Richard Clark told his administration that the attacks were coming. He chose to ignore.

http://www.nationalreview.com/document/clarke200403221131.asp

Myth: We didn't listen to Dick Clarke. Clarke had proposed ideas against al-Qa'ida, such as launching missiles from an armed Predator or modestly increasing assistance to the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan, that would have prevented 9-11 but these plans were not acted upon.

The Facts: At Dr. Rice's request, in January 2001, Dick Clarke presented her with a number of ideas to address the al-Qa'ida threat. The Administration acted upon the ideas that made sense. For example, the Administration approved increased assistance to Uzbekistan, a frontline state in opposing al-Qa'ida, and pushed hard to develop a weaponized Predator unmanned aerial vehicle.

Although the Administration pushed development of the Predator, the
Predator was not available to be used against bin-Ladin before September 11. Extensive work and testing was required to develop a warhead that would be effective, and NSC Deputies were told that testing would not be completed until August at the earliest. Even if the Predator had been available, the Intelligence Community never presented senior officials with specific intelligence regarding bin Ladin's location. At the same time, the Intelligence Community also told senior Administration officials that killing bin Ladin would not destroy al-Qa'ida. Moreover, we know now that, according to the FBI, 16 of the 19 hijackers were in the United States by June 2001; there is no reason to believe that killing bin Ladin would have affected their plan.

Increasing assistance to the Northern Alliance also would not have
prevented 9-11. By 2001, the Northern Alliance had been beaten down by military defeats and controlled less than 10 percent of Afghanistan. Providing a small additional amount of money to the Northern Alliance, as Clarke suggested, would not have enabled them to sweep across Afghanistan and defeat the Taliban. Moreover, providing such assistance likely would have damaged U.S. efforts later to reach out to other tribes in Afghanistan. NSC Deputies developed a more comprehensive strategy to eliminate al-Qa'ida that included assisting tribal groups throughout the country, as well as providing significantly more assistance to the Northern Alliance. But such assistance, even if provided earlier, would not have disrupted the 9-11 hijackers, who were not in Afghanistan, but were assembling in the United States.

Although Clarke suggested some ideas to address al-Qa'ida outside the
United States, he did not advocate to the Bush Administration any plan of action to address al-Qa'ida's presence in the United States, such as the need to improve collection of intelligence information by the FBI and to reverse longstanding statutory restrictions and DoJ policies limiting sharing of domestic intelligence on terrorism between the CIA and FBI; or to take actions to root out al-Qa'ida cells in the United States and to make our borders less porous for al-Qa'ida and other terrorists. He also never made us aware of any intelligence assessments from the preceding Administration concerning the use of aircraft as weapons to attack the homeland.

Myth: Dick Clarke was never allowed to brief the President on the threat posed by al-Qa'ida.

The Facts: Dick Clarke was the President's principal counterterrorism expert. If he had asked to brief the President on any counterterrorism issue, Clarke could have done so. He never did.

Instead, the only time Dick Clarke asked to brief the President was during the height of the terrorism threat spike in June 2001, when he asked to brief the President — not on al-Qa'ida, but on cybersecurity. He did so.

Myth: The Administration did not treat the intelligence chatter about an imminent attack during the spring and summer of 2001 with sufficient urgency; Principals did not "go to battle stations."

The Facts: The President and senior Administration officials were very concerned about
the threat spike during the spring and summer of 2001

The President and his NSC Principals received intelligence reports about
the intelligence "chatter" during this period, but none of the intelligence was specific as to time, place, or manner, and was focused overseas.

The Government's interagency counterterrorism crisis management forum (the Counterterrorism Security Group, or "CSG"), chaired by Dick Clarke, met regularly, often daily, during the high threat period. The CSG was at "battle stations." If Dick Clarke or other members of this group needed anything, they had immediate and daily access to their superiors. Dick Clarke never suggested that the President or the Principals needed to intervene to take any immediate action on these threats.

Dick did not ask to brief the President on the al-Qa'ida threat during this period — or at any other time. Instead, in the middle of the al-Qa'ida threat period, Clarke asked to brief the President, but on cybersecurity, not al-Qaida. He did so.

