The January issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly is the last. UGO bought 1Up and now they're swinging the axe. The magazine is going "poof," and most of the staff has been hit with layoffs, killing off The 1Up Show and most of their podcasts. Blah.

The magazine will be missed. Their April Fool's jokes were great (I remember being horrified at the thought of a kart racing game based on Lord of the Rings), and I liked the three-reviews-per-game setup. I guess I did my part to kill off the magazine by not renewing my subscription awhile back.

The podcast announcement also sucks. I liked watching 1Up Show on Saturday mornings and listening to Retronauts. /sigh

Here's hoping 1Up doesn't go the way of TechTV, where another company buys the name and kills everything that was great about their purchase.

;/ I used to get this a while back. Thats too bad it was a fun mag.

That is suck. I loved EGM growing up. I found it both funny and credible. But the internet is indeed killing off print media. I just hope those great editors find jobs. ign should sweep em up.

Boo!

MEGABOO!

I loved EGM, even though I wasn't an avid reader. I disliked the specific-brand mags like PS Magazine or Nintendo Power ... primarily of the :dur:bias.

RIP EGM, and although I never watched the 1up show, I'll lift my glass to it as well.

I share the sentiments about TechTV; I'm still sore about the loss of "The Screen Savers" and the retarded addition of "Attack of the Show!"

They fired like 65-70% of 1up's employees already.

Pretty sad.

Wow this is sad...I remember getting my art in that Special Edition Playsation one with the Amano FFX art on the front. RIP EGM, definitely a great magazine.

Yeah, EGM was a great magazine back when I was growing up, some of the issues in the SNES/Genesis days topped 300 pages. I also remember the famous Sheng Long April Fools joke for Street Fighter 2, and I loved reading Sushi-X/Dan Hsu reviews.

The sad fact is though print magazines can't compete with today's technology. EGM tried to have exclusives last year with some articles, I remember the big deal of them having the 1st Street Fighter 4 images, and then it being leaked on the internet. You can't even pack in demos now because XBL & Playstation's Network do all that for you.

Here's hoping some of that staff can move on to new jobs.

Off-topic, but is GamePro still around, cause that would really suck if they're still doing magazines but EGM is gone. I also liked reading Play & Gamefan, but I'm pretty sure those have been done for years, I think.

I loved EGM back in the day. But as others have said, the Internet really obsoletes some types of printed media, in particular gaming magazines. I can't really comment any more than this since 1up is a competitor of my company.
