Doomsday clock

From the site RoM posted:

As I mentioned above the Mayan calendar was designed to be cyclical, so the fact that the long count comes to an end in Dec 2012, while having some significance for the Maya as the end of a great cycle (much like we celebrated the millennium (incorrectly as it happens) on Dec 31st 1999), does not mean that the "world will come to an end".
Which is basically the same I said. It could simply be a millenium that they decided not to count past, rather then "the end of the world"

They could also contact the gods, and thus let the gods tell you about the future. By cutting the sacrifice open, they thought they could speak with the gods and know the future during the time it took for the sacrifice to die. From what I remember, they stabbed them at 5 spots around the heart, but I can't remember exactly if it was the mayans...

Fixed:crazy:

Actually it does and the events of revelation were metaphores for the current happenings around rome and jarusalem.

But a historical account of then current events doesn't put butts in the pews or money in the collection plates.

Yeah alot of the things in Revelations shouldn't be taken literal, John probably just saw all that modern shit and didn't know how to describe it so he had to use terms and things that were common back then, it's not like he knew what a helicopter or nuclear bomb was, so he just described them the best he could.
And where's the verse that gives time/date? Source or it didn't happen.

I'm going to move the posts that are kind of FB material.. to the FB under a new topic.

Most of what Uzor said was true. However, the Mayans did not predict the world would come to an end every 52 years. Every 52 years just marked a time where there would be lots of strife. Lots of the Dresden Codex has been translated, which is where these prophecies come from. And the Mayans even predicted their own demise. For many of the events that happened since their time, they wrote something about what it would be like. Many of these prophecies pointed to mostly war events, like the American Revolution and World War II being some examples. Apparently, none of the prophecies have not been met. The only time that the Mayans predicted to be something like the End Times is known as Cosmogenesis 2012. According to the final prophecy in the Dresden Codex, the prophecy points to the date December 21, 2012, which the Mayans correlate with an astronomical phenomenon. According to astronomers, that is the date that the Sun will align with the center of the galaxy, which happens every 52,000 somethin years or something like that. Very rare. The interesting thing was that, in the translation, the Mayans pointed to a single God that would bring judgment upon the world. That's how it was written, paraphrased. The Mayans know that it doesn't predict the end of the world but instead, more of a "rebirth". The Mayans thought of time as cyclical, not linear. So when their clock reaches that point in time, the clock will start over (or was it go backwards?).

And yeah, the interesting points are that their clock is supposed to be more accurate, and that they knew so much about astronomy. Supposedly, scientists don't know for sure how they knew so much about these things.

History Channel ftw.