Formal, in-person meetings among Principals were not required; unlike President Clinton, President Bush met every morning with his Director of Central Intelligence, George Tenet for an intelligence briefing. Secretary Card, Dr. Rice, and the Vice President sat in on the briefings. The threat posed by al-Qa'ida and the need for a response was discussed regularly at these high-level meetings, as well as in frequent, regular discussions between Dr. Rice and Tenet. Dr. Rice and Secretaries Powell and Rumsfeld also have a 7:15 am phone call every morning and talk frequently during the day, and in this period they discussed actions to respond to the threat during these calls.

Although the threats were focused overseas, in July, Dr. Rice specifically directed Dick Clarke and his CSG to meet to consider possible threats to the homeland and to coordinate actions by domestic agencies, including the FAA, FBI, Secret Service, Customs, Coast Guard, and Immigration, to increase security and surveillance. During the Summer of 2001, FAA and FBI issued numerous terrorist threat warnings, including a warning about "the potential for a terrorist operation, such as an airline hijacking to free terrorists incarcerated in the United States." Security at federal buildings also were reviewed for vulnerabilities. Overseas, we also disrupted terrorist cells worldwide, significantly increased security at our embassies, and directed US Naval vessels to leave high-risk ports in the Middle East and heighten security at military facilities.

Myth: The Administration didn't act on Dick Clarke's advice to hold a Cabinet meeting early in the Administration to discuss the threat posed by al-Qa'ida.

The Facts: NSC Principals did not need to have a formal meeting to discuss the threat because the threat was already well understood by the Principals and because Dr. Rice had already asked that a comprehensive new strategy to eliminate al-Qa'ida be prepared.

In addition, unlike President Clinton, President Bush met every morning with his Director of Central Intelligence, George Tenet, for an intelligence briefing. Secretary Card, Dr. Rice, and the Vice President sat in on the briefings. The threat posed by al-Qa'ida and the need for a response was discussed regularly at these high-level meetings, as well as in frequent, regular discussions between Dr. Rice and Tenet.

Moreover, NSC Deputies, the second-ranking officials in the NSC departments, met frequently between March and September 2001 to decide the many complex issues involved in the development of the comprehensive strategy against al-Qa'ida, and also oversaw the work by their staffs on these issues. Contrary to Dick Clarke's assertion that he did not brief senior officials until April 30, the first meeting of Deputies was held on March 7, and Dick Clarke briefed the group on al-Qa'ida. Deputies agreed that a National Security Policy
Directive on al-Qa'ida should be prepared.

Myth: Dick Clarke was demoted and "stripped of his Cabinet rank" by President Bush.

The Facts: Dick Clarke never had Cabinet rank.

Dick Clarke continued, in the Bush Administration, to be the National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and the President's principal counterterrorism expert. He was expected to organize and attend all meetings of Principals and Deputies on terrorism. And he did.

During the Clinton Administration, Dick Clarke regularly briefed President Clinton because President Clinton did not meet regularly with his DCI. Since the beginning of his Administration, President Bush has met daily with his DCI for his intelligence briefing. President Bush believes he should get his intelligence principally not from White House staff, but from those directly responsible for US intelligence.

um... i was correcting him, he said it was clinton. as far as my politics i think every politician should be shot and killed, they are all morons.

I believe his point was that during the Clinton administration, the 9/11 hijackers were able to enter the country and train to be pilots. But I'll let Fire explain it.

And strangely enough, Pat Sajak says it as well as I ever could:

Every time I argue with a Liberal, I’m reminded of quarrels I used to have with my parents. The battles never seemed fair because my folks decided what the rules were and what was out of bounds. In addition, because they were parents, they could threaten me in ways I couldn’t threaten them, and they could say things I could never say.

Recently, for example, I was discussing the United Sates Supreme Court with one of my many Liberal friends out in Los Angeles when she said, without any discernable embarrassment, that Justice Anton Scalia was “worse than Hitler.” Realizing she wasn’t alive during World War II and perhaps she may have been absent on those days when her schoolmates were studying Nazism, I reminded her of some of Hitler’s more egregious crimes against humanity, suggesting she may have overstated the case. She had not; Scalia was worse. As I often did when my parents threatened to send me to my room, I let the conversation die.

