but always good to hear some new information.

It was an interesting find nonetheless. I was looking up BLU spells for a friend who couldn't look at wiki and there it was on the Flys category with a small notation that Cursed sphere is dark magic damage.

Um, may I ask exactly wtf he's trying to prove?

All I see is some random screenshots of Cursed Sphere damage, some of them resisted (as he's a lvl 70 Paladin...), and lvl 1 Elementals taking damage.

If you're a WHM with merited bar-spells you'll notice taking less damage from Cursed Sphere with Barwatera up. So unless they changed this recently, that isn't exactly proof of anything. If he want to try something seriously, do it on higher-level flies with soulvoiced dark-resist songs versus barwater with capped bar-merits.

He said himself he didn't do the test for longer then an hour. That's not enough time to prove anything imo.

He's not proving anything. Summoned avatars/spirits take half damage anyways.

If you look at the damage taken from the Water elemental and the Thunder elemental he summoned they both got one shotted while the Dark Elemental took only like very minimal damage. That's a bit more convincing. I mean the avatar he summoned is lvl 1 like his sub and you know avatars have a high resistance to their own element and usually the element that are weak to them, so why is this not leading to even prove that Cursed Sphere could be or is dark-based?

Addendum: Here's my 10 minutes of testing using my naked Bard with not buffs, equips, Water and Dark Carol.

Damage I took with no buffs:

It is strange, I agree, but unless they changed something from the last time I merited on imps/flies in Caedarva, where barwatera with bar-merits reduced the damage, I'll need more proof. Like, say, a WHM with barspell merits trying it out.

I'll try it myself when I have time.

Do you have Shellra V merited? I know that will block some damage since the attack is magical.

Yes, but as would Shell V. There's a noticeable difference between Shell V + fully merited bar-spell with blessed briault and only Shell V. A difference of 15 Magic Defense Bonus. The easiest way to see if its Water-based damage is to compare the damage with Barwater (with merits, as the merits only add 10 Magic Defense to the same element) up and without Barwater up, I'm not entirely sure why he didn't do that in the first place.

I still don't believe you will see any damage difference with Barwatera aside from damage taken from Venom since that is water-based. If you or someone else get a consistent difference in damage with barwatera after a Cursed Sphere I'll be surprised and wonder why it will be like that.

But one thing to remember from the tests that I showed in the OP. Summoned spirits and regular elementals found in areas will always take minimal damage to attacks and spells that are based on their own element and magic they are strong against (i.e. Earth > Thunder) regardless of the attacker's level. Like in the OP: The May Flys are level 22-25 and Cursed Sphere hit the level one summoned spirits. If this ability was water-based like the Blue spell is, then the water spirit would not have been one-shotted, the thunder spirit would not have been one shotted, but the Dark spirit would have been one shotted. Also I would not have taken half the damage with Dark Carol as opposed to Water Carol if it was truly water-based.

Sometimes testing doesn't have to be as complicated full merits and formulas. A simple test can save alot of time. But you never know really. This damage could be limited to just the Zilart area flys and not the Aht Urghan flies.

There is an interesting note I found on wiki about the Spongilla Fly:

Notes:

* Water based magic seems to resist less than ice based magic on this particular fly.
