Do Mind Altering Drugs Make You Cool?

hehe, you want a real drug? Get Ziconotide, 1000 times more powerful than Morphine!

Spoiler:
if you are really this stupid, than read this and DON'T REALLY GET IT XD

Yes.

Yes they do.

One day I'll be cool too.

Anyone care to explain how destroying brain cells makes you smarter?

That's just self-expression. It's the exact same thing as wearing a Halo shirt and talking about how much you like it and can't wait to get home and play. For alot of potheads, pot is something they really love, it's something they're interested in and want to know alot about. It's like a hobby, the same as video games or music or football.

I guess I never looked at it quite that way. I always read these as signs of someone who is an attention whore, showing everyone "OH HAI- I SMOK 2 HEL YEA!"

But only having smoked it once, and not finding it at all interesting, I guess I can't speak for a group of people I have not shared any experiences with. But from an outsiders view, it seems very worn out and old for smokers to just up and accept other smokers as being cool, just because they get high too.

If that is even the least bit true, I'd be more worried about the general level of intelligence of the American people, rather then the negative effect of drugs. Personally I think you' don't understand our arguments.

Personally I think you overestimate the level of intelligence of the average American.

Anyone care to explain how destroying brain cells makes you smarter?

They give you new insights you might have never realized otherwise. Did you not read my first post? I guess it's just too complicated for the sober person to understand.

I've met some people that talk about pot like it makes them awesome and they want the whole world to know, and yeah I agree, those are people are annoying, but I wouldn't say that's the majority. I'd say the people that you'll find most often doing that sort of things are the wiggers, the retarded white kids that try to be black and that think smoking pot makes them blacker. I fucking hate wiggers so much...

I wouldn't say I immediately label a smoker I just met as cool just because they smoke, but I'm more likely to give them a chance than a non-smoker. If I meet a non-smoker I'm quicker to judge them as lame when they do/say something stupid than I am a smoker. You see what I'm tryin to say?

I fail to see the difference. That however is only one aspect of "smarter".

While it is more likely, that's not entirely what I'm talking about. I've known plenty of right-wing Christian conservatives, my parents are two of the biggest I know. I've talked to and listened to many of their friends, and I can honestly say that I've never met one as smart as some of my drug friends. Let me clarify one more time by saying that I'm not saying they aren't out there(a sober smart person), I'm just saying they're much fewer. The ratio is just in favor of someone who does do drugs.

Of your environment or on a national or a global scale?

If it's a environmental one as in community maybe that's the case, but if the other two latter then I'd doubt it, proof please.

I suppose if you dispose of something valuable, you are forced to make do with what you have...but does that mean if you had that which was better for you in general in the first place that you'd do better without throwing it away?

"You always appreciate something when it's gone"

So you need to kill brain cells in order to become smarter with the leftovers?

Diminishing point of return, from the outside looking in. I have plenty of friends that do drugs or were ex druggies, sure they are wise in those respects because they learned that either they found their peace at life with what philosophy they enjoyed or they learned from their mistakes and pushed forward with the experiences learned from the drug life to become a stronger person.

A person at peace yes is more capable of learning that does not mean however that they can potentially become smarter than the person who potentially has no drug use. The sober person could also be at peace without drugs and learn at a faster rate than the person who did them. Over here, speaking environmentally, it shows that those who didn't do drugs were as or more intelligent than those who did them.

Hell, my best friend who gotten over his addiction of coke and illegal narcotics taught me one of the most important lessons of life before he left for the airforce with his new wife. He's the same age as me, but I confident that he'll do well in the military and the new relationship, because he has those experiences with him that gave him street smarts. That's not to say that I cannot match his own wisdom, but if we were on par with street smarts I think it would be obvious that the drugs take their toll on the body and mind as well as mentality.

There's only one aspect of 'smart'? Smart is an trite and overused expression, do you mean wisdom or intelligence? Either category has many varying degrees of proficiency.

or do you mean it by honesty= smart? How do you define smart?

