you know what, i dont want to hear it, sabia.

I have been in the dunes for about three weeks now off and on trying to level my thief.

Half of those new players dont WANT advice on what to do. I have had talks with people about curing, voking, what makes a good party, etc, and 75% of the time I get flamed because "oh you know everything about the game don't you just shut up and let me play".

Also, 90% of the people in the dunes have been there bfore. Half of them are leveling other +30 jobs like SMN and Ninja and DRK. As soon as I try to offer advice to any of them, I get flamed as well. Shut up, they have been here before, they know what they're doing is the most common reply. The result is usually death or a party disbanding because someone leaves or a fight breaks out over a death.

I got flamed by almost an entire party last night because I asked the Ninja (level 14) why he didn't have Utsusemi yet. The WHM threatened to not cure me if I didn't get off his back (which was more of me asking why he wouldn't just take the time to go get the scroll because it effects the entire party not just him when he is trying to tank.) I believe I was pretty nice about the whole thing. When I suggested to the BLM (who was rank 8) that he use more nuking spells than enfeebling on the crabs because of their defense down jawn, I am hit again from the rest of the party to let them play their jobs teh way they want etc. The BLM simply did not know because he had played PLD up to 71 and took the advice, but again the WHM tells me to shut up.

My point is, people can be assholes about noobs in that area, but those people dont CARE half the time and don't want to hear it. I myself will never get sick of dunes flames because the stories are usually pretty funny, but I think its pretty screwy to think that everyone there is willing to learn and quits the game becausse of people being high and mighty. The truth is its rounded out on both sides, higher lvl people are sick of asshattery, and lower level people are sick of l337 ness.

Panda the thing is I've never met a NEW player not willing to take advice. The only problem you should be having with jackasses in the dunes are from people who allready have high level jobs (the ninja you mentioned). Chances are these people are idiots on their main job as well and take advice the same way....I mean that Ninja knows he's supposed to have ichi but he's just being lazy. Of course he's going to be an asshole...did you expect something different?

I've never met a player w/o a subjob that wasn't willing to take the advice of someone who has been playing the game for a long time. It drives me nuts that you guys come at them with claws extended and just tear any hopes they had of this game being fun to shreds. I spend A LOT of time in the dunes, just hours sitting there killing Gobbo trains, raising people and helping with subjob items. The place absolutely facinates me because I love all these new players who are just having fun.

My first run though the dunes was as a RDM with a party of 4 from my LS and we thought we were the cat's ass with our tanking theif, getting 70 XP a kill. We didnt' know what a "camp" was and completely sucked. But it was fun. Everyone's new at one point. 8)

Sabia, I have.. =oP

Nah, see, it was the WHM who was flaming me while I was speaking to the Ninja and the Black Mage. The WHM was the new player without a sub job. I didn't expect much from the Ninja, but I didn't expect the WHM to tell me to STFU. Thats my whole point.

The WHM said, hey, we were all noobs at one time. I said, yeah, but there is a difference between not knowing how to play and just being a dickhead about how to play. The WHM obviously thought I was trying to be a dick, while, to tell you the truth, I was being the nicest I feel I might have ever been in the dunes before.

I also really don't think there is much of a difference between people without a subjob and people with subjobs who are only leveling their second job. Granted, those people have been through a party situation before, but half of them probably haven't been to qufim, and the other half probably haven't played with half the other jobs in the game. Do you see what I'm saying?

I agree with you that there are people who come in and freak out at people for not knowing how to play when they just started the game, but I don't think its fair to rule out the entire area as being old hat in this situation, or blame either side of the spectrum, because the fault can lie in either camp.

Thing I find that helps it to be "passive-helpful" about asking crap like that, especially in the places like dunes. If there's a NIN without Utsusemi, rather than ask why they don't have it, just ask them if they need help finding a place to farm Norg-fame stuff to get it.
....Or the such. Seems to work, even if it's butt-kissy.

i posted a reply. it is now missing.

but uh, i have lost interest. ^_^

This is a couple days old, but I guess I wanted to throw my opinion in before the next "Dunes Suck" topic comes up.

Yes, the dunes can be a bitch. Gobs everywhere, tons of newbies, it's a level whore's hell, and still pretty damn bad for the rest of us. In addition, the fact that people don't know their jobs, or seemingly basic things such as SCing can be annoying.

But the truth is, most people don't know what the hell they're doing. And that includes all of the higher levels as well. While I'm not the highest level ever, I've been through the dunes a couple of times. And for anyone leveling a low level job, this is probably their first organized party experience. Even a level 75 BLM won't know how to tank properly, and a level 75 WAR could nuke too much in the beginning of a battle when leveling BLM. The dunes is the learning stage, where everyone figures out and adapts to their place in a party. It's inevitable that it's going to suck.

But it goes much easier if you don't think of it as a place to get out of. The dunes are a place where you learn your job as well. While some jobs have some things in common, each has it's own unique abilities and stats. And while you're there, see if you can't teach a few people about things you know about. If you've played a ways through a job that someone in your party is having trouble with, ask if they want advice. I spent some time last night teaching a bunch of newbies to SC, and I had fun. It's cool when they figure it out and you're like, "Wow, I helped them do that."

While I, despite to occasional rude joke, always wear my mentor flag in the dunes, I try to learn as well as teach. Even newbies might be able to share some insight you're unaware of.
