Doomsday clock

idk if im missing something but..... who cares? The shit changes all the time, going from 2 secs to doomsday to 17 seconds like 20 years later. Wouldn't it only count down? Like i said maybe im missing something but the shit seems pretty worthless to me. Just some scientists that predict how much the world "could" possible be screwed.

What Raider said. Fancy way to speculate is all it is.

.. that clock is useless, and not even a "prediction".

I mean... "zOMG! The world is going under! Better rush to the Doomsday Clock to set the clock to midnight to show how much we're doomed!"... like people didn't already know that by the time they set the clock to midnight.

Oh! It's time for me to sing the Doom Song!

Doom doom doom doom~DOOM

Fuck the clock, hundereds of years ago the Mayans figured out that the end of the world would be sometime in 2008 if I'm not mistaken, and they've yet to be wrong with their predictions. In the records we've found they even predicted hurrican Katrina. And it wouldn't suprise me, 2008 is an election year >.>; lolhillaryclinton

Well, yes... they did predict a lot of things... Thing is, they saw the world as a cycle, so by knowing the past and what affected it, they can know the future and what causes it.

And think about it, comes as quite natural when the normal year cycle goes through the same periods. Winter changes to spring, changes to summer etc. It repeats itself every year. So by knowing what affects the change, they can also know what causes it in the future.

They also saw that every day, the sun travels across the sky, and the stars and planets move around too. They always followed the same pattern. So naturally, everything must follow the same rule. Life itself followed it too, after all. Humans are born, raised, and dies. Everything repeats itself.

The flaw in their prediction is that they assumed the world's life cycle was 5200 years, which is why their callendar ends at around 2011/2012. While they very well may be right in that something will happen that year, it's already several times past their world's cycle.

Gods were of great importance to them, and by sacrificing blood or lives to the gods, by, as an example, cutting your own penis and letting the blood drip on to a paper, which was later burned to send human energy to the gods.

They could also contact the gods, and thus let the gods tell you about the future. By cutting the sacrifice open, they could speak with the gods and know the future during the time it took for the sacrifice to die. From what I remember, they stabbed them at 5 spots around the heart, but I can't remember exactly if it was the mayans...

The interresting thing is that the finalized mayan calendar is more then 1/10,000th more exact then the standard calendars used today

1. How do you know?
2. Don't know about that, but everything else you said was about the Mayans.

I believe he means, that according to their calendar the world should had already "ended".

I think what "will" happen is an age of reformation, probably Rapture and Tribulation acording to catholic religion. But in our religion we dont have a set date. I may be religious and spiritual but I do not believe @ all in this about the world coming to an end.

Because the world have existed for longer then 5200 years.

The mayans followed 2 callendars, one 260 day callendar called Tzolkin (Sacred Round), and a 360 day one called Haab. The Haab consisted of 18 months with 20 days each, and ending with 5 "unlucky" days each year. Every 52 years, the Haab and Tzolkin would concede (sp?) every 52 years, and were celebrated (similar to our centuries). This time was also feared, since the world could possibly end if the gods aren't pleased.

Basically, they predicted the world would end the 100th time this happend. What I personally can't understand, though, is that each this "world" would be 5,200 years long, but they still had numbers for way longer years then 5,200.

Although I suppose it is possible they didn't predict the future, but rather a time a lot of humans would die due to the gods being unpleased.

Edit: come to think of it, the exact wording for the 5,200 year cycle is "cycle of creating and destruction", and not world. So cince they supposedly had monuments that explained what happened millions of years ago (thus the need for such high numbers), it could be considered an era. So the mayan calendar might end there simply due to it being the end of their century, and not the world itself.

Let's compare it to our system. Then 52 years = 10 years, and 5,200 years = 100 years = 1 century.

Another thing that leads me to believe that 2012 isn't the predicted end by the mayans are their constant fear that the world is going to end every 52 years when the 2 callendars meet up. Humans have an obligation to the gods and need to keep them pleased in order for the world to continue, and the world's fate would forever be decided at tis point. But if the mayans had predicted the world would end at 2012, why would they be affraid the world would end every 52 years?

Jesus you know alot about this shit. Yeah I do remember hearing something about it being interpreted as the end of the world because they said that was when the creation cycle would end.

Yeah, but it might aswell have been that it wasn't considered possible to predict the future more then 100 cycles ahead, that the world was "renewed" every 100 cycles, and thus having a calendar longer then 5200 years would be meaningless.

The mayans often studdied the skies and planned everything according to the planet's possitions at the sky etc. They crowned their kings on days considered "fortunate" when the planets were lined up properly, so they might have known that the conditions would change every 5200 years.

Fixed.

And the world's not going anywhere, we are. Get it straight.

Planets are hearty lil things.

Edit: Some actual facts about what Uzor's going on about with the prophecies and end of the calendar and whatnot. More interesting reading found here as well.