Aside from being rhetorically hysterical -- and demeaning to the memory of those who suffered so terribly as a result of Hitler and the Nazis -- it served to remind me of how difficult it is to have serious discussions about politics or social issues with committed members of the Left. They tend to do things like accusing members of the Right of sowing the seeds of hatred while, at the same time, comparing them to mass murderers. And they do this while completely missing the irony.

The moral superiority they bring to the table allows them to alter the playing field and the rules in their favor. They can say and do things the other side can’t because, after all, they have the greater good on their side. If a Conservative -- one of the bad guys -- complains about the content of music, films or television shows aimed at children, he is being a prude who wants to tell other people what to read or listen to or watch; he is a censor determined to legislate morality. If, however, a Liberal complains about speech and, in fact, supports laws against certain kinds of speech, it is right and good because we must be protected from this “hate speech” or “politically incorrect” speech. (Of course, they -- being the good guys -- will decide exactly what that is.)

Protests about Ward Churchill, the University of Colorado professor and self-proclaimed Native American, who, among other things, likened some Sept. 11 victims to Adolf Eichmann (there go those pesky Nazis again), were characterized by much of the Left as an effort to stifle academic freedom. But, when Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers’ job is put in jeopardy over a caveat-filled musing about science and gender, it’s okay, because what he said was sooo wrong (even if it has to be mis-characterized to make the point).

When Liberals want to legislate what you’re allowed to drive or what you should eat or how much support you can give to a political candidate or what you can or can’t say, they are doing it for altruistic reasons. The excesses of the Left are to be excused because these folks operate from the higher moral ground and the benefit of the greater wisdom and intelligence gained from that perspective.

In a different West Coast conversation, I complained to another Liberal friend about some of the Left’s tone concerning the 2004 elections. I thought it insulting to hear those “red state” voters caricatured as red-necked rubes. My friend asked, “Well, don’t you think that people who live in large urban areas, who travel and read and speak other languages are better able to make informed choices?” It turns out it is superiority, not familiarity, which breeds contempt.

The rhetoric has become so super-heated that, sadly, I find myself having fewer and fewer political discussions these days. And while I miss the spirited give-and-take, when Supreme Court Justices become worse than Hitler and when those who vote a certain way do so because they’re idiots, it’s time to talk about the weather.

Cubs, i really dont want to get into it with you, cuz quite frankly your beyond hope (i know you feel the same about me). I just want to point out that your sources are both ultra-conservative, and therefore should be taken w/ a grain of salt.

Listen, Bush fucked up, the CIA fucked up, the FBI fucked up....

Then our lovely president tried to cover up a lot of shit. We get 26 prisoners die, and what do we see on TV??? The Terry case, and nothing but that. This administration is all cloak and dagger. There must be an overwelming amount of stupid people in the states, to ever vote Bush back into office.

All random rants.

And Cubs, buddy, check the state you living in. :P

Sire, if you're gonna use Clarke as a source I'm gonna give you the other side of the spectrum to discredit him (though I suppose I could have used MSNBC or Time Magazine.)

Agreed. So did Clinton, the UN, the UK.

We let 26 prisoners die, and we're a terrible country. Saddam kills hundreds of thousands of his own people, and it's 'none of our business.' The Sudan is one of the worst areas of the world right now, and the UN won't classify it as genocide.

PS, the Schaivo case was a major step back for Repbulicans. Trying to overrule the state courts in a state issue is a huge trampling of state's rights and can easily be interpreted as trampling the Constitution. Her life < the American process.

This administration is all cloak and dagger. There must be an overwelming amount of stupid people in the states, to ever vote Bush back into office.

ZOMGSHRUBCHIMPHITLER IS SO DUMB BUT HE'S ALSO THE MASTERMIND PUPPET MASTER GENIUS. And I've said it before and I'll say it again, you don't convert people to vote Democratic by calling them stupid.

And Cubs, buddy, check the state you living in. :P

Illinois? From where you put your location I doubt I'm more than an hour's drive from you.

