wow, you guys are very critical of gear in particular.

I'm 59 Blm and I don't have a Darkstaff, hell I've never even had the amount of gil a Darkstaff costs in my possesion all at once. So sue me.

I think gimp is someone who does things counter productive, like put /p messages in macros for abilitys like Boost, Shield Bash, or Jump.
this also goes for spells like Blind, Paralyze, Drain, Absorb <stat>, or bringing out a summon monster. Useless /party spam is gimpy and pisses me off.

Also, partys with the wrong Makeup are gimpy. i.e. Whm whm Drg Sam rdm inviting me to join a party..... that's gimpy.

Not having erase dosen't make you gimpy if you don't plan to use it as your main. I won't bother buying it till my blm can use it with whm Subjob.

p.s. to keep from stealing the thread, I'll check the Flameboard for responses to my gear/spellbook. Just start a thread called Trippy is a gimp if you got beef about it.

Did you mean whm/drg + sam/rdm, or something? Sorry but that sorta made no sense to me at all...reword?

No, he was listing 5 members in a possible party that had no tank and was looking to add him as a blm.

Trippy, this is not a flame but a suggestion. You might want to consider farming for a darkstaff and an ice staff at least... they really do make a significant difference, and there are many ways to make gil in this game.

I only need 20 accuracy? I have 37 lol Does that make me gimp

Yea yea... I meant melees... not mages or rangers and crap...

 A dark staff hardly costs that much.. I've had one since about lvl 54.. and im a Dark Knight for crying out loud. If you've never had that much gil in your possession at once then damn I feel sorry for you. O.o

/comfort

Ive gotta get 200k more (well more now since the price raised) if I want to buy a second sniper's ring. That's assuming I dont get lucky and get an archer's ring here sometime soon. Then I've gotta start saving up for a Haubergeon, what are they now? 2.5 Mil? Now that's a problem.

I do have an Ice staff. I mean, +10 Elemental Magic Bonus, how could I resist. And besides, it was only 20k when I got it.

I have actually been working on a way to farm lately. I'm lvling pld so I can farm without having to sit every 4 minutes. I Figure I'll take it to 50 or so and look fer somethin to farm. If that dosen't work.... *sigh* I suppose I'll give in and start a craft.

But hey, at least I'm not a gil purchaser. :-)

Wow... just wow trippy... That is pathetic... How the flying f*** can you not have arguably one of the most important items for a mage ever... Just wow... Let me guess you are a tarutaru BLM that goes "I ahve the most MP and INT of any race... I don't need noo G3ARzZ!!!111

#1 If there was a single most important peice of gear for a mage, it would be a Vermillion Cloak.

#2 It's not like my gear sucks. It is as follows.
Ice Staff
Seers Crown +1
Black Neckerchief
Morian Earringx2
Wizard's Coat
Wizards Gloves
Zircon Ringx2
Red Cape +1
Mercenary Capraints Belt
Wizards Tonbon
Wizards Pesatos

#3 I don't type like that. I prefer to use proper grammer.

#4 I am not Pathetic. By any means. If you think I should have a Dark Staff so bad, buy me one and send it to me or don't Party with me.

end

Dark staff > vermillion cloak in requiredness and importance.

I agree, Dark staff is more important than V. Cloak... The refresh isnt all that great... but the +10 mp per healing tick is just great, and combined with clear mind its just about the best thing there is.

Also, you said you have the Wizard's petasos plus a seers crown +1... why? I replaced my crown with a dirty old hat and didnt look back ^.^

that +20 acc....

you have to be a millionair these days to afford that man.. not having 3-4mil worth of equipment makes you a gimp now? ;o

thats like telling a whm they are a gimp if they dont have a nobles tunic or v. cloak

I have +15 ACC and I'm a freakin' PLD, lol. Just a Life Belt and Merman's Gorget, about 220k right there.

P.S. Yes, not having a Dark Staff at 51+ for anyone with MP (except maybe a DRK) is unacceptable. It's one of the cheapest elemental staves, and it is immensely, immensely useful. When someone is lacking it, you don't need to see if they equip it when they rest; you need only stare at their MP crawling up while everyone else is full.

theres no maybe in that. drk doesnt rest in pt. dark staff will only help drks for soloing but still not a necessity

I'm a brd and I didn't get a dark staff until I got my whm to 51. I don't even bring my dark staff when I lvl brd. I have 263 mp and I almost never rest. Usually, I hit mages (pld if I'm in a pt with one) with ballad 1 & 2, then I go off to pull. Every now and then, I'll use up my mp doing curaga 2 and I'll rest during the fight. I just haven't seen a real need to bring a dark staff. With clear mind, errant body and both ballads, it really doesn't take me long to gain most of my mp back. So, not everyone needs it.

BRDs do not have MP, their subjob has MP. Hell they do not even need to sub WHM, if they subbed, say BST they would probaly just as well off except in a very few situations.

