Hey, for all you pet owners, I has a question.

I just got a new puppy yesterday and my old puppy is scared shitless of him. My old puppy buddy is about 7 months old and the new one is 2 months old.

Buddy the 7 month old will panic and shake whenever the new puppy(Fenrir) goes near him. Anyone got any good tips to deal with something like this? I don't think buddy has ate once since we got Fenrir because Fenny is always at his food.

This is really bugging me. Any help would be super.

Also I'll post pics of them later when Fenrir doesn't look like a Shadow on my floor lol

Edit: Buddy has never had a problem being around other dogs. During the summer he was humping dogs 5x his size at my moms company picnic.

It's possessed.

... I think that says more than enough. After all, who's not scared of Fenny?

Honestly it doesn't make sense, although Buddy probably thinks that something is 'off' with the new dog, or might even feel threatened by him. Would time be a factor? He might not be used to another pet in the household, but I'm not sure if Fen is the first, so that might be a moot point.

Ok i have a simular situation to this in my house and all it took was a little getting used to. New puppies are normally over aggressive and don't know when to take hints that the older dog is not interested in playing 24/7. The problem is that the younger dog has soo much energy that the older dog (tho still a puppy) is probably feeling dominated.

The only thing thats gonna fix this is time. Once they find their boundaries they will be friendly new puppies in my experience always tend to scare established dogs.

I agree with Dejavu. Your old puppy probably isn't used to "sharing" you or it's home and is just adjusting to the new addition to the family. Just give them time, and they will learn to be more comfortable around one another. :)

Well for one who wouldn't be scared shitless of a dog named Fenrir >_>

On a more real note, this usually happens when you get new dogs who are younger. Last year I watched over my moms co-workers dog who is about 2 years and my dog Jaspar who was 8 years old at the time was petrified of him. Usually it's just because the younger dogs are super hyper and piss off the other dogs. Best way to fix the problem (worked for me atleast) is to keep Buddy's food in a different part of the house from Fenrir for a week or so. After that week slowly progress his food dish closer or to a closer room.

This worked for me, took about 3-4 weeks to get them to tolerate eachother.

Dogs do have bad dreams sometimes and you're older dog nay feel it's watching it's worst nightmare come to life when another dog was brought into the house. Can't have the younger dog all up in the older dogs bowl either.

Give boath dogs a good bath using the same prouducts so they smell roughly the same. Then hand feed them a special treat only at the same time. Perhapse the older dog will start to grow fond of the younger dog, when the only treat time offered to them is when they are together, and the yonger dog can score a treat for them boath. Just don't spoil them.

I'm no professional dog trainer, i'm just a really conceited guy. But it's worth a try anyway.

I encountered a similar problem with cats at my old job at the warehouse I used to work at. Being cats I dunno how accurate this will be since their behivour is much different than dogs. There is this lady that worked there part time and brought in a stray cat she found on the side of the road, wondering. The other two cats that we had already were scared to death of it. Whenever the stray cat came near them they pause for awhile staring at it. If the cat got closer they'd hiss at it. They probably just felt threatened since the stray cat was now living in their terrority. All it took was time for them to get used it. We fed the stray cat with the same food at the same times as the other two cats. Similar to what Antt was saying about giving them equal treatment. All it took was time and they "accepted" the cat and even played with one another. It took about a month or so for them to get adjusted to the stray. So yeah just try what Antt said and see what happens. It may work with dogs too.

Hmm, let me ask you something. What breed are the two dogs, and what's the size difference?

I'm more of a cat person, but larger dogs tend to be more scared of smaller dogs for some reason. Additionally, smaller dogs tend to have a more aggressive behavior. Is the 7 month old puppy a larger dog/breed, while Fenrir is a smaller dog/breed?

I'll take a guess, and say that the larger dog (Buddy) is somewhat calmer, and the smaller dog (Fenrir) have a more aggressive behavior. And no, I don't mean aggressive as he constantly barks and shows teeth all the time. Most puppies are aggressive in nature and constantly try their boundaries and match their strength with other dogs by biting and playing in order to see who have the highest rank. Which Buddy, being an older dog, isn't used to having at his home. Thus, he feel threatened by Fenrir, whom Buddy believes is trying to take over.

As for how you can solve it, I think the best would be to give Buddy a private area that he can escape to in order to relax, which could be hard. After they've spent some time together and got used to each other. By, say, being outside and playing together, Buddy will get more used to the new dog. However, it is very important that you don't prevent Buddy from showing Fenrir that he is the alpha male, which he'll most likely do by biting him in the neck skin and pulling him to the ground on to his back, and growling repeatedly.

Also, you say that he's never had problems with other dogs, which is natural, since those dogs are outside, and not in his home which is his territory. He knows that outside is playtime, and humping is a way of showing who the leader is. Which is also why its important to not let them hump you, since they'll think they're in control.

Dog behavior is actually rather interesting. I have 2 dogs myself, one is a year, and the other is 3 months old. The 1 year old dog is dominating over the 3 month dog. However, the smaller dog want to dominate over something as well, so she dominates over the kittens, and tend to get them on their backs, and can even bite their tails and drag them around. The kittens are so used to it though that they tend to not do anything, and can occasionally go to sleep by the dogs. The hilarious part is that the cat mom, who is also used to the dogs (although they don't dominate over her) can just sit there and watch as the puppy bites them and drags them around the house, without doing anything.

well, buddy's mom is a slut we think... that thing is too big to be full shitzu. they're theoretically mostly the same breed.
buddy is also at least as aggressive... well, he bites more.. or chews more, and when he fights back he sends fenny running. and he seems more hyper at times, but he clams down faster, and he'll sit still if you want him to. but that's usually true comparing an older dog to a puppy lol...
