Gyllenhaal taking Holmes' place in 'Batman' sequel

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Maggie Gyllenhaal is in final negotiations to replace Katie Holmes in "The Dark Knight," the sequel to "Batman Begins."

Gyllenhaal would play D.A. Rachel Dawes, the love interest to Bruce Wayne/Batman (Christian Bale). Representatives for Holmes said she was unable to reprise her role because of scheduling conflicts.

Gyllenhaal, who earned critical raves for her starring turn in the indie "Sherrybaby," was last seen in "Stranger Than Fiction" and "World Trade Center." She also lent her voice to the Oscar-nominated animated feature "Monster House."

"I'm extremely excited to work with an actress of Maggie's caliber, and she's a great addition to the cast as we continue our story," said "Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan.

Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Gary Oldman will return from the first film. Heath Ledger has joined the cast as the Joker, while Aaron Eckhart will play D.A. Harvey Dent, also known as the villainous Two-Face.

I love Maggie Gyllenhaal, so this is pretty exciting. I also despise Katie Holmes' "crooked mouth" style of talking, which seriously bugged the hell out of me during Batman Begins.
 
maggie rocks, i grew up with katie around here tho, not very close friends, we just had alot of joint friends so i didnt know her well. cant really say i like her or i dont, she made some dumb decisions tho. lol tom cruise.
 
"Scheduling conflicts", aka Tom won't let her out of the closet, he gets lonely when she's not there.
 
Batman Begins was awesome, though honestly I didn't really feel like Katie's acting was very good in that movie so I'm all for giving her the boot anyway for the sequel. Joker and Two-Face both? Hot.

Double agreed, I'm a huge Batman fan and was doing the happy feets dance when she got the boot.
 
I really hope that Dent is just Dent and not two-face yet. This is the JOKER! No need for a second villian. They tried it in previous movies and it was always bad.
 
Hey hey.. Batman Returns pulled it off very well. Its the others that try to follow and failed. >_>;

I think the Joker himself is too big to share a movie. He is Batman's main bad guy.
 
they should just make a movie about the joker, and batman can be the secondary character.
 
They shouldn't give Gyllenhaal the Rachel Dawkes roll. It won't be difficult at all to make her a new one, to avoid the weirdness viewers pass through when production switches an actor...

It won't look good when we watch the 3 pictures back to back in the future.