UM damn what is this grand theft sanoria cause you guys are seriouly highjacking the fucking thread.(ill put the pic on later if i get around to it)

I was in the party and i was kinda pissed at how he left so fast. whenever i have to go suddenly i at least try to give a half a n hour warning and a 10 minutes wanring for the leader to get a replacement if i can't give a half ahour warning.
If he knew he was gonna leave at a certqain time he should have said something. infact i think he probably was the one who asked how much time everyone had left and if i remember right he said that he was leaving at a time that was 1-2 hours later than he left if he didnt say indefinetly.

Either way the part was a nice change of pace for me with not having a some idiot in the party or getting kicked before i get into jueno if i dont arrive there within 3 seconds literally. Ive had to deal with nin with a grand total of +1 evasion gear on me that suck, voke when im doing sata to screw with it, interfere with the sc im in with a rng and just all around impossible to keep hate on (houdyny). Lets not even get started with the pld who was scared to death of the even match bats i pulled to keep up chains when serket hunters kept on killing everything in sight.

Well my luck with parties is at least semi heading up that party was the second decent good one in a long time.
the first having the best rng i have ever seen and may ever see in my life he's the first person to outtp me besides sam in over 10 levels and the first of only 2 people to outdamage me on a weaponskill.(kisada)

the second obviously went south when the brd left without warninng leaving us scrambling for a replacement with the nin extremely close to wearing the damn scorpion harness im trying to get the money for one day soon. By the time everything finished going south i was 3.5k tnl and i only wanted my level 55 so i could have triple attack when helping the ls in between getiing my nin straight to 37 maybe 40.

If youre mad about me not taking the hate off the bunny im sorry but i saw you guys trying to sleep it and since as a thf my weapon delay is extremly low i'd have probably woke it up if it slept trying to take hate of you. So you can uinderstand why i didnt go after it. If it was a spider i could have easly used sneak attack as a makeshift voke and blinktanked it while you finished of the other mob since ive blinked em before when my pld died once before.

Anyway i'd be 55 now if it wasnt for idiots training crabs to zone in kuftal and people going afk right at chain4. things were goin so well that i literally scouted the crabs and planned for a chain 10+ by using flee to get pulling faster. we'd have made great exp in the tree if theyd listend to me when i said they dont have to exp on spiders anymore and that i knew there was at least one camp free but our blm went ona warpath after the second train. He's now a lv 75 rng and i have a feeling what he's doing in kuftal violates the tos against mkping.

Either way the party you were in was a good one, a great one compared to what i have to put up with and in reality even though elitemage left without warning bookitty was the one that sucked the life out of the party by aspiring the bunny. I kept on looking at the log wondering if something else had happened to make her aspir it cause i couldnt believe anyone could be dumb enough not to notice the big red letters when targeting.

/sigh Why the hell is it people that dont know what theyre doing level faster than me?

I'll be checking this thread in hopes that people will list the stupid asses and gimp lazy fucks so I'll know who to avoid

There's a Bard I've partied with twice now at 73 and 74 named Wakmidget that I think is worth mentioning. The first time I partied with him was on my warrior =/ my party was still getting set up when he joined, but the white mage decided to get a head start since we were just waiting on the black mage to get to jeuno. The black mage says he is going to Teleport - Mea and meet us there. Well, the Dark Knight was following Wak on choco while the ninja and I were pretty far behind.

strike 1: Instead of going to Zi'Tah, he decides to go to a far corner of Meriphadaud Mountains and so halfway through Sauromugue, I see him spamming an NM's name in /p chat. Someone asks what it drops and he says "I don't know lol, but i think it's a hnm! I'm gonna kite it!" So he gets OFF his choco and starts running around w/ it..... When the poor black mage got to zone, he didn't know what was going on at all so I just had him follow me to Ro'Maeve since the ninja went to help with Wak's "hnm"..... They decided just to Mazurka to Ro'Maeve =/ NM dropped a skin - big waste of time and choco money.....

sooooo of course the black mage and I get there first =/ the white mage was in Hall of the Gods and on her way to Ru'Aun Gardens. The black mage decided to wait for the ninja, dark knight, and bard..... Wak fell behind.....

strike 2: By the time he got to Ro'Maeve, the white mage, ninja, and I were already in Ru'Aun Gardens =/ I had JUST entered when I see Wak say "<death> run!" in /p chat. I ask what it is and someone tells me he's going to try to Mazurka through Ro'Maeve W/O sneak -_-;;;;; Needless to say, he dies on the giant staircase in a zone where we can't raise him ><; Anyway, the ninja, white mage, and I ran all the way back and we had to fight everything in aggro radius to raise him -_- it was a pain, and one BIG waste of time because he apparently didn't want to bring silent oils to a party at Sky.....

