Multi-Plat Dark Souls (Demon's Souls 2! Sort of)

Ugh, this is a mess. I read the boxed version uses Games for Windows Live, yet it isn't listed in that category, simply the Games for Windows category, which is generally OK aside from us knowing it's going to be a cheap port. The official box has been released too and it doesn't have the "Live" tag on it nor a Steamworks notice (obviously something like this is subject to change, just saying). I read the steam version uses Steamworks, yet it's not listed to do so, it only lists as being sold on Steam. Another kink, there are a bunch of games that are Games for Windows (without the Live) that use Steamworks, like Rage for instance. So who knows, but I do know this, Steamworks is infinity greater than GFWL so hell yes, I'll be able to buy it, where as if GFWL I wouldn't touch it with a stick. I use to take issue with Steam, because I hate digital distribution but it's the standard anymore, and they're damn good in every area with it so they've won me over.

That said, the porters are leaving me worried. Apparently it's just going to be a straight port, no high-resolution textures, very little options, keyboard controls being cited as the unintended way to play the game, etc. The worst of it all? As if not properly supporting Keyboard and mouse controls, they are capping the frames and flat out said, do not expect the framerate in areas like Blighttown to be alleviated just because it's on the PC. The only hope for any of this is that since From aren't port heavy, they'll probably leave enough of the game's files easily accessible (due to ignorance or being lazy) for the community to fix it for them.

All that said, it'll be just as good at the least, with more content. Can't wait; August is gonna be awesome.

Well, considering that the team has never made a game for PC I can kinda see the keyboard thing as being an issue and I dunno if they'd be able to nail down truly perfect controls in this amount of time. And high-res textures take a lot of time. And they said no official modding support only cause they are new and not sure how to handle that. So ya.. I dunno, I'm a bit forgiving considering it's their first PC port to my knowledge that they're doing. I think any other game from them was ported by someone else for PC. I dunno though for sure.

I do hope they'll listen to people though and their next souls game (come on, you know they are making one) will make the game for PS3, 360, and PC with a proper PC version.

I'm mostly sad that the DLC for console is delayed until Winter even though it doesn't need to be :(

Also, steam has some issues with me. I hate that I have to wait for their servers before I can play a game on my computer already. If there's an issue and all. But at least WHEN I play the game itself it doesn't require interaction with their servers. And I do hate that if you don't set it to offline mode you can't use any of YOUR games you paid for, and pissed that if I were to ever be banned (nothing I do since I don't really talk to anyone or do anything, but what if I was hacked and they did stuff to get me banned? I've heard many a times Steam being slow to respond or even out right refusing to revert the ban) that's a LOT of MY property I can't use.

It's a big stupid problem these days where laws aren't accurately set for modern times so that games, digital stuff in general, are owned by the people who buy them -_- getting stupid....

Eh, if they're not going to do it right, then they don't even need to bother. It's a PC game, can't figure out how to make the controls work (why even bother, hell, let me set them up myself)? Then piss off, if they can't even manage that, think about what else they can't manage. High-res textures aren't so bad either, hell, if Capcom is doing it, that alone says it's fast and cheap.

As for the mods thing, that's hardly going to be an issue. Just because it doesn't support mods doesn't mean it wont get modded. There are tons of games without mod support that get modded, settings being the easiest thing to do so long as they aren't locked down in a wordpad vault.

I think they're missing out on a gold mine though. A game like that with mod support like Skyrim... would there be any reason to buy games anymore until they release a new Souls? No, not really.

Awww.... they could have at least mentioned if they'd be willing to patch improve the PC versions (and possibly the console ones? Could those even be? hmm)

Eh, I doubt it. If they were going to do it on consoles they'd have already done it I'd imagine. And though they are very honest in their porting ability, the sheer lack of will to do the best job possible leads me to believe they'll put it out and leave it alone. I mean, they're honestly going to release a bad port, knowing it's bad. That says, as good as they are at making great games, they don't so much care for the quality of the game, just that they can put it out and have it function, some what.

I dunno, if it's only as bad as the console's framerate, I won't mind. I never had that much of a problem with frame drops. Then again, that's on the PS3 version. Wonder if it's really bad on the 360 one hmm.

I own both, it's equally bad. The only reason I could see fit to buy the game yet again, is if it ran better, which I'm gathering it wont.

