So yea... Was talking to my sister in England on MSN and told her I had to go get some milk, so I turned my laptop off. Came back and decided to play some FFXI (a few hours later), turned it back on and *fizzle* there goes my monitor. I freak out (understandably) and call Dell. Apparently, because my laptop was "in working condition" when it left the warehouse, they are saying that my warrenty doesnt cover it. Now the screen seems to have streaks and cracks in it, it is also a funny black and grey colour (blotchy). I'm guessing maybe a short fuse of some kind. Why have a warranty if it is only good while it is in the store?

Now I have this expensive, totally useless laptop and I am left without a way to fix it (unless I want to pay for a whole new monitor).

Dell... take your "warranty" and stuff it up your ass.

They seem to not understand what the fuck a warrenty means.. call them back you probably got someone who was fired and on their last day of work people don't buy warrentys to make sure it comes out of the warehouse alright.

You got a dell you where asking for it sorry. A comptuer made by a comptuer is not good.

Phone them all if they do fuck all go get a new screen and put it onto the laptop done it with my notebook once worked a treat. (though i know what i was doing lol)

Call back, get another person, ask to speak to a supervisor if you have to. If the situation is EXACTLY as you describe it, and you're not conveniently leaving some key bit of information out, the warranty very much covers something like this.

The word of one customer service representative is not law. If you catch someone in their first week, that 2 - 4 week training course they give new hires isn't exactly enough to make them precisely on-the-ball. It's understandable, and there's not really a better way, so there's no point in getting mad at about it ... but it does mean one does have to suffer a sort of gamble whenever you call ANYWHERE.

So, yes. Just try again. You got a newb, or someone who just plain didn't understand what you were saying. If by some miracle, you get the same song and dance again, ask them to explain exactly WHY something so ridiculous wouldn't be covered under warranty. "Because it was working when it was shipped" is NOT a sufficient reason, and even they know that ... it would mean that the only things they'd bother helping you with are things that were wrong with it when they DID ship it out, which would in turn mean that they're just okey-dokey with shipping stuff out that they know perfectly well to be broken.

The person you spoke with was new, terrified, and was pulling stuff out of his/her ass.

I think I got an "Oh, it's a woman on the other end, I'll tell her it's her fault" asshole. I know computers and no I wasn't asking for it because I got a freaking extended warranty.

I dunno, Dell is just plain assholes. About a year back, my computer crashed. Kaputz. Windows wouldnt load. My computer would start up normally, all, "DELL" and such, then when it would go to load windows XP, I'd get the Blue Screen of Death, saying

"A fatal error occured while loading windows. Windows must be shut down. Error 101045729781745bunchoffuckingnumbers"

So I say 'wtfwtfwtf' and call up Dell. I tell them, in the package they sent me, they didnt send me a Windows XP disc. They told me there was a reinstall disc, which I tried to use but it wouldnt load either. I was gonna fdisc the mofo and just reinstall windows from the getgo. I asked if they could send me a copy of my original install disc for XP because I didnt get one. They told me that they couldnt do that, and my warranty had expired that month so there was nothing they could do for me. Lacking the funds to shell out the hundred bucks for a new XP, I partitioned my HD and installed the Reinstall version of windows on the partition.

Moral of the story is, fuck Dell. Theyre out to get you, their customer service is deplorable. I say all us Dell haters get together and firebomb their company. Can I get an amen.

Thank God for my PS2 ._.;

Well time to leave work and the computer I have here >.<;

This is not what I expected to hear. I've had to call in several dozen repair/replacements to Dell through work, and we purchase extended warranty on everything. The worst they've made me do is hang up, try some shit, and call back... beyond that it's been either replaced in 1-2 days or repaired in 2.

I've never seen a warranty upheld so well.

Dude, you're gettin' a Dell...

Sorry that made no sense.

Back on topic, I have a dell, and hate it mostly because I've tried every compatable ram possible with it and none of them work. I even broke down and took it to get professionally installed.. and they couldn't do it.

So I have to play WoW (min. 512MB) with 512MB, which is terrible.

Yay for dell.

I was actually thinking about getting a Dell laptop around Christmas time but if they're all asshats, screw that.

Mire, stop punching walls and go get some ice for your wrist. Hopefully they'll stop screwing around and get your laptop fixed, good luck. ^^

I've really got to back that up with my own experience, as well ... my little brother has had no less than two laptops fully replaced, and one of them was for an instance that was clearly his fault ... it got covered in soapy water (kind of a long story). As long as you patiently answer all of their questions so that they can make sure that you're the owner of the thing, they'll replace it for you.

Treat the person that handles your call with respect, but if they honestly tell you that your laptop just fizzling out isn't covered under warranty, (nicely AND politely) ask for a supervisor. It just isn't true. Whatever you do, don't act like self-entitled asshat. That's not the way to get the help you need, no matter how much you want to.

I have to third (?) this. I've had nothing but good come from Dell regarding stuff like this. The laptop we bought from them. for my sister, essentially died. (Which was most likely her fault..) Called Dell about it, sent them the silly thing and they fixed it good as new. Haven't had a problem with it since. (This happened about a year ago.)

Alot of companies with premade computers custom-design their RAM slots to prevent upgrading, which forces you to buy a new computer altogether. It's a big reason why alot of people don't recommend buying prebuilt, especially since alot of the time the hardware/software are only worth about 60% the price tag to begin with.

well... i work in warranty and... technically i work for the company that handles the warranty work for dell. (not jokeing altho i work on the cingular warranty project). I personally dont own a dell cause i build my own computers but all i can say is to be nice and dont yell at the people. I know i go outta my way to find reasons to say no if someone gets pissy really quickly and for no good reason. Whoever said to ask for a sup is prolly right but dont do it right away and try to talk with the guy for a while before u ask for a sup. Truthfully if their bonus structure is the same as mine (on the cingular project) then about half their check comes from their Quality assurance and average handle time. Meaning ... long calls are bad for them if u wanna make them more willing to bend keep them on the phone longer.

Btw anyone w/ a cingular phone... please just deal w/ ur broken phone and leave me alone... im averaging 50 calls a day right now... u guys gotta stop breakin ur shit.

and incase ur wondering heres the company that does dell's tech work

Same thing here. I bought a Dell because i have a big corporate discount from work, and because I was too lazy to build aonther one. I have tried everything to put more ram into it. I filed down some ram, to make it fit, but no such luck so far. They tease you with those extra slots.

Warranty side, when I first got mine, it didn't work. I was all excited, and when I plugged everything in, nothing happened. I called customer service and this is what I got:

"Are you sure your power isn't out."

/sigh. After several minutes of politely explaining that I did, in fact, have power, (I swear I could feel myself start to turn into the Hulk) I finally got a supervisor who let me send my shitbox back in for a new one. Keep trying, there is probably one person there who likes helping people.