Kids that think drugs make you cool/smart/think out of the box/etc should stop and listen to the other side as well. (Yeah, some do. But it seems like the majority, or at least the most vocal ones tend to dismiss opposing arguments too quickly.) Most parents today grew up in the 60's and 70's, when pot was extremely widespread. If they warn you about the dangers of it, it's probably based on at least some personal experience.

Hey, lets stop and take a look at the people I used to smoke up with! It's been four years now, I'm sure they're doing swell!

Dead

Dead
Dead
Divorced and two miscarriages at the ripe old age of 21.
Arrested and thrown in jail. Now because of the marks on his record, it's tough for him to get any decent job.
Cleaned up and joined the navy
Cleaned up and joined the air force
Dropped out of school
Cleaned himself up after a few years and went to college

Man, what a bunch of winners. Hey, notice how the ones that went on to do something with their lives also quit smoking? What an odd correlation! Not to mention two of my friends that never used drugs or alcohol now have steady government jobs and are financially stable. Wow, I wonder what happened there!

Am I saying wake and bake kills? No. But do I think it's going to lead you down the path of success? Hell no.

I find this conversation, full of generalizations and stereotypes used as evidence, to be slightly disconcerting. Excim and Realia seem to be among few that have considered both sides.

So, I'll share a story in reply to Excalibur. (background information)
I like to think I am smart. I know my friends are. A person surrounds their self with friends similar in many aspects to their self, right? Eh, guess thats the modest method of beating around the bushes. I am an intelligent American that loves to discuss politics, global warming, techno babble, and future technology such as Fusion energy and Quantum Computing. I am a geek - gogo me!

What does this point out? Simply an exception to an invalid correlation between pot smoking and intelligence. It may indicate a certain 'open mindedness' to you Excalibur, so let me digress once more.

The Valedictorian at my High School was an Honors student, with the same AP courses as myself, who graduated HS with a 4.0 GPA. I had a 3.76 GPA. She turned out to be an alcoholic, and I was not. Therefore, I shall conclude Alcohol, too, will make you smarter. I am not mocking your anology, but I am hoping to point out the fallacy.

Another girl that took the same AP courses as myself, is a fucking pot head. She did AP Calc, AP English, and AP History baked. She is an intelligent person that I would love to see have the right to smoke pot because she knows the difference between being impaired or in full control of her faculties. I have no problem with people smoking pot so long as they realize its effects have empirically proven effects on reaction speeds. So what does this mean? First, I just want to point out the phrase 'empirically proven.' I may not trust the government to say it is bad, but when verifiable sources prove Marijuana's effects, I won't argue the case against that evidence. Second, I think this shows I am open minded in my belief that people should be able to do what they want, so long as it is only harmful to their own self.

Then, in an [(edit: almost)] final remark, I had the "benefit" of going to highschool at a Tennessee public school. Every school has their class clowns, but Tennessee has its share of class rednecks. Those pot users are stupid. They are not open minded, they are not intelligent, and likely pot serves as a gateway drug to Meth. By your argument, they should be respectable, knowledgeable, tolerant people. You should be able to carry on polite conversations regarding gay marriage, gun control laws, and abortion.

And forgive me, because this does come across as mocking the idea. The day you can have that conversation with the latter group, without discrimination against gays, a reasonable, logically based, DEBATE on gun control laws, and thoughts that comprehend the full responsibilities and scope of an abortion, not just what was told to them or read in the bible -- then, I will be more apt to believe that pot makes you a more tolerant, intelligent person.

Final Assertion:
You may be attempting to make the generalization that people inclined to start smoking are already intelligent/tolerant people. In which case, I would also say there is some fault to be found. I have a few friends that smoke pot currently, that are very tolerant intelligent people. I will only believe that boost to intelligence/tolerance is because of the pot if science yields results to that effect. In which case, I will be the number one proponent of jacking up the country's rednecks on so much pot they'll have permanent red eye -- not just what you see in a photograph.

EDIT: And oh yea... I don't smoke pot, but if you did read this full post, I hope I came across open minded.

There's always the "its illegal, I'm cool if I do it" complex. Just another trend for the cattle to follow in their search for self-importance.

