cut your hair or don't come back to school.

hehe, that doesn't make sense. Basing hiring someone on appearance is usually considered discrimination from what I have been told. Like.. you can't base it on their body weight, race, sex, etc.. if you're saying "ok, well.. we're allowed to discriminate over this but not over this" than that's kinda... stupid. But I'm more of an extremist person anyways and am more "all or nothing"

I don't blame anyone for not wanting to hire someone that looks like they think hygiene is a chore.

It is a fucking chore, but it's a chore I've always done.

Seriously, do you want someone helping you or working for you that looks like he just came out of some basement where they've been watching Labyrinth all day, or someone who's well groomed, and looks like he showered today.

Seriously? I'd prefer the former. I prefer it when the guy behind the counter calls me dude instead of sir, it feels more natural. I prefer dealing with people that are like me, not some goody-two-shoe stick-up-his-ass fake smile fucker.

in Sweden we can pretty much wear whatever we like. That's why we have 12-year old girls dressing like Paris Hilton with a mask of make-up. Seriously, if you dragged our finger over their face, you'd see a 3mm deep scratch in their make-up. Its disgusting, really.

Unfortunately, the same happens in the UK =/

Stupid dumbass bad role models ><

F the lot of you.

Want a job? Man up and shave your head.

Yes, one of my ears is lopsided. Kiss my ass.

Yes some places will have a dress code, but if they hire an employee with long hair, I can only guess you work with food, there are hair nets and rubber bands to keep the hair back. As I said its discriminatory to fire or not hire someone based on having long hair and the company can have a shit storm coming at them if someone really wanted to pursue a lawsuit for discrimination.

"You didn't hire me because I have long hair"
"No we found somebody better suited to the job"

Lawsuit deferred.

There are some businesses where they are known for how their employee's look, so hiring/firing people based on their appearance is pretty standard. If you've ever eaten at a Hooters restaurant you'll know what I mean.

Shit I didn't know I had to be in a metal band to have long hair and we all must be hippies for having long hair...

Oh wait I discredited your post when you made up a word for professionalism.

soo i cant use a word professionalness instead of professionalism when you idiots use words and phrases like "leet sauce" or "kewl"? good talk
that word is not half as bad as some of the words you people make up around here. you might as well discredit the majority of the post on the internet then.

Then that is just your personal preference. In a professional world you don't call other people "Dude" or acknowledge them with a "Sup" or for humours sake at a board meeting "Morning bitches".

This is how the professional world works and you can't expect them to break the mold over hiring a person with long hair. Sharpe brought up good point and they can just tell you that they found someone with better qualifications and the lawsuit is averted.

Why does a job even matter here? The story says he leaves school early to work (albeit a mcjob, but he's still in school, whatever), so obviously he's not having any trouble with that.

Wait.... what?
In the literal sense, taking a shower is a chore. But it's routine enough and feel-good enough that we don't complain that we have to do it (unlike, say, teenagers and their messy room).

Actually, the reason people don't tend to hire people that look a certain way isn't because they don't want people like that representing them. Its based on broad generalization.

When someone wears tatoos, piercings, or look "lazy" or "slobby", its most of the time not because they don't like the way they look. They put them inside a box, and think "This guy looks lazy", and thus assume he will be the type that comes late to work, doesn't pull his weight etc. That's what's called First Impression. Someone with piercings and tatoos doesn't necessarily look lazy and slobby, but it DOES send a message about how the person is as a person. It isn't necessarily true, but its a safe card not to hire them.

Then there's the places like Hooters that only hire a certain type of person, but that is more often than not people that work directly with customers. For example, a store selling skating clothes will not want to hire someone dressed like a rich brat, because that's not the kind of style they represent.

If you're looking for a desk job, its better to dress respectable, since that's the message you want to send out. If you want to keep your tatoos, piercings etc. its better to look for a job that fits your style, like a CD store. Finding a girl and finding a job is pretty much the same deal. You're selling yourself. You hide your bad sides, and talk a lot about your good sides. And you can lie a bit too. Its the very same thing, really.

