I can honestly say this has been one of the better reads on QCDN in a while. Nice to see a Japanese pov on a topic that I myself find so interesting. I, in the past have checked Raiz and got the spamming checks and angry looking faces those japanese keyboards can produce. I was also called a "NA Cherry boy" by her/him which gave me a good laugh.

I would like to know exactly what that japanese client says when you check someone. I understand it's something to the effect of "insert char name here" stares at you intently yadda yadda... Which sounds kind of intense for something so simple from my point of view. "so and so examines you" is pretty lax and non invasive sounding I think.

All and all it for sure comes down to Raiz is crazy, and every culture no matter how proud always has defective members who can soil someones image of another group of people.
"Uzor is eying you from across the room, undressing you with his eyes."
If america was going to attack Japan, the Navy would be the least of their worries.

P.S. I'm still wondering what the racial slur was/ment.
Were before the invention of the nuclear bomb. And they did open up for trading, didn't they? So I believe they were aware of what their worries would become.

Negro is a color, so its not really racist. People have made it in to a racist word, but it really isn't. Its the same with a lot of other thing.

Bitch is a female dog

Gay is an old word, meaning happy. People gave it to homosexual people due to the generalized homosexual (you know, the flamboyantly gay ones dressing in extreme dresses) always looking and acting happy.

Fag is a cigarette

faggot is a bundle of sticks

Honestly, why do people take offense to a word? The word itself holds no meaning. If someone calls a black person a "n i g g e r", why take offense to it? Is he ashamed of having a different skin color? Because, after all, its a slang of the word negro, negro being spanish for black. What's so offensive about it? Hell, if someone calls you gay, why take offense to it? The word itself just means happy.

Sure, the word faggot most likely doesn't derive from the word "fag", nor do they mean a bundle of stick. Its most likely a "slang" of the word "fagging", which is basically a boy acting as a servant for an older boy. Basically, a homosexual man acting as a sexual slave to an older man, and later on, a homosexual man being in a relationship with another man.

Either way, the reason you find a word offensive is because you're taught they are offensive. But really, what's offensive about a word? Sure, faggot is a little more offensive than being called "gay", due to its original meaning, but the offensive part sits with the word being related to homosexuality. Are you afraid of being homosexual? Do you find it wrong to be homosexual? Because those are the only reasosn you could find the word being offensive. Its the same with "n i g g e r", are you ashamed of it? Most of the offensive words is the same, they're offensive because you want them to be, but they're really not. They're just words. Gaijin is the same. Sure, its a slang of the word "outsider", but why is that so offensive? The game company, and the servers, are in Japan. You are technically a foreigner, but why take that offensive?

Seriously, what's next? Are we going to make "foreigner" an insult now too? I have a list of words we can use when we want to insult people. There's a lots of words we can use if you'd like, such as "Whitey" and "Milkey", or why not "Blanco"? Blanco as just as offensive as Negro. And if you want a slang of it to make it even more offensive, I would suggest using "Bligger".

While we're on it, I've never really understood why "Pussy" is such an offensive word. I'm sure a lot of guys wouldn't mind getting some pussy. Yes, yes, I know, the offensive part about it is being referred to as a woman. But in all honesty, why exactly is that offensive? Additionally, dick. wtf kind of sad excuse for an insult is that? "Fucking dick"? Yes please, if you insist.

The only true insults are "Moron" and "Idiot". Retard, to some extent, can be an insult, it depends on which kind of retardation you're referring to.

My psych prof told me that idiot and moron used to refer to people who had less than 80 IQ. Like Forrest Gump, he would medically be called an idiot, or something of that nature. I think any lower than Forrest (those who needed to be in institutions) would be considered a moron. Or it could be vice versa.

Hmmm, it's not all I can do though. One of many things, yes.
You've raised some decent points in this thread but you've also done some things that are super fucking lame. I wasn't the only one to call you on that either, so fucking bite me. You may go back to listening to Ashlee Simpson now and thinking the rest of us are all emo, lol.

Urban legend has it that the term "faggot" was associated with gay people because of being burned at a stake (which is how the original bundle-of-sticks term ties in). But yes, your point is valid: it's offensive because we're taught it's a more offensive way of saying "gay" or "homosexual". (Speaking of those two words, the former is, in and of itself, probably the least offensive description; the latter has more of a clinical edge to it.)

quote of Uzor trying too hard

In the use of certain terms, be they racist, sexist, or just generally insulting, what matters less is the reaction of the person the word is being used to describe as much as the intent of the person using the word, and the societal connotation that the word carries.

