dev team interveiw (6/19/08)

There's some interesting technical information about the game, but nothing really cool. They did explain why they're not doing some things, but not as much about what is coming.

1UP: The Summoners want to know when you guys are going to start revealing more stuff about updates to Summoners. And will Astral Flow ever be better than the Level 70 blood pacts at higher levels? Basically Astral Flow isn't as good as some of the level 70 blood pacts that some summons have, like with Leviathan's Spinning Dive.

MG: First of all, as for new avatars, new summons, we can't say much yet. But we can say that there will be new summons, and yes, I said that in the plural. As for these new type of avatars that will be released. They will be a little bit different from the ones that already exist. They won't be as ability-based, or ability heavy. For example, the ones that we have now, they have like six or seven abilities per avatar. The new ones won't have as many.

As for why Astral Flow isn't as powerful as some of the Level 70 blood pacts, it's that Astral Flow is area-of-effect. It doesn't matter how many monsters are in the area, it'll be the same damage to the monsters in the effect range. Whereas the level 70 blood pacts are just for one target, so that's where the difference comes in.

Thats funney I didnt know that, that could be a good way to take out a bunch of mobs at once in Einherjar if you have enough smn's to AF.

that.. would actually be fun

As for the new areas, there are some areas that we still haven't opened that will become available in the future. We're not saying that it's Giddeus, specifically, but more areas will open.

Yay, Xarcabard here we go!

Almost any SMN could tell you the 2h ability does consistent damage regardless of how many mobs there are. What has bugged most of us (and this is where SE totally strikes out) is the fact that any mob you'd fight past the L70ish range will resist SMN 2h very damn close to 100% of the time. Even with m.acc merits, SMN 2h's resist rate is simply appalling. Unless the mob has zero magic resist and is weak to the element you're using, you can pretty much forget about breaking 300 AOE with it.

Also, we're thinking of making a new type of place where people can level or a type of enemy or a battlefield, where you don't need a tank to level. Maybe instead of adjusting the jobs, we could be adjusting of the monsters, so you wouldn't necessarily need that type of tank to level.
My interest is piqued.

Ouch never knew smn got the shaft so bad, but then again I guess thats the reason you never see smn use 2hr nearly as much 70+.

But then again if you can get the conditions in you favor like have a sch use weather affects on you and use obi's+ other gear wonder if it would help at all...

Still saying multiple summons, lol. But when?!

QFT! i only use Astral Flow to save MP when using my lvl 70 BP's.

So they think Paladins are more powerful than a Ninja? Geez. In any case where I'm up against a ninja for hate control, I stop trying, period. Maybe for a minute or two I can hold it off them, but past that? Not a chance. I no longer even try. Actually, in nearly every case, unless I have been designated the "tank", I don't try anymore. The ninja is a much more accepted and significantly more popular tank, and unless SE makes some significant changes to the way a pld takes damage (how bout changing the def and vit calcs so they don't suck?), we'll never see much use outside Sky and Dynamis.
Way to fail SE.

Don't get me wrong through, I appreciate the changes SE has made to pld over the past updates, but until a pld can hold their ownside along a ninja, we will never see the same use. And I hate that, cause I do enjoy playing pld. A taru pld is fucking adorable, and I love being adorable. (granted, a taru is adorable at pretty much anything, but still)

whoa, what?

it's like you flipped the thing around. comparatively, a pld/nin vs a nin/drk, or pld/rdm vs nin/drk, the pld has more enmity in gear and abilities to cap hate quicker, and keep it longer.

they're really both just about the same. pld/war vs nin/war or pld/nin vs nin/war, the nin has NO chance of keeping up with the pld at all, under any circumstance.

I'm prolly just feeling moody. I'm at work, bored, tired and might have taken that the wrong way.

I took it as this. SE says they view pld > nin. I don't. There are things where I do better at than a nin, but those are few and far between now. And I am tired of it.

So, enlighten me, really. I acknowledge there are ppl here with more experience and knowledge about this subject than I. Share it, and I *will* listen.

My NIN/DRK has no trouble getting hate off PLD/NINs.

I might have phrased my post incorrectly. NIN/DRK in a tanking situation is just as good as a pld/nin, and definitely better than a pld/war unless they have aegis.

What I was trying to get across is, saying that NIN is situationally better in every part of the game than a PLD is incorrect, and if you look at the tanks in most of the high end LS in the game, you'll see a very different scene.

1UP: Following up on the real-world equivalents of the King Behemoths and all that: Why are the drop rates on rare/ex items from long delay pops like 18-24 hour mobs so cruel?

MI: Let's take for example: Fafnir. When Fafnir was first released, when it first appeared in the game, the items and the equipment that he would drop were, at the time, some of the best equipment in the game. Over the past few years, there have been new NMs released, with new drops and equipment. So maybe in comparison, Fafnir, or other what older NMs would drop, is not as appealing, or not even as good. Well, they're still good, just not as good as some of the other things you can get right now. And since that's the case, the drop rates for Fafnir haven't been adjusted. But that's not saying that we won't adjust them in the future. But right now we're concentrating more on releasing new NMs and new items, to give the player more things to concentrate on rather than just some of the old items. For example, the latest patch, there are going to be many new NMs released around the game world. And they'll be dropping many new, even better items. For now, we want the players to concentrate on these items. But that's not to say that we're never going to go back and adjust those times, because we do realize that with some of the older items, that maybe the drop rates do need to be adjusted.

Haha what? ... Ridill

...

Side note: I also hate the fact that this guy doing the interview doesn't play as much (lately, as admitted in the interview), makes me wonder what right he has to ask these questions.

Random nitpick:

1UP: Some of those campaigns are really tough, especially when you get the orcs in there spamming AOE attacks. It's easy to wipe in instances like this. What can you tell us about the forthcoming Bahlran's weapons? How difficult will they be to obtain compared to the existing relic weapons?

This question makes no sense. "Campaign! Yeh! So these new relics ...?"

It's not tough at all. Learn to walk out of range or play a bit more smarter by NOT jumping into the orgy of mobs/players =p. Or stop going as a level 25 WHM. (assumption).