The 'white hat' smokers, the ones who don't advertise their law-breaking status at every opportunity... those people are the ones who (usually) are a better representation of the more sensible smokers. That category still varies greatly; some do it for fun, some do it for relief, some do it just because.

There are dumbasses and there are brain surgeons in all categories of life. Potheads are no different. Replace "mind altering drugs" in the title with "frilly clothing", "handguns", or "home-made pancake recipes" as you please.

Speaking of which, I met a very old classmate of mine from the 8th/9th grade on the buss about 2 weeks ago, and we got talking a bit. I asked him what he do now.

Well, back then, he smoke pot frequently, and often ate magical mushrooms. He failed pretty much every subject, and had to redo 9th grade 2 times before he finally managed to pass the subjects. At that point, he had taken a serious look at his life and where it were heading, and decided to stop. When he stopped, he passed every subject with a B or an A. And he was not the type that talked about pot or other drugs. He was the type that did it with his friends in secret.

2 good replies in the time it took to type that, gogo Khidir and Cal!

I approve. In fact....

Don't get me wrong Arc, I've considered both sides. I just think my side is greener. Hell, I've tried drugs myself, because I can't honestly say its stupid to take drugs if I haven't tried myself.

And I have friends that are very interested in drugs as well, which has read up about every drug in existance, simply because its a hobby for them. They're the ones I've tried drugs with. They were smart, intelligent people before they started smoking etc. And they're smart, intelligent people after. I won't go as far as to say smoking pot will ruin your brain. I said myself that marijuana itself isn't that bad. But like alcohol, overuse of it can damage you, and can also lead to other accidents, similar to drunk driving. With responsible use, it does no real harm to you.

However, it does, in no way, actually increase your intelligence. Quite the opposite. Abuse of ANY drug, including alcohol, causes damage to your brain and body.

Uzor, I hope you didn't misinterpret my post, because in no way was I defending Excalibur's notion that it does in fact increase you intelligence.

George Bush took drugs when he was younger(and could be still taking them for all we know). Care to explain how George Bush is an intellectual?
Care to lookup some porn on the internet featuring a drunken/high girl having an orgy with every guy in sight without a condom? Care to let us know exactly how possibly becoming pregnant, getting stds, and the possible humiliation(depending on personality) of seeing yourself giving out blowjobs for fun in public for your family/friends to see is an intelligent decision?
Anything that makes you do something you completely regret and think is stupid when it wears off is NOT making you smarter and the same applies if anyone looking at you while you are in that state can mistake you for being mentally retarded.
I wont look down on people(eg . you) for being a complete pothead until they do something stupid or asinine so stop acting like you're superior to anyone who doesn't smoke at least 5 spliffs a day.
You're exactly the kinda person detailed in the OP. You believe in your innate superiority over all people capable of walking in a straight line while singing their ABC's. Guess what? It doesn't make you smarter. It just makes you a person who just happens to take drugs.

I have done my fair share of experimentation right after high school and never thought I would be cool for it, nor was it something I was hoping to achieve. My experiences gave me a different looking glass to observe through at the time of intoxication and may sometimes carry over into being sober. A person that does mind-altering drugs just to be cool is doing it for the wrong reasons. Drugs is an experience that some view as acceptable, where as, others may not. To each, their own.

Sticking mainly to the thread title, do shrooms before acid, hell don't even do acid for that matter. I have never looked down into that chasm of insanity like the way I was on acid, never again.

"Cigarettes killed my father, and raped my mother."

Yeah the first time I ever got really good acid, it took my head and fucked it sideways.

Have yet to touch it since.

I've done my fair share of experimentation, but I lead a pretty well off life, so i think i'm entitled to do whatever i please with my body as long as it doesn't harm others while i'm doing well.

Oh, and just for the record, I've never taken any drugs before nor do I ever have any desire to. The worst intoxicant I take is alcohol and once and a while a cigarette (though I do breath in a LOT of second hand smoke, doesn't make me too happy though >_< ) and I have never wanted to take any other intoxicant.