Yes, 'n i g g e r' is a slang contraction of negro, which means black. Black, in and of itself, is not offensive, and there was a time when "the N-word" was a common use phrase. In the South, where the people it was being used to describe were either a.) slaves, or b.) 2nd-class citizens. The word typically carries a significant negative connotation in the US, though attempts by the black community to suborn it have largely been effective within their own racial group.

I might add that the process of suborning a racial/cultural slur is hardly unique, and in fact happens quite a bit, though it's generally not all that especially successful outside of the group the slur is typically used to refer to.

What it boils down to is this: When you use a slur to refer to someone, your intent is to belittle and demean them. To make them less human than you. Sure, the person you're insulting can let that roll off of them, and in a free society it's necessary to allow people to say whatever they want (and thus imperative for people to develop a thick skin when it comes to such things,) but that never has any impact on the intent.

Yes, but why is it insulting? Since its directed towards you, its all in how you take the word. If you don't find it offensive, then the attempt to offend you fail. Does it matter that much what the other person think of you? What the intent is doesn't matter, its just words. If someone tries to insult you, does it matter? If you don't know him, you don't want to know him, so why take the insult to heart? There's lots of idiots and morons out there, and if we'd have to consider what all of them thought of everything, we'd be thinking all day long about pointless things.

My point is, if you don't find it offensive, then it isn't an insult. What someone else thinks of you doesn't matter. So why is it offensive?

Too bad its not quite that simple in the real world, no matter how much you want that to be.

Oh, but it is. What's so hard about it? Physical violence is much harder to avoid. But we're speaking about the mental part, not the physical part.

Do you honestly go /wrist in a corner everytime someone calls you a faggot?

Jokes aside, when a friend calls you faggot, do you take offense to it? Hell, if a friend throws an insult at you, do you take offense to it? I'd guess you're like me and don't take offense to it. Its not that much harder to not take offense to things other people tell you.

Did you know that the human brain associate getting rejected, with direct physical pain, and in some cases even death? You know why? Because it used to be vital to our survival. If we got rejected by the group, it ment we'd have a harder time living, and could end up dead. That's still hard-wired to our brain, and is why the number 1 phobia in the entire world is fear of rejection. It is closely related to bad self-esteem as well, and social phobia. People walk around, and try to fidn things that are wrong with themselves, and find stuff that proves it, even though they might not be real. An example is someone walking down the street, and suddenly find someone is looking at them (even though they might have been looking past them, or only caught eye contact for a second), and suddenly think "Oh, he/she's staring at me, must be becasue I'm ugly", or "he/she must be staring at my <insertrandomthinghere>, I hate my <insertrandomthinghere>". This is actually more common then you think. If you walk down the street, you'll see a lot of people refusing eye contact, or simply staring down at the road. These people are making their own reality. If you tell yourself something enough, you'll "make it come true", that's why so many psychologists tell people to force themselves to look in the mirror and say "I'm beautiful". Not because it actually makes them more beautiful, but because they'll learn to accept it. And believe it or not, it actually DOES make a huge difference in self-esteem.

Sure, someone saying "You're so ugly" is an attempt at offending you, but if you know you're not ugly, then why would you take offense to it? You'll just shrug it off and say "Oh well". People that have huge success with women do get rejected, a lot, but they don't take a rejection hard. They shrug it off and learn what to improve for next time. Other people take a rejection like its the end of the world.

For some reason, people think its much worse to get rejected or doing something embarrassing by people they don't know and will most likely never meet again, then by friends and family. Most people don't have a problem farting in hearing/smelling range of their family, guys usually don't have a problem doing it in smelling /hearing range of their friends, but a great majority have problems doing it in public.

You know why? Because we're taught that its something bad and taboo. Its the same with words, we're taught that they are bad, so we make them bad. Sadly, most parents don't make it better by telling their kids that they are not allowed to say certain words, and protect their kids from it. They only help teaching their kids that the words are bad. Sure, it might prevent them from using it in their home, but they can't protect them from them forever, and it won't suddenly remove them from the world.

