Endgame T1 DPS Classes--No utility, Question

I am creating a character for the first time. Firstly, I know my question may not fit with this game (I may be wording it incorrectly or even asking the wrong question), because I have yet to grasp the fundamentals of this game. Secondly, I am having trouble finding information. I have done several searches on parses, dps, classes; and nothing is clear.

Considering that; if there was a class set (basic job, advanced job, &c), that was considered top dps with little to no utility. What class(es) would it be? I am looking for optimal dps for Endgame. :)

I am interested in receiving a general answer, no need to get into specifics or debate, because chances are I will not understand--don't forget I am a newbie.

I also do not have a preference on playing style. I like playing a variety of classes and will probably end up playing them all, but this is the first time I am doing some research.

Thanks in advance, and any tips would be appreciated. You can toss a few in my inbox. I would love to hear them.

Whew! And by the way, Hiiiii!! First timer here. :omg:

Yayy,
Syrah

FFXI is such a changing dynamic that no one job will be the 'best' for everything.

Your merit jobs, (exp beyond the exp cap that is not called exp), will be fast melee jobs. Currently: WAR, NIN, MNK, and SAM I'd rate highest.

DRG is good too, but such a stigma exists you should probably avoid it as a first job.

Best endgame DPS can vary from a 1 minute timer on Summoner Blood Pacts, to all-out BLM nuking, to a WAR melee burn. You'll understand the game much more as you develop your job and eventually reach 75.

Of the jobs Arc mentioned, ninja will probably be in the most demand. All of the jobs he mentioned deal tons of damage, but ninja can also tank, and tank jobs are in extreme demand these days.

There is no DPS job for endgame. Endgame is all about spike damage, not damage over time. If you have a lot of people meleeing on a mob constantly, it'll be spamming very nasty moves and kill you quickly. For endgame damage, black mage, and summoner to a much lesser extent are the top damage dealers. For melee damage dealers, samurai is your best bet, with other spike damage specialists(thf, drk) supporting them. All of the DoT spells out before wings of the goddess were mainly used to offset any regeneration that the mob has.

Scholar might change endgame since they actually have DoT's that do enough damage to actually consider them damage dealers, but there aren't enough of them to really talk about their effectiveness.

However his question was formed as the highest overall DPS. Geared right the most damage output possible that I've seen is a Dark Knight wielding a Rune Chopper with full haste percentages in every form. Think of it as a heavy hitting damage dealer with literally as close to 0 delay as possible in the game.

Ninjas and Monks can hit a near constant swing rate with pretty damaging results. Warriors can do large spike damage or extremely high and consistent dps depending on your choice of weapon and subjob.

So in the end, the three options for zerging are DRK with insta-swinging great axe, DRK with a Kraken Club (attacks 1-8 times per attack round), and WAR/NIN with an Axe/Ridill (Ridill has a high damage and attacks 1-3 times per round) but all of them are limited to the duration of their two-hour ability and its long recast timer.

In the end it depends on the event at hand and what strategy you use. The most powerful combinations I just mentioned only work on mobs that you don't have to kite, otherwise you really need the magic damage from Black mages and Summoners.

As someone said, there is really know "best" in this game.

A lot of it is situational. Other than that, people above have covered the basics :P

Thanks folks :)

Lots of excellent info in this thread; thank you for being so kind/taking the time to answer my questions. :emote_grouphug:

Now, to pick a server.....

btw...In order of 30sec OR 1min top dmg in "zerg"
1) KC Drk
2) KC axe (30sec only)

Regardless the KC always comes out on top both of which require specific gear.

In terms of answering the OP question. Seems your from WoW, FFXI is alot different lol. No instances :O
Do you prefer Mage or DD or Tank? tis the question really.

The following link is to all the current jobs. You can read about each jobs abilitys and/or magic to get a better understanding.

I'd say BLM but that has too much utility, so I'm going to go with RNG or SAM. High damage, low utility. You sit there and damage till you pull aggro and die. I have a WHM friend who hates SAMs because they pull too much enmity and don't sub ninja. Not that I really blame them, I wouldn't want to sub ninja either. But she hates SAMs.

