If anyone actually got this far and didn't TLDR at it, I should point out that overall, in spite of all the above stuff (which I consider to be the game's more glaring flaws), I still actively played AND ENJOYED the game for four and a half years. There's a lot of other stuff I'm *not* mentioning, which I did like. And maybe it'd be just as helpful to give SE a list of things I wish they *wouldn't* change, but frankly I think the audience can agree I've blathered on quite long enough as it is.![]()
I read it! =P
For vertical gear progression, what needs to be done is have new content replace maybe 1-2 item slots at most per job with better gear, and cycle it so it's not that your weapon is outdated every few months. The way some other mmo's makes it is so old content is completely useless, a new player doesn't even do old content since it's 100% abandoned. In ffxi no matter when you join, you still have to take a nice tour of sky. And I like this. Basically, vertical gear progression should not obsolete the need to do old content. You are right about the "RL neglect" problem, and the impossibility of doing all events at once, but I think that's part of the challenge and fun, to balance out the needs of a guild over the impossibility of doing it all without having 20+ish "fat kids in mama's basement" players (and of course there will still be those hardcore guilds who play 24/7 and do it all).
I also really liked ffxi's economy, quite possibly that's because I got very lucky and ended up moderately wealthy. The one thing that would need to be done in a new game is add more possible revenue sources. As for rmt, that needs to be fought actively, not passively. RMT will always exist, and it'll be impossible to eliminate them, but if you fight the "Obvious" rmt accounts, then players themselves will be less directly bothered by rmt. I'd suggest that SE try to control the economy a bit to prevent massive deflation or inflation from happening all at once, but I have a feeling they'd do a worse job than governments do =P
It's hard to say for me that things should run faster in a game, I like the slowness alot because of how amazing it was to finally overcome something. I vividly remembered the day we claimed and killed nidhogg, our strategies involved ariel armor on pld/war tanks and blms logging off for hate midfight, the first time I had to log off for hate, I had to jump around my room in excitement to use up of some of the massive adreleine that was being wasted pressing keys on a keyboard. If I remember correctly I think that lead to the first E.body not obtained through a jp linkshell, despite it not being my item, I was proud to have it in my linkshell. And there's tons of long stories like this I could pull out, sky, dynamis, tiamat, sea, etc...
Had we been able to try these over and over, the accomplishment wouldn't of felt as great. I really did enjoy ffxi and feel like it has tons of good points about it, and would love to see a game that kept a lot of what I loved about ffxi in it, despite not having the time to play one lol...