However, the same does not apply when attending a school, in my opinion. Schools should encourage their students to find themselves, who they are as a person. What they represent, etc. By putting them inside a box and forcing them to dress and look a certain way that they don't feel comfortable with, just isn't beneficial.

Even those 12-year old kids dressing like Peris Hilton is, in a way, expressing themselves. They're screaming of low self-esteem and attention. But that's who they are. They're still in the process of finding themselves.

People do it to me all the time...lol. I've even done it to other people. When I used to work at k-mart I'd address the other employee's (who I knew were fine with it) as fag or dumbass or something like that, as long as there were no customers around. And even to the customers if I could tell they were my kinda people, I'd call them dude or something like that. Of course when a business man in his suit and tie came in or some soccer mom I'd call them sir and ma'am respectively. I never got in trouble for doing any of that either. People would prefer to work in a relaxed enviroment, not some wound up tight ass place where you have to be careful of every little rule and formality.

The thing I don't like with the "business" world, is that everyone ALWAYS have a strict "The customer is always right" kind of attitude. But in reality, the customer isn't always right. A great deal of the time, they're wrong. Not only are they wrong, they're borderline moronic. Even when a customer comes inside and think they're better than everyone else and feel they can go past everyone in the queue because they're in a hurry, and then get pissed off when you take another customer before them, you need to handle them with respect and put on a fake smile, even though you want to say "GET TO THE FUCKING BACK OF THE LINE YOU FUCKING WHORE".

The guy at Mc. Donalds that got fed up with a customer and yelled "Shut up you fucking idiot. We don't fucking care" is my hero. No matter how mad the other customers got at him for yelling that to the moron holding up the line for 10 min because he complained about shit to the girl taking orders, I agree with him. People are fucking stupid.

Anyway, I have to agree with Excalibur. "Sir" and "Ma'am" feels so shallow and boring. You know they only use it because they have to, and not because that's how they are as a person. I, too, use much more neutral speaking when talking to customers. Mainly because it feels more natural, and not so forced and boring.

I agree about working in a relaxed environment but at my job it's all about formalities. At my current job everything is "Sir" or "Ma'am". The first time I said "Cool." to a customer my boss came down on me for that. The incident was a slip-of-the-tongue and don't do it anymore lol.

Man if i went to this school i would be a complete douchebag about it. I would shave my head and get a tattoo on the back of my head so that they have to decide whether or not they wanna see the tat or let me wear a hat.

Wow...I would never last in a place like that.

Fucking win.

EDIT: Actually....if they think of it they might make you wear a wig...and that would suck balls.

Why are you all whining? Private schools. Don't like the policy? Go to public. Seriously, are you mentally handicapped or what? It says DIRECTLY no long hair.
Deal with it or gtfo.

man thats some stupid stuff.
I had long hair for years, i had a pony tail, dreadlocks, whatever.
I was in metal bands but thats besides the point as thats a stereotype.
I had my hair long because i liked it long. I never had a complaint at school or at my jobs.
Infact i had long hair up until this past year when i decided i wanted to know what being bald felt like and shaved it all off.
my hair has since grown back into a shorter much more fitting style for me, its probly the best my hair has ever looked and it wasnt planned, i dont think i will be going back to long hair.
I have not had a job in well over a year and a half, I have no diploma or GED yet which is one of the downfalls,
But my family would say it was my hair and piercings that cause it.
I have both ears pierced and a labret piercing, which usually when going in for a job interview, i would take them out as much as i hated the hell out of having to do it because im a firm believer of accepting people for who they are and not what you translate their appearance to be.
Me and my wifes parents have had fights regarding this before.
Infact, In relation to the long hair issue.
When my wife was in the hospital after a near fatal blood clot surgery while she was pregnant with my daughter, he father got in a fight with me on her hospital rooms phone which ended with him yelling
"Cut your G damn hair and be a man for once dammit"
to which i promptly replied by hanging up on him. Told my wife he had no right to tell me how to be and im not changing myself for anyone.
But this case is completley stupid, no one has the right to punish you for being yourself and because of your appearance.