By the time we get there and get to camp, the whm informs me that she has 1 hour or so left since it took so long to get the pt set up and there.....

~~~~~
Second time I partied with this bard, I was still on my warrior =/ This time, I was the one getting the invite, and he was already in the party. The way I see it, everyone deserves 2 chances so I thought maybe he learned his lesson after last time - I was SO wrong.....
After helping the leader by finding myself a skillchain partner, we head down there.....I get to Hall of the Gods and the JP thief informs everyone that she has no sneak oils -_-;;; The ninja was with her and gave her one to get through Ro'Maeve. Wak never said anything and made it to Ru'Aun Gardens safely so I thought maybe he brought some. When we got to Sky, I gave the thief 2 more so she would be able to get to camp =/ I was apparently the only one with half an idea on how to get to the Aura Statue camp so they all followed me..... We got split up after the second teleporter - I was with the summoner and thief while Wak was with the ninja and white mage. When my group found a safe area, I started retracing in my mind the way to get there (we had gone the wrong way =/ sorry guys). Next thing I know, Wak is getting slaughtered. He dies, then the white mage dies, then the ninja dies and I see the ninja say in /p "no oils, Wak?" then Wak replying "nope"...... well, you can't cast there and the white mage had two detectors over her head so all three were forced to HP ><; It took me the rest of my oil stack to get out while they came back from Jeuno..... When they get there, we decide to just do weapons since ppl were at statues by that time -_-;; We get to a camp and the first thing Wak says is "I have 1 hour left sorry" - he left about 45-50 minutes later =/
~~~~~

on a side note about that second party with him, I can't remember the names so I'm not sure how much it'll help, but the JP thief apparently at level 74 didn't understand that you can stack sa and ta..... Neither the ninja nor I knew what she was doing at all ><; When I would voke for a SC, she would do weird crap like trick attack it behind me while it was facing me, then use her sneak attack and WS behind the ninja on the 1/5 times she didn't get stunned from weapon AoE..... And the summoner we had kept using Titan's specials seconds after the fight started before any SCs had taken place....and I mean at the start of every single one..... I don't know what's more weird - trying to MB before a SC or trying to burst earth on a light SC..... correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't burst earth with a light SC =/

It's really just sad that people in their 60s-70s don't have sneak oils or prism powders. For the life of me I can't figure out what's so hard about making sure you have them with you. And I dont want to hear "its to expesnive" because at that level there's no reason you cant come up with the gil to buy them.

Listen, if you people are gonna take the time to get past 60, how about get your shit together. I've been playing this game since pc NA launch and I can tell you, the quailty of players has gone to hell. It's almost impossible to find a tank that has any idea on how hate control is supposed to work or blms that know how and what to mb or rdms that refresh when they're supposed to and so forth.

Also, how about lets get back on topic here. This thread has been hi-jacked to hell. Don't know why everytime a flame starts on here it ends up being about gil sellers and inflation. Take that shit somewhere else.

well i dont know what your talking about ceasar that was a GREAT party and well there is nothing wrong with me leaving to go play a diffrent game, and for your ls "friends" that said i have done the same thing is complete and utter BULLSHIT, for one i ALWAYS give a waring before i have to go its just rude to leave. yes i did just up and go after i set up that party that we had which was VERY good. to tell you the truth i had NO idea i was going to have to play in a counter strike match i hardly ever play on our website im listed as inactive. we had 4 out of 5 and they needed one person, that clan to me is almost liek a faimly im sure you know what its like with your linkshells you would do a lot of for them include "oh i have a LS event to go to sorry i have to leave the party" i didnt mean to be rude but i simply had to help my team mantain there status in CZL which we are currently number 3 in the EST division, there is nothing wrong with me nor my play style, im a very good bard and can help get exp very fast, so before you try to go and flame some one because they just left the party you could simply use that time /sea all XXX and find a new member.

but what ever i didnt mean to piss anyone off i just had to help my team....
