So Im really interested in this. Maybe pimp my taru out or something, how do I do it? I need ejamacated!!!

lately i've been thinking about changing my .dat files too.....

i really dont like changing files around for fear i'll perminently fuck it up.

You can always uninstall/reinstall ... takes forever but

You can't mess up your files if you back things up.

Do what I do. Say you wanna replace 1-39-43.dat (not quite sure on the number, but that should be a hume female bodypeice). Rename the original 43.dat to, like, 43o.dat, and then put in the dat you want as 43.dat. Then if you screwed up, take it out, and rename 43o back to 43. No harm done.

You look in your playonline/squareenix/FFXI folder for the ROM folders. In each ROM folder is a ton of numbered folders, in each one of those is a ton of numbered files like xxx.DAT. To make a .dat change, you take the .dat for what you want to add and replace the .dat file for where you want to put it. So for example if you want to replace the leather vest for Taru's you'd go to the ROM/47 folder and replace 18.DAT with the .dat for the new body armor.

I HIGHLY recommend making a backup of the original file. I move mine to another folder with the path to the .dat in the name; so that leather vest would get renamed 1-47-18.dat and I'd know where it went, but others just rename the file in the original folder to something like 18a.dat and that works too.

My question is.... How do I know which ROM file and which number I put each thing in?

Model viewer (google altanaview for it) will tell you the files.

1-39-43.dat = ROM folder (ROM2 = RoZ, ROM3 = CoP, ROM4 = AU, but you'll probably never touch those), folder 39, 43.dat

Next question. I like the face/hair change but it has multipe .dat's ... How do I change that?

What do you mean? There's only 1 .dat for every face/hair choice.

FFXI.dats that Mai linked to is the best one I've found. Devi's website has big collections, but nothing made within the last 6 months or so. When you downloaded the .dat pack, it probably had multiple heads you could pick from.

Ok one last question ..
The armor pieces, do they link to a piece of armor or do they show no matter what your wearing?

You -can- swap a body armor for a hands peice, and the body armor will show... but it's not reccomended because you'll have no hands.

The new armor takes the place of the old armor. Going back to my example, whatever you replace the leather vest with, whenever there's a taru wearing a leather vest, you'll see whatever you replaced it with.