Why'd you get both? :O I only got PS3 since friend has PS3 (same friend that I played Dragon's Dogma at their house and made me wanna get it, which, tbh, has been fun for a long time, I never get tired of the big ol' monster fights) and ya... I was thinking of getting Dark Souls for PC, but I wanna know how well people will mod it too. And that'll take awhile to see.

Why I got both eh... Well, I tried my best to shrug the game off until it went down to $30, but that didn't work. The day it came out I decided I had to have it. The only copy I could find locally was of the 360 version so I grabbed it. Turns out it was easy to hack and I'd say the good majority of my invaders were maxed out completely, basically it was a frickin' mess, so after I got 1000 GS I sold it for $40. By this time the PS3 version had gone on sale locally for $45 so I grabbed it. Turned out to be for the best, the PS3 community is not only larger, but also mod free (I haven't seen the tools for this version so I assume they do not exist, probably because the save file is locked). Also, playing a Souls game on the 360 just felt so damn wrong.

Does Dragon's Dogma have a hard mode at all? My only reserves on it after it falls to $30 is that normal mode was way, way too easy for me.

PS3 version DOES have a lot larger community cause that's where the Demon's Souls guys are too (speaking of that, they extended the servers again so they'll stay open more <3)

As for Dragon's Dogma, the difficulty increases in "end game" and there's the UR Dragon which gets stronger the more/faster people kill it.

Meh, I'd rather have the entire game be harder. Oh well, got plenty to do until it's cheap. PSO2 starts tomorrow so that alone is gonna crush my life for a while.

Phantasy Star Online 2. Japanese version just hit open beta but SEGA are pretty much counting it as fully released save for the cash shop. I tell you, this could very well be the future of online gaming (MMOs anyway). It's the best PSO to come out since the original, and it's very high quality as well. 100% free, even the client, and the cash shop isn't pay-to-win at all (at current and the head honcho despises that sort of stuff as well), it's so well done it's mind blowing; I'm normally disgusted by cash shop models.

The options menu has a language pull down bar for game text and the game code has entrances for English, German, Spanish, French, etc. for the slot. So it's looking like we'll share the same client and servers so I figure why not get a head start :D

The game really is mind blowing for me, but then again, havin' to suffer through PSU and all it's iterations may have me blowing it out of proportion. I hope everyone is right about the client and all, if we get our own version it's going to be PSU all over again... very little support and I think 2 years behind in content when they shut the servers down for PC/PS2 and the Xbox version, which shuts down in September, is probably more than 2 years behind at this point. All the more reason to play on the JPN client now I suppose and see how it turns out.

I never played PSO other than a bit at a friend's and I think his was offline for some reason. I'll prolly check it out :P need to learn more about it.

Figured we should discuss Dark Souls being released for PC. Personally I love it still. Sure the keyboard/mouse controls are meh, but it's designed for a controller and not hard to use a controller with it (just as good). The frame rate capped at 30 FPS was no big deal and it's a smooth 30 FPS continuously through-out the game. To change it from 30 would change the timing of attacks for both the player and the enemy and that is a lot more work than people realize for very little real benefit. The resolution? well, no big deal tbh. It still looks good. I think some people are just way too much of graphics whores. And the thing about FROM Software is that they mentioned these would all be potential issues to people before hand. Before it was even released and several times. So imo no one has a right to complain about things they should have known about... bleh at stupid people feeling entitled >.>

People who bought it have every right to feel "entitled." Just because From was up front doesn't excuse the fact that this port is probably the worst PC port ever made. I think I was in the same boat as a lot of people in that we knew it was going to be bad, but... not this bad. All that said, it's light years better than the console versions and given that the community has already fixed some of the problems, we're gettin' toward that game we all wanted to begin with.

About the graphics, you should realize, it's more than that. It's not so much the graphics are bad (Which they are if you don't use the mod), it's more that the game is locked to a resolution and aspect ratio that are no longer common; instead of scaling the game to fit other sizes, it instead will deform the image (stretch and skew). On top of that, there is letterboxing... I really shouldn't have to go on, it's really much bigger than the game looking like a pile of dog mess.

Then the whole Keyboard and Mouse thing. From ought to be burned to the ground for that. You don't make or port a game for a platform and not keep its native controls in mind. It's really no different from them making the game on PS3 (which they did) porting it to 360 and then telling the 360 crowd it was made for a PS3, so use a PS3 controller. The only difference is that wouldn't work, aside from that, same basic thought process.

Anyway, all in all easily the worst port I have ever seen, but it's by far the best version of the game given the console versions' framrate issues.
