Got my first speeding ticket today on the way back to school from thanksgiving break. I went 20 over so im screwed! Insurance is gonna go off the roof...byebye car :(

Speeding tickets suck. The worst part is that anywhere from 11-29 miles over the speed limit get the same punishment. 6 points I think, so not a full suspension. Just gotta watch your ass.

Thats preety shity but had it coming if your speeding. 2 ways not get caught
1 go the right speed
2 go over 180mph

What?

Speed cameras can not get you if your going over 180mph (think it might be 182mph)
you realize thats completely bogus, right?

I would highly recommend fighting it in court. Usually if it is your first offense they'll cut you a break, you might even get lucky and the cop won't show (happened to my mom one time). When I got my first speeding ticket (21 over + expired plates and no proof of insurance....yeah) I went to the court and they cut me a deal where they would charge me for defective equipment (0 point ticket) and I would have to pay the fee but insurance would not go up. Things like this are common for a first offense, but don't expect any breaks if you are a repeat offender or get anything above a 4 point ticket.

Yeah this is my first offense ever. What Ima do is get a lawyer, and he will go to court for me, and will drop the points on my ticket and my insurance wont go up. I have connections to get a good lawyer. My close friends dad is a good friend with a top lawyer which got my friend off two 20+ speeding tickets totally. So hopefully thatll all fall through and Ill just have to pay for the fees for lawyer and ticket fines and fees.

Yeaahhhhhh word of advice, do NOT speed near the end of the month!

even if your 5-6mph over (40-41 in a 35 mph zone), you're much more likely to get a ticket towards the end of the month because most police departments have quotas to fill (they have to give out a # of tickets each month). So if they need a few more, they're willing to snipe off some one edging speeding

edit: with the court case you're gonna do, depending on grades/extracurriculars, they will most likely still give you a period of time, in which if you get caught speeding they'll reapply the points on your license from the previous ticket and add the ones from the new ticket.

happened to me and a few others i know. i have 16 more days to go without speeding to have no insurance rates rise and no points on my license. i was going 54 in a 35 (down a barren hill mind you), and i had to go 6 months with out another ticket to be off free.

Don't pay for a lawyer for traffic court, just walk in and talk to the judge. Just say you were trying to get back to school as quickly as possible from break, and you were driving a little bit fast. If you have good grades and no other infractions, it'll probably not be that bad.

I've never heard of anyone getting more then 2 pts for speeding, (Unless they were waaayyy over, and then it's reckless op) I've heard or people not getting any. You can't even argue a case in court the first time I think anyway. You either plead guilty, not guilty, or no contest. If you plead no contest to judge rules right there, and gives you fines, and maybe points. If you plead not guilty, you get a date, and then come back and argue your side, and a lot of times the officer doesn't even come. Never plead guilty.

Look at your ticket and make sure everything is right, you make, modeal, plate, color everything because if anything is wrong, your ticket is thrown out.

Finally never speed at the end of months, and never ever speed around any kind of holiday, especially one where a lot of people are going to be on the road or drinking.

I agree with most of this, but I think if you have a connection with a lawyer and can get services for a moderate price it could pay out in the long run. I don't know what state you are in but if you're in a state with No-fault insurance you can look at a 70-80% increase on yearly insurance fees, no fault you'll be looking at about 50-60%. If you can get a lawyer to bring your ticket down to 0 points you could save your fees within your first two months. Don't forget it takes a very long time for points to go off your record so you'll be looking at spending a lot of money over 7 years (time in this state to get points off record) with a new car you're looking at over $8,000 just for getting a one point ticket.

The cost of the ticket is nothing, its the insurance that will get ya.

Another possible option: I'm not sure how old you are but most states have programs for speeding minors (under 18 in some and some states will forgive you up to 20) will get to take a small 8~12 hour course and if you make all your classes and pass at the end you'll get your points taken away and a guarentee that your next ticket will be points. But, that only works if you are under 20 (or 18) and in a state with one of these programs.

Bro, you're in the clear, at least if you play your cards right. When I got my first speeding ticket, I was going 77 in a 40. On top of that, I was nervous, and couldn't find my registration in my glove box. I had lost my drivers license literally the day before hand, and DMV had fucked up my license plates unbeknownst to me.

27 over, no drivers license, invalid plates, couldn't find registration or insurance card (of course, they were in the bottom of my glove compartment -. -)

The ticket was $978. The day I went before the judge, he marked it as a first time offense, and since I brought everything that I was defficiant of, and it was proven that the plates were in fact a mistake by DMV, that the infraction was only speeding. Since it was a first time offense, all charges were dropped so long as I went to a driving recreation course that lasted 8 hours of the day. If you missed it, you were fucked.

You'll be fine.

I thank Ms. Charlotte Green of Tazewell TN for giving me my first speeding ticket. I was barreling down a mountain a whole 8 mph over the speed limit when unbeknownst to me, the state trooper aforementioned decided the semi in front of me wasn't worth the paperwork.

I went to court, told the judge I'd take a driving course, and spent 8 hours in class about 4 weeks later. Sent the certificate to the judge and kazaam, no ticket no points, no insurance hikes.

/otherrant - Insurance can suck on my dick. legalized robbery all it is god damn I fucking hate insurance companies.

Whoever said 180... good plan(if no cameras are around). Cops won't even be able to catch you. Crown Vics top at 135ish, and unless your in one of the select states with the Camaros(which even then top at 152)... youre set. Now... just to get a car that goes 180....

*Zooooooooooooom*
Cop1: What the fuck? How fast was he going?
Cop2: ... 180? Fuck that dude, we ain't catching him.
*silence*
Cop1: What was that anyways?
Cop2: ... not sure, think it was red though.

You sure it wasn't 180 kilometers per hour? 180mph is sort of unfeasible. Kilometers I believe is the real label, not miles.
