Do you think it's possible?

Ok my new PC rig is 3.6 ghz sli pc with 2 7800GTX and a raptor 10,000 rpm HDD.

Now do you think it's possible to play on 2 accounts on my PC if I hook up 2 monitors and keyboards and use a windower? Or would I have to run it with the hard drive partitioned and blah, blah, blah...

He said 2 accounts. The limitations would be strictly hardware related.

I'd say, with slightly tuned down settings (I'm thinking sound + Perhaps some slight graphics adjustments) you could easily run 2 instances of FFXI in not so laggy areas (I'd hate to know what both accounts in Lower Jeuno is for anyone not on 1meg+ ADSL is like...).

Your main problem would be actually running two instances, as far as I know SE has prohibited running two of it's programs at once (apart from PoL).

Good luck trawling the millions of dodgy JP sites using babelfish :)

Blabj

PS: NICE RIG!

Edit: I didn't see the two accounts part.

Windower has been able to let you run two FFXIs at once. You'd need only one keyboard/pad too, since all you'd have to do is click on the FFXI you'd want to play.

Two keyboards though? I could be wrong, but i'm thinking you'd like to have a good place to play together with someone.

You'd only need one FFXI, set up via POL to have access to two accounts (Windower allows two POLs on at once too). You won't have to do anything fancy besides have the fancy computer.

Well I don't think that FFXI would task the hardware too much. :) At lease it better not cause this game is 2 years old and games like BF2 get a sustained FPS of 90 and above for one of the cards I bought on max settings, and I have 2. Also I'll probably be upgradeing to 768up/6meg down line at the end of the year. I just was wondering if anyone knew of a special program I might need to make SE think it's on two PCs.

FFXI is a PS2 port. As such, it's not quite as heavy on the video card, and it's pretty processor intensive.

Wow. my geeky side is showing ; ;

SE has no detection to make it care if it's on one computer or not. POL is designed to run only once, Windower breaks that and makes more than one sessionavailable.

If SE fixed it, they'd get a lot of angry calls due to NAT firewalls and people using it on two legetimate computers. (NAT makes a network look like one computer, and is common in many routers.)

you only need one KB. a kb is only an input device to the computer.

I just purchased one of those Logitech G15 keyboards with the LCD display, and I have running the CPU/RAM monitor...

I was shocked to see how often my processor pegs out at 100% (basically any time there are more then 5-6 people on screen)

I always assumed it was network bandwith that caused the Jeuno lag, but alas its my CPU ;; (Athlon64 3200)

As for running two instances at once... its may be possible with your new rig... for the most part, but places like Jeuno may still be too much to handle.

I have a decent computer with a really crappy video card lol

jeuno lag is only as slow as loading the characters for me

So you think that 3.6 ghz processor will have problems? I didn't mention it earlier but there is 2 1gig ram sticks in it too. And when a decent 64 bit OS comes out that came play FFXI I can upgrade to 8 gig ram. Don't know if that would help with the loading speeds though.

Loading speeds are generally to do with your internet connection, fast connection > less loading time.

Do you have the dual-core variety of processor? If you don't, you'll have huge bottlenecks, because one core can only do so much when it's doing twice the work, especially when there's a lot of data to shove around.

If you're really looking for fast loading speeds, I suggest you get a striped RAID array set up. This will mean an extra investment of money and time, seeing as how you'd have to repartition for windows to allow this, but you'll roughly double your loading speed with striped RAID. (hard drives are the slowest part of a computer)

You have plenty of RAM. That's not an issue. Keep the kernel for Windows always in memory to keep performance at its highest, because it won't be doing that silly swap-out thing if you do. TweakUI will allow you to change that.

Also, make sure that your SLI cards have the newest drivers. SLI cards have been known to have problems with hook.dll (which Windower uses), and may balk at it. Try to use the non-interlaced frame mode too, because that will help lower the amount of data the cards are sending to each other. (this mode forces the cards to act separately)

No, I don't have a daul core. I was going to wait until I can get a 3.2 ghz dual at a decent price. $1200 for 2.6 I think is what they are right now and I can't justify paying that at the moment. Oh don't worry about the video, I'll be going pro-scan the entire way. Not going to waste $500 on a monitor though if I can't do what I want with the two screens lol. DVI is awsome and the only way I would go with an interlaced signal would be if I hooked it into my tv.

Untill SE comes out with a patch that allows XI to take advantage of the new technologies like Dual core or even SLI, you will only ever be running under an "emulation" mode so to speak, and it will never be as fast as it really could be, if the game was truly designed to use the hardware.

Remember XI is still living in a DirectX 8.1 world :(

I ran just fine running two at once, but other than PLing myself it's not very useful. for me.

I have a 3GHz P4, 800FSB, standard 7200 WD 120Gig HD, 128 Radeon 9700, and a gig of dual-channel DDR400

but, to give you fair warning I also have water cooling and a fan-bus so I can turn on up to 8 case fans and a 9th larger fan on the top =o

No, you will not be able to play on two accounts simultaneously. Your first problem is inputs. Second is the fact that you can only have one window "in-focus" at a time. Now if you were doing something like a bazaar while xp'n, or crafting during party downtime, or muling back and forth, it would work, you just can't do 2 things at the same time though.