Personaly my defineition of gimp, the biggies at least, is as follows:

1)underlvled subjob/inapropriate subjob
2)Missing a glaringly obviuse piece of gear.
3)Having a piece of useless gear.
4)Not eating or using important Job abilities.
5)Unable to SC or magic burst.
6)For mages not having every concevable spell needed in a battle. (Yes that means erase)
7)If you have MP post 51, lacking Dark Staff.
8)Lacking the aproptiate staves for your job (IE WHM should have light Staff).
9)Lacking +20 Accuracy, or more by lvl 60.
10)Saying, I do not need to buy armor I am going to get AF.
11)Using AF when their are better choices.

I think I cover most of the glaring basics.

I agree with 1-5, but seriously, Erase is a spell that isn't really needed early on, in my opinion, and it costs ALOT. and the +20 Acc, sure if you have the gil, go for it, but I'm sorry, if I don't have the gil, I'm not gonna, I have my lifebelt, I have my coral gorget and assault earring, that's all I use. and alot of the time, "better choices" are way too expensive, and just using AF takes alot of the stress away. And complaining about people not having Dark staves or not having spells like Erase, if you feel it's so important....BUY IT FOR THEM. You'll be much happier later.

If I knew a mage was lacking a darkstaff such as a blm, whm, smn, rdm, and sometimes pld depending on the setup if they're going to also SC or not I wouldn't invite them. I don't think I'm being an ass, I really enjoy having to stop at chain 1-2 and rest to full  . Dark staff is the most importent item ever for a mage and it's not even that expensive. And the other staves are equally helpful although more as bonuses, minus icestaff.

-Blm's not owning int+1 earrings. I wouldn't jump all over them for not having them at earlier levels, but around 50 xp becomes alot more serious, by around then I expect such things.

I agree very much a melee should have about +20 acc or more by 60. Lifebelt is 80k, snipers are about 500k each, that's not that bad. And all melee's minus thief get excess to more cheaper acc equips such as collar, assault earrings, mufflers, and other heavier but cost efficent equipment. Gimping your way to 75 is no way to give those grouping with you the choir of partying with you.

-Not breaking 600 mp as a whm post 60 unless a galka? Ya I just this yesterday, and he was hume too, pathetic leech onto the party, no earrings, no rings, very little mp gear. Although everyone knows galka whms are the best, players they make the effort, unlike zaus 590 mp 61 hume whm, /clap.

-Melee rdms that get so caught up in it they forget to cast, another aspiring example I saw yesterday also in my party in the tree at 62-64! Lacking certain RDM AF, but instead of getting mp+ gear instead got attk gear, also missing obvious inexpensive equipment, and had to be reminded to cast dispel ever time because she was 'meleeing'.

I'd like to point out some of these underequiped and some foodless idiots also got aggro and got themselves killed more than once, big surprise

Agreed, although I'd rather a whm put the gil toward staves and useful equipment. When tanking as ninja though arounding mobs with slow, erase is a god send.

I believe sneaky said, not conforming to the needs of a group, I very much agree with this. If the group has reasonable requests for the better of the group, it needs to be done or discussed in a calm matter. Examples would include who's pulling, using a weaker WS for the stake of a great SC+MB, Not being a melee mage against certain mobs if requested, positioning, and so on.

With gear it's not a matter of having to be the elite player, but when the group is only getting chain 1-3 ( and assuming the mobs are reasonable for your levels ) and your gear has very noticable amounts of room for improvement, yes you're a great cause for the group not reaching a higher goal. This means you not getting snipers by X level, not getting dark staff, not getting ice staff, not getting your needed AF tanking gear and so on is a great cause of the group playing subpar, and you have no one to blame but yourself for not seeing 4-8k xp per hour parties.

Well, while I agree with Tyrath only slightly. Dark Knight's don't need a Dark Staff, but there are some instances where having one is quite nifty. I got one a little while ago for the heck of it. I was tired of having to wait for my mp gauge to slowly fill whenever I rested.

Now, in a good exp party, my dark staff is very rarely put to use. The only instance I do bring it out is when im low/empty on mp, and my tp is under 20% after a fight. I really dont have that big a problem getting my TP back up to that 20%+ mark.. I mean, that's just two hits.

The only other reason I might break it out, is if the Rdm just isn't sending many or any refreshes my way simply because im a Drk. I need my mp for my absorb spells, and I will get it one way or another. If the rdm is just plain sucking at refreshing me, or non existant in refreshing me im gonna rest with my staff out anytime I've got lower that 40-50% tp. They can deal with my slightly off tp gain, or learn to send me a refresh every so often. (only a minor flame towards those bad rdms you run into every now and then)

As Tryath did point out, it can be used when soloing. (camping, farming, kill stuff quests, or whatever) It's extremely beneficial if there aren't any mobs around that are drain/aspir-able. I use mine a most often when im helping others with something. But when im soloing it gets the most use and has proven a good investment.