Samurai is probably the best all-around endgame damage dealing class since it has -

1. Some of the most powerful single-hit weapon skills in the game

2. Ability to gain TP to use said weapon skills using a job ability with a 3 minute cooldown

3. Access to a large amount of great Strength boosting gear to hit harder with said weapon skills

No. 2 is the biggest issue here since Samurai can shoot off a big weapon skill effectively at the drop of a hat, and they can do so without actually hitting the mob which means less TP given to the mob. They can also gain TP even in battles where the mob is difficult or impossible to deal regular melee damage against.

This is the biggest thing. Your best endgame DPS is still your best EXP DPS in most cases. The issue comes from giving the target so much TP that you boost the power of their skills, or result in more frequent usage. It isn't that Monks or Thieves don't do great damage to your big endgame targets, it's that you don't want your linkshell to wipe out from the enemies skills. You just don't want DPS in that scenario, with the exception of a few cases(Big DoT spells, like Scholar Helixes.)

Actually, I have never played WoW before. :)

I have posted this question on another site. So far, from the answers on both sites, the information has pointed me towards a melee DD. I am going to read up on some of the abilities/weapons and see which one piques my interest.

Thats not true, any fight lasting under 30 seconds, with the right gear, RC will outperform KC. Not always, but its really too close to say which is better (for anything over 30 seconds, KC will win hands down).

But to the op, there really is no best dps class, if talking merit pt's, I'd like to say the best job is still war, even without a ridill. End game, there is none, differs for everything.

if you actually want to be useful on most endgame LSs the best option for you would be BLM... High damage, small danger of tp gain, and also very likely to be in need in any endgame LS.

If you want to melee in a burn situation, KC dark is by far the best but expensive.
If you want to melee in a harder fight, Sam is your best bet for TP mitigation and WS/SC potential.(but most LS already have enough because they will only use 1 or 2 on any fight)
If you want to be used in almost any situation for top teir damage, BLM. Also BLMs get used in packs so even if you are the 6th one invited to an event you will still probably be used. (being able to sleep things doesnt hurt either)

Endgame comes down to a few jobs and BLM gets invited more than any other job because they do alot of damage and in some fights virtually all the damage plus they are safe to use on ugly stuff.

Yes even BLM with crappy gear manage to do acceptable damage in "endgame" and obviously are top DD with good gear. But now if you want good BLM gear forget HNMs... You will shine in Limbus, Dynamis, Sea but not in salvage except on boss.

As a lot of people have said, SAM is probably the best choice.

One reason is because most of SAMs decent endgame gear is all buyable or you can get from Dynamis which can either happen early if you're lucky and be a bitch.

With SAM though, best way to maximize it's potential is to level basically every decent sub for it so you can be completely versitile, ie WAR THF DRG NIN WHM RNG BLU even.

Also try to level up each of your weapons like Great Katana(obviously), Pole Arm(spears), Bow/Arrow(for ranger sub can do big damage with big TP gain).

Also the best thing about SAM is that it is extremely cheap compared to most jobs such as NIN where you constantly need money for scrolls tools and such. SAM is just a straight away run with armor and weapons.

If I'm wrong on anything forgive me haven't actually FFXI in at least 8+months.

Only subs a sam should ever need is war, nin, and sometimes thf. Drg, whm, rng, and blu all make poor subs. The closest to good would be /rng, but even then, it doesn't match /war by any means (yes even on colibri).

Great Katana is the only weapon you will ever need to level, pole arm is just for shits and giggles, and bow...well if for some reason you like to gimp your pt's by subbing rng, then sure.

Sam is NOT extremely cheap compared to most jobs, any job that someone takes seriously will cost them alot of time and effort to gear nicely.

You are not forgiven! lol, but at least you were right about sam being a well rounded end game job =P

Dragoon and Ranger are effective subs for samurai; they're not necessary subs to have leveled, but saying they're useless or gimp is completely wrong.

They may not be gimp, but I cannot think of a single scenario where a drg or rng sub would outparse /war. Although can be very effective in pvp.