A verbal jab is no different than a physical one, both of which have two major factors - the way it's given and the way it's received. If your friend gives you a playful jab in the arm or calls a name you generally don't feel any offense to it. Some random person calls you a name or jabs you in the arm, what then?

Yeah, it's entirely people's choices as to how they react but it's also natural for a person to take a defense stance when approached aggressively, whether physically or verbally...even animals react this way, which can be easily seen when playing with your dog; if they know you're playing they'll happily go along with it, but if it's someone they don't know, they may completely lash out.

It's usually glaringly obvious if someone means for a word to belittle you, and most people will take offense to that. It's not so much whats said, it's moreso their perception to specific words and how people say things, as well as the history behind words. Not everyone will be offended by being called "Bitch" or "Fat" or "Pussy" or "Dumbass", or whatever insult thrown their way. Some even get offended by things some may not even call insulting - one person in my Math class stood at about 6'7'', and got pissed when people called him tall.

Is it silly to get upset at simple words? Sounds we only use to communicate to one another? It definitely is. But everyone does it, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Also, this thread needs less Pride.

Don't get me wrong, I know its normal, and I'm not saying you should practice to not take offense to a word. I'm just simply asking why you take offense to it, mainly because a lot of people seem to have taken offense to the gaijin picture which were an obvious joke. Another example is another thread, in which apparently a lot of people took offense to Ruffy saying something offensive. In all honesty, I couldn't find WHAT was offensive, and apparently neither could some others, they just jumped they racist bandwagon.

What's insulting is not the word, but the intent behind the word.

As in so many other things, the intent is the most important factor to consider.

And yes, as I said earlier, you can choose to ignore the verbal slings and arrows of those who attempt to harm you through words. But first, not everyone has that armor. Not everyone can have that armor, which is something that ought to be considered regardless. Second, and more relevant to this conversation, just because I choose not to let it affect me personally, nothing is changed in the intent of the offender in question. It's akin to someone taking a swing at your face and you blocking or dodging. Just because he failed doesn't the attempt itself less reprehensible.

For myself, I took no particular offense at the lolGaijin pic that was posted. What irritated me was the attempt to explain it away as "well, it's not really a racist word", because I don't particularly enjoy being lied to. Especially by someone who apparently thinks they can get away with it.

The word kraut is also ?????.

Biggest dipshit since Isotope, shut your cake hole already. Jesus H.
(Not you, Kirula, lol)

You never learn your lesson do you? You lost your moderator priviledges by calling me out once before, and here you are talking trash again like a little kid. You'd have to be pretty new to these forums, or a complete imbasile not to realize that you were purposely baiting me, but meh w/e, the hell if I care, but i'm not too sure others will be happy with you for it.

Oh and I figured it might be nice to point out that since you still don't believe I was the cause for your moderator status being revoked.... Have you noticed recently that Eleibfrid no longer appears to be an admin or mod? I had been temp banned and then perm banned on the day the temp ban was supposed to end. The ban was entirely unwarranted as I was responding to Meeze in the same manor he had addressed me. Meeze had made a threat of physical violence & I responded with an invitation via PM for said chance for said physical violence to ensue. My response had been made by PM and not via regular post for all others either, but Meeze had decided to go crying to his buddy Eleibfrid (or at least his buddy at the time). Eleibfrid had wrongfully banned me for making a physical violence threat (even though I was only responding to one & via PM) & then perma banned to make matters worse, but the icing on the cake to show the other mods & admins that his actions were done with personal motives in mind, was that the perma ban wasn't put into effect until the exact day the temp ban was going to end. As far as I know, Meeze may not have even been banned for being the one to initially make a threat of physical violence. I had reported this unjust banning about a month ago and now Eleibfrid is just a senior member.

I'm still around, I still play the game, just perhaps not with the same character name, or job. For all you know, most of you may already have become friends with me unknowingly, even though you saw fit to jump about the flaming bandwagon of one of many well-known flamers that post in this forum & talk shit. When I'm done with my little in-game experiment, I'll be sure to let you know in-game one way or another & see how things go from there.

Chances are at this point, anyone who responds negatively now will only cause the stretching of this topic, into areas the topic's title does not suggest, nor was it meant to go. You would probably also be putting yourself in the spotlight of the flameboard for all moderators and admins to see, which for you may not be very wise a thing. I would suggest not bringing my name up in a negative mannor again, as to avoid any further flame baiting, and so that the board may resume a calmer flow. Thank you.
