determining the mob level?

Any way to determine the actual numerical mob level? Preferably before engaging it.

You can't before engaging it. Exact level can only be determined by the xp gotten.

Lie. There's a program for PC that determines the level by the check - all status on you. If you're naked, the check then is the accurate level check, so it takes off what it would be with gear on, therefore determining the level.

Dunno where to get it though.

That would be considered cheating.

Yeah I was thinking legit ways.

Not being able to determine the mob level before engaging is what I consider a design flaw (since it is obviously not a bug but a "feature"). Keeping this informaton secret is just one more way SE tries to slow players down.

Now that I have spend some time in the game again I rememer what I didn't like about it in the first place. Delays when crafting, delays when accessing the delivery box. Stores that are closed so that the player has to wait around for the store to open, etc. etc. Not being able to see the mobs level is just one of those little things.

If this is someone's first MMO, then they don't know any different, and find nothing wrong with the way things are. To me all those little things add up to being quite annoying, because such built-in delays are simply not present in most other MMOs I have ever played.

Be fair, you would not really know the mobs lvl, think abou RL, you do not see a number floating above a dog or some guy at the bar.

adds a nice sence of realism.

Considering were playing a game where people can cast giant flames/shocks of lightning/Huge ice glaciers/etc, realism is pretty much out the window

Thats called magic! \o/

But I think it is interesting the way it is done myself, and I have played SWG and WoW, they both suck in comparison to this.

Just out of curiosity, how does knowing the mobs level in WoW suck in comparison to not knowing the mobs level in FFXI?

I wonder whether additional information in the check reply gives the level away. Like "decent challenge" is -2 level, and "decent challenge, high defense" is -1 level, or some such.

You could be all like...

'Impossible to guage'

So you could eb all like 'I don't want to die! I am not going to fight that' and be on the safe side, or charge at it and have a piss easy fight, it is just making the sink or swim decision on weather to charge its' ass or not and see if you CAN take it.

(And to be fair, I jus din't like WoW. Gamewise, nice, graphicswise, ugh, community wise... super UGH)

Well, the check is giving you a basic idea with "easy, decent challenge, even, tough, etc" already. I assume players make their decisions whether or not to engage based on that. Which is why it's hard for me to understand why SE wouldn't provide the actual levels.

One could argue that they don't want to show the levels to keep the game "in character", but somehow the player levels, the numerical damage values per attack, etc, don't exactly keep things "in character", so why deprive the players of mob info. Just rambling in any case.

Well I always though that knowing the "exact" lvl of a mob really didnt matter. If you are pulling you only really need to know "about" what lvl it is. If its IT++ you probably dont want to bring it back to your camp cause you can get trounced. If its just Tough or Even dont even bother pulling it cause you wont get any XP from it. Or is this more from a soloing standpoint? If it is then thats a whole other situation altogether.

I think the reason that they didnt give you exact numbers is cause its supposed to be the player gauging it from what he/she sences from the mob. What I never understood is how later on a "bunny" can con IT++ to lvl 65+ characters. We need to have more to fight other then "Dire Bunny" and "Wicked Crab" it shows a lack of imagination imo.

Hmmm, prolly the same reason enemy HP and MP are not revealed too?

I think that NPCs may have simelar stats to players, asin layout wise, STR, CHR, ect ect, thus the diferances in this make it too diverse to really pin any kind of numerical level to them?

Wrong. It can still be inaccurate. Mob Evasion checks are dependant on Accuracy, which majority of your accuracy comes from your weapon skill level. If you're using something uncapped, this will provide incorrect results.

Mob DEF, is also based off your attack, which, again, majority comes from Weapon skill level.

As a melee, this won't be too problematic. However, as a mage, most likely, it will.

Merits in your preferred combat stat will also result in lower evasion and lower defense checks on mobs that are actually higher level.

Honestly though, if you want to look at the lvls of mobs and such, just look at a guide. That's what guides are made for. It wouldn't be as much fun if you didn't experiment on your own about the mob to find out its lvl, weakness, etc., then what kind of player would you really be if you never found out anything on your own?

I think my point is that no matter what you do, you simply can not find out what level the mob is until after the fact. It doesn't matter how much time you spend experimenting. As far as I know there is no guide that will let you determine the level of the mob you are looking at.

The "what kind of player would you be" really doesn't follow. Everyone has different needs and a different outlook on what is fun and what isn't. There is no way you can bunch all the players together.

My question was originally geared toward soloing. Depending on player level one gets between 20xp and 47xp for "easy" mobs. The impact of knowing the exact mob level should be pretty apparent.

Of course the 20xp mobs will all be around the same area, and if some is consistently getting 20xp then it is time to move on, but still, even if it is between 36xp and 47xp per kill it would still be nice to know ahead of time.

Naturally one will have to look into whether it is worth to run around and look for 47xp mobs instead of just chain killing whatever targets are available.

Figuring that sort of stuff out is fun to me, what can I say, I like numbers. ;)

other thing didnt like about this game was there no real faction checks so you never know if the mob would be aggrsive or passive, most rpg have that as well. san where are you^^
