End-game, non-traditional tank classes

Have you read all the posts I have made in this forum in regards to VE/CE generation?

-PLD
-NIN
-DRK
-RDM...

If I knew more about BLU I would do a chart for BLU ce/ve with recasts etc.

I've read at least some of your posts and mine wasn't directed at you nor soliciting a response from you personally. Trying to point me to the OP for no reason just seemed silly.

I was pointing out that Dancer has significant ability to keep hate and mitigate damage taken. I don't have the hate generation numbers for it's cures/provoke/etc either, but that doesn't disqualify the argument.

Sorry my replies aren't being seen.

The Forum Mods have to OK every post I make as like policy to new posters or something. I posted something like 5 days before this one and still hasn't come up. I really don't even know if this one will get seen either.

Regarding distance to get hate, it's 25' when the spell is cast. For kiting, hate moves that do not require you to target the mob are a huge plus because you can start casting outside 25' and just have to make sure the spell goes off 25' or under - you can keep very good distance.

When you deal with hate moves that are on the target mob you're kiting, you have to start casting inside 20' and god knows where the mob will be when it goes off. This is why I feel BLU is an excellent kiter for harder mobs (on the things people actually still kite full time).

Another comment I saw about RDM tanking... RDM tanking is considered a standard tank on many servers. I know it's kind of hard to see things outside your own server, but I guess you'll have to trust me on this one. My server, Odin, actually uses a great deal of RDM tanking. NIN/DRK tanking isn't used quite so much here other than by my own LS (which actually never uses PLD on anything). Different styles but they all work - although each certainly has it's pluses and minuses.

Another thing I'll touch on is the idea that PLD is the "3rd best at hate generation". If you go strictly by the numbers, then yes this is correct. However, I will still say that PLD/NIN is in fact, the best overall, most versatile endgame tank (this coming from someone in a LS that never uses them). My reasoning is that robots don't play this game, human beings do - and we're not perfect (some of us not very skilled either). PLD/NIN is "easier" to play in that you can screw up more and still not die, you are required to perform less actions to maintain a decent amount of hate, and it's incredibly self sufficient.

PLDs make great holders for groups that have to rush to HNMs. There's a PLD on our server that gives us so many headaches because he'll solo claim and hold the craziest shit for like 10-15 minutes (usually Khim). It's really frustrating since we use NINs and they require very good support to function. We still prefer NIN/DRK because when given the right support, you can maintain the TE hate cap (as seen by the enmity #s) more consistently than PLD - actually very easily, which pretty much allows everyone else in the alliance to go brain-dead regarding hate (a plus when you're killing timmy at 5AM).

RDM tanking offers a couple of things PLD and NIN tanking cannot. The general MDB (outside of PLD rampart and maybe an Aegis PLD - this one is close) is much higher than either of the other 2 standard endgame tanks. RDMs are also nice because they can fall back to typical RDM duties and the /NIN sub doesn't really gimp that aspect - so they can tank, or be normal. Some argue that you can't do both at the same time so what's the point? I'd argue that in an ideal world it's no big deal, but when you're in a real LS, being versatile helps. Some LS members only have tank jobs, some only mage jobs. RDM can be both and it's like getting 2 things for the price of 1. For us, we see RDM is a good backup for situations where we're not sure what tanks are going to show up later - one shows up RDM/NIN goes support, one doesn't, goes tank. Other groups will live and die by RDM tanking and take this REALLY far - ideally they have strengths of both PLD and NIN if the person is extremely good. Belkin's LJ is probably the most concise about how to go about it.

Last thing I guess. Some people here and on other forums offer a lot of information from the research Ashira and I have done on this, which is really flattering to me. However, I do not think anyone should make the argument that if you do not understand our testing, then they are a tanking n00b. There are some pretty damn good tanks that either don't know such testing exists or know about it and simply don't give a damn. Conversely there are some really awful tanks I see on my server that have clear knowledge of the system. Sometimes converting things from paper to action can be difficult I guess. I feel that the enmity information is most useful when discussing new tanking ideas or complex strats using hate manipulation - I don't think any of the information is all that useful to well-known tanking schemes like NIN/DRK, PLD/NIN, and RDM/NIN. People knew it worked before it all came out.

I never argued or mentioned that DNC is not a viable endgame tank. I really would love to see some in-depth testing into the matter. Being a lvl 50DNC myself (stopped after first week), DNC can generate alot of "hate". Being able to tank in ptys just by flourish/cure's up to 50 was an asset. Only things that makes me sad ;; is haste samba does NOT stack past the 93.3% Haste cap. Where DNC should really shine IMO is in merit ptys for that initial "voke" along with haste samba or drain sambas, plus stun is always a bonus!

DNC does generate hate well... we are a bit too squishy and have poor gear access atm for anything large I would think... merit tanking looks promising later on. I'm still not sure of this jobs usefulness in endgame.

Also the fact that DNC requires TP is an issue endgame due only to the fact alot of LS are paranoid about giving mobs TP. Although starting off with 5 finishing moves, 300% TP prior to fight you should last a while :P Hey but BRD's had their fun tanking for a while and they are squishy!

Yea until you get to 10 posts i believe your posts have to be ok'd before they appear. Until then it will kinda suck... sorry.

On a related note to this thread though we had almost a full alliance show up for our omega today so we figured why not play around a bit. So instead of our usual saftey net of 2pld/nin and a nin/drk we decided just to go with a pld/nin(truegrave) a nin/drk(Itto) and a rdm/nin(tomasello). Basically our tanks were going to be Itto and Tom but we had true there as a saftey just incase tom didnt do so well on the initial zerg because of the way we do our kills.

Basically our setup today was
tank
pld/nin
rdm/nin
nin/drk
rdm/drk
whm
brd

Nuke
blmx5
brd

support/dot
Whm
rdm/drk
sam/warx2 (DOT while kiting)
nin/war (pod)

First off we dont normally have this many people so not all of this is necessary by any means but this is the way i like it

Started off the fight with true flash pulling and then the 3 tanks spirits withins. Then Tom and the rdm/drk in the tank party both chainspelled. The drk for the stuns and tom for dispel and whatever else he was using to set hate. The blms unleashed hell and got it down to like 25% or so. Then we let it change form to standing the second rdm/drk chainspelled and the Sams did a couple ws and nin on pod duty got the pod and the blms nuked it out. After we got it down to about 10% or so we pulled it into the kite to farm chips.

For this part of the fight Tom did a fairly good job of holding hate except for he had a little trouble competing with the first chainspell stunner.

Then we went into the kite and kited him til we got the 1min warning and nuked him out.

For this part Itto dominated the hate and only lost it when we had a well timed CB and he died. When that happened Tom was the tank while kiting it over the pld and had it most of the time. All in all it was a bit of a waste and too much effort for tom to be the tank. If he was on pld instead he could be much lazier and still have the same effect plus if shit hits the fan its safer. Also for the most part the Blms only stun during this phase and the sams control the regen by Wsing when necessary.

As for the run 1 death, 3 chips, legs and hands... can't complain. As for the rdm/nin tank... worked but too much effort for a small gain.

Summary of Dejavu POST =

Rdm/Nin Excellent Tanks, however not good for Kited Mobs with movement speed.

While I know 25' is the distance, I assume this is the distance the target is from the mob, and not the caster. Otherwise this could rather easily be abused (for WHM etc.) on spells like Curaga IV, as you can stand past 30' range and still hit the tanks with it, by having the target stand at 9' from the tank. Additionally, it can be easily abused on kited fights, where the tank can be 15' away from the mob, in which case you can be 35' away.
