DOWNTIME TONIGHT! (was: QCDN moving to new hosting plan May 1st)

Well folks, as some of you have noticed, we were knocked off the net earlier today as QCDN was hogging the current server way beyond allocated resources and things got nasty for all customers on the server.

My continuing efforts to optimize memory usage have provided some temporary relief, but the underlying message is that QCDN is just too large to be run on 256MB of guaranteed memory.

Starting May 1st we will be using the Virtual Private Server Plan II. The 512MB guaranteed and 2048MB burstable will hopefully provide sufficient resources for the time being.

There should be minimal downtime while Liquidweb migrates QCDN to VPS2. The IP addresses stay the same, thus we are able to avoid new DNS propagation.

That's al I have for now.

$1200/year

ouch.

I have to say that I'm rather happy QCDN is so large ^^; Best FFXI site on the net imo :p

The increased cost sucks, though >.<

Yall help Sculli out! Donate a go go!

From interactions with forum admins of other boards that are QCDN's size and larger I have found that memory usage is a common problem. Only way to deal with it is to throw more memory at it.

Yeah, gotta calm the monster by giving it more of what it wants :D

Does that mean we'll be able to use animated .gif's again???

Haha, no!
The animated GIF issue is entirely client side. Some gfx cards for some reason have a very hard time to render pages properly. It's hit and miss, my desktops do not have that problem, but my work laptop (Dell 300M) with integrated Intel gfx is lagging badly if anything more than the animated smiles are shown.

It's some combination of AJAX and animated gifs and vBulletin as such that seems to be the cause of this.

Campus lab computers had the same problem when we had vb with animated gifs. Glad those are being kept off.

We will be moving to the new host TONIGHT at 12AM EDT.
Downtime is expected to last around one to two hours. During that time QCDN will be completely knocked off the net, and you will just get a "page not found" error.

With all of the money you put into this board you should make it a resource like somepage. I'd help you, I'm sure many others would too, would only better the site and it's reputation since thats been brought up.

I agree that we could use more information content.
We also have quite a lot of exisiting content that is spread out across threads that at some point get forgotten, so linking to those from a central place would be a good start (I sort of did attempt that in the guides section).

The main focus of QCDN will always be user interaction, a community by Quetz players for Quetz players, but that doesn't mean that those who would like to contribute their in-game experience in guide/tutorial/tables/whatever form won't have the opportunity to do so.

I'm talking about a front page. A portal, so to speak. Vanaguide.com would be a good example if it's still up, or even somepage. We have some very knowledgable members that could contribute. If anything, could at least try it out, not like you couldn't scrap the idea if it didn't work.

Move to the new and improved 512MB guaranteed hosting plan is complete. Everything seems to work fine. I will have to restart mysql at some point in the next few days one more time, will do that at night as well. Other than that the errors some of you have been getting should not be a thing of the past.

A portal is a little tricky to set up at this point. The portal would have to sit at http://www.qcdn.org with the forum being located elsewhere, like http://www.qcdn.org/forum or some such. This would break all current links to QCDN posts, as well as essentially drop QCDN from search engines for the forseeable future. It's a major undertaking, but one that may be worth the effort if there were enough people who would be willing and able to consistently provide content.

Portal/CMS sites thrive on a constant influx of articles worth reading. I am just not sure whether there is enough interest to sustain such requirement over long periods of time.

One example is the reviving of the Vana'diel Tribune under a QCDN logo. We have created the The Quetzalcoatl Tribune forum here at QCDN, received a few sign-ups, one article was written, and the whole thing fizzled.

People are very busy IRL, an additional task that they have to complete on a daily/weekly/monthly/whatever basis may seem like a good idea at first, but will become a burden quickly.

Looking through the Vanaguide message board, one thing that took the most time was to actually write content, even though the Vanaguide team did get some help from their members. Still, their content section that is not the item database is small, even though they have thousands of active members.

I am 100% certain that QCDN has some dedicated talent to produce quality FFXI content articles, but do those members actually have the time and desire to do it on a regular basis to make a portal installation worth it? That I am not sure about.

A good start would be to just write a guide within the message board as such and post it. I can even create a read only section where guides are posted so that there isn't an entire thread that goes with it at that location, and it can link to a discussion thread that is located elsewhere.
