Japan!

I get to go for just a week in January. I get to visit one of the most advanced chemical laboratories in the world, visit Hiroshima, Tokyo, Osaka, and Tamaya, ride on the bullet, see Mt. Fuji, and do something with the Genji (?) river. :> Thank god for study abroad programs!! XD

Anyways, anyone ever been (or live there XD) that can tell me things I need to check out while I am there? I am very excited about it ^^ and I was hoping you guys could tell me what to "expect" so to speak. :)

Walk around with a shirt that says NA ONRY.

Chemical lab?

Japan?

O SHI-

Though that might be funny.... I think I will pass.

The class is called "An International Aspect of Environmental Chemistry" so I kinda have to have a semi professional look.

Check out www.sushicam.com it's a good collection of stories from foriegners in japan. Might show some places you want to look.

Or drop the website owner an email. Jeff, he's an environmental engineer in Yokosuka working for the US Navy. Very nice guy he'd be more than happy to help you out.

Or visit their forums and post the exact same question. You'd get a good response I think.

Not really something to check, but something to remember. Always carry those little packets of tissues with you, because a lot of public restrooms don't have toilet paper. Maybe purchase a phrase book, two that I have that are very useful are "Barron's Japanese at a Glance" Phrase book and dictionary, and "The Original Point-and-Speak Phrasebook 21" English addition. The second one is actually incredibly useful. It has pictures and small discriptions of a lot of things, as well as side notes, and descriptions of some cultural things in the back. The most interesting part, is the back cover can be written on with a water-soluble marker for a memo, and then you can just wipe it clean.

I'll be going to Japan next summer, doing a homestay, and then traveling with my Japanese class. I'm really looking forward to it, and I might be staying in Japan instead of comming back to the states afterwards. Other than that, I can't really think of anything, but enjoy yourself and have fun!

I am already deathly afraid of public restrooms... I am from Kentucky so I have every right to be!!!! XD So I will definitely take your suggestion, ty :)

I can't wait to go... I know a few phrases of Japanese that exchange students have taught me (some of them are "not for good girls to say in public") and a few other things that I have picked up from animes and Japanese movies.
My professor that I am going on the trip with is fluent in Japanese. He recieved one of his doctorate degrees there after moving there from India in just two years!! O.O He told me he didn't know a word of Japanese and knew very little english when he started. (I call this brilliance XD)

Wow you're really gonna be all over Japan. It sounds like, from the places you'll be going, that you'll be seeing enough as it is.

I live in Japan. I'd give some pointers, but I live on a Japanese island a few hours south of the mainland, so I really can't give much input. Just soak up the culture and have fun with it.

Tokyo is a sensory overload. :D I love it so much. I've tried getting a job out there a few times.

Simple survival tip:

benjo/toire wa doko desu ka. "Where is the toilet?" Either word is fine, Benjo is just more formal since it's not a foreign word, which most elder Japanese hate.

Ofcourse, you're banking on the fact that she has a camera phone. News Flash: America isn't as hyped about Cell Phones as England and Japan. While more and more people ARE getting mobiles here, we're still behind those two countries as far as volume goes.

Another thing to remember is, despite what they say in FFXI, a great deal of the Japanese know some English as it's a required high school class.

really USA useing bricks still? never knew that but here most people have 1-3 mobile phones XD

I wouldn't say old style cell phones, but camera phones are no where near as used around here compared to models without cameras.

America has a higher population of aging business class cell phone users. They do not need camera phones.

Hooha, baby boomers will make me rich!

:O! I just noticed you also attend MSU <.<;. Kinda freaky in a way...but anyways, I hope you have a good time in Japan o.ob

Don't worry about tissues.. hahahahahahahahah! You'll see why I'm laughing when you get there.

I was half expecting the first line to include the word jail, but I guess japan works too :)

Have fun on your trip, I'd love to visit japan some time and be a ばかがいじん hehe :)

I went to Japan for 10days as a birthday present from my friend's dad when my friend and me turned 13. Yeah he's f'in loaded. We were part of a tour (wich i would deffinatly not do again) that took us to 20 different temples and shrines.

If you can go check out the biggest Buddah in the world... i think it's in Nara or something. Also in Tokyo and Kyoto and pretty much any major city, they should have a 2-3 story arcade called Sega Joypolice. That's where my friend and i spent most of our time. We played games like Super Monkey Ball and some of the music based games like DDR but for drums... can't remember what it was called, but we played them there almost 2 years before i saw them in the states. So deffinatly check that out.

Get used to the way they pronounce names of places that we have here to such as McDonalds. They pronounce it (Mc-a-doo-nauldos.) Yeah crazy, oh and they're like 3-4 stories tall because they base taxes for buildings on how much horizontal space they take up because of the crowdedness there.

The bullet train is cool, but when we were there they were developing a new tain that levitaded a bit off the tracks by magnets or something. I think it was called "The Halo" or "Light Rail" or something, but it was supposed to go 500km/h. Yeah that means you could get from Tokyo to Kyoto in 1 hour (about 300m apart.)

Only thing else i can tell you is to take lots of pictures and soak it all in! Have fun. Yeah and most people there know some english because they're required to take 6 years of it in school!

OMG! I thought I was the only ffxi dork on this campus!!! I have no school spirit and can't wait to get away from here but all right XD

I appreciate telling me how to ask where the rr's are ^^ and speaking of japanese my rl best friend told me I should get a shirt that says in Japanese "I am a strange foreigner". lol I think I should go with the one that says "Looking for a Japaneses boyfriend." XD

I am very glad I have a camera phone and a small video camera to take with me as well. I am going to be so over whelmed when I get there!

OH! Masamura are you laughing because in some asian cultures (I know it happens in Tailand but not sure the rest) in women's rest rooms they have a button you can push that sounds like water flushing to hide the sounds of them going to the bathroom? Don't laugh XD lol that's cool and we need it in america!!
