Ok, So i'm basically going to just say it. Who the FUCK cares if someone spells or uses a damn word wrong?Honestly do you assholes(people who don't respond to the thread just bash on people for grammer and spelling) just sit around and wait for a damn thread to pop up with bad grammer and spelling.Honestly do you get off to it?It's not helping the person or QCDN.org.If people read it oviously they'll see the mistakes, you don't need to go out and bash them even more. It's just down right rude. This game is based around having fun and escape life. Than people have to come in here and be treated like their in fucking english class? No!Seriously, just leave the fucking people alone.Who cares if i spell no when its suppose to mean know,Or write there when it's suppose to mean their? It's not a fucking big deal. This crap has pissed me off to long and I know their are other people out there.

It's qcdn not fucking english class.
And yes maybe if you can barly read it, it would be ok.
It "chat" talk EVERYONE does it from time to time.
So please lay off you asshole out there who think its cool to bash people about this crap.

P.S. now this thread will show who the real assholes are on qcdn.:rtfm:

I agree with everything above posted, Yuber, however, i have to draw a line when it comes to Blazn..........

props. There are also numerous ways you could build on how people are simply assholes on qcdn, not only with the grammatical errors. But, theyre never going to mature. Just got to swallow it, and ignore it.

And on the "treating it like english class" topic, dont forget how people treat ffxi like its their fucking job, gotta play by the "The Unritten Book on How to Play FFXI the Only Way"

And that dude yusuke. Maybe a cool guy, but his posts just drove me up the wall.

I agree with Yuber. Thumbs up.

Needs more whitespace after punctuation. I kid, maybe. Anyway, there's a difference between an occasional typo being in a post and someone just not trying. Usually when people don't try, I just don't read their posts and don't say anything. I don't need to point out their failure when it's right there easily visible for anyone to see. All I ask from people (and I don't really ASK it, I just hope they have enough care in themselves and their reputation) is that they try.

There is no excuse for bad spelling anymore. Firefox 2 comes with a built-in spell checker that will check your posts as you type them up. There are websites which will check the spelling of a single word or whole posts. There are plenty of tools available for people to correct their spelling, so there is no excuse for being a horrible speller. This doesn't mean that each and every typo or misspelled word should be attacked, more those who do it repeatedly and without any indication that they're even trying.

Grammar is very important too. Look at the guard skillup thread, because of Rorion's phrasing(his grammar and word choice), he wrote something that read vastly different than his intentions. Communication skills are important, if you're too stupid to know how to communicate effectively, you're not going to make it far in the real world(It's hard to mess up "do you want fries with that").

For small or occasional mistakes, yeah, forgive that; everyone messes up now and then. For idiots who can't spell if their life depended on it or whose every sentence is confusing as hell as to what they mean, fuck them; they're getting what they deserve. They're not going to put one iota of effort into not sounding like a dumbass, they have no room to complain about being treated like one. People will treat you how you portray yourself, speak like an idiot, get treated like one. You're acting like it's incredibly difficult to not sound stupid, when it's really not that hard. Just fucking try and most people leave you alone.

Hellstorm is another person who needs to be taken out back and beaten with a dictionary; it might be the only way he'd learn how to spell.

Spell check is nothing new. Maybe in browsers, but not everyone uses firefox. Not even the largest % of people on the internet use firefox. One fact remains. This is a message board for a video game. Video games are not serious business. I go out of my way to make sure my spelling has no mistakes, but I'm not going to scream at someone for spelling sumthing in there post rong.

But yes, some people are downright annoying. It's like nails across a blackboard. I just resist the urge to get snobbish with those people. Nobody likes a snob.

Communication is one of the greatest things in QCDN or FFXI, so generally people like to be able to read or understand what someone is saying, therefore they might give a little constructive critisms to help the person/bash the person so that future readers can understand what they're trying to get out.

Of course you don't have to reread what you typed to make spelling/grammar corrections, I don't even do that myself. Since this is just a social place to be yourself and speak how you may normally speak. On the other hand though, the way you type, whether it's spelt and grammatically wrong or well typed usually presents to others your intelligence level, at least that's how most may look at it.

Also got to remember there's a lot of people here that are older than 20 years old, not in their 13s to 16s, which is why a lot of them may dislike it when a person types slobbish.

As for myself, I usually don't care if a person mispells or types grammatically incorrect, as long as I can read it at all, I won't really bother to ever fix a person's mistake though with their english, at least not on here. Understanding is better than perfection after all.

/begin rant

The problem is this is a message board. It's not face-to-face or even audible conversation. It's not even instant messaging where one can quickly correct one's spelling or grammatical errors to clarify a statement. The only form of communication here is the typed/written word. If someone has absolutely no experiences with you from inside the game then the only representation you have to the community is how well you can develop and communicate your thoughts into legible, coherent speech. And since this is not a chat room or an instant messaging program, that "chat talk" you speak of does not exist here. Try using that "chat talk" in a corporate memo or in a sales proposal or even a paper for a college class and see how far it will get you.

For the most part, the problem is laziness. On programs such as AIM or while text messaging via the cellphone people get lazy and stop spelling out simple words such as "you" or "are" and begin using all kinds of shortcuts. With the chat space allotted in FFXI I think this practice is a little more forgivable. Especially when you're trying to hurriedly type a message in the midst of battle. However, when you use these shortcuts often enough over a significant portion of time they will invariably find their way into your everyday lexicon. Pretty soon you start accepting these shortcuts as acceptable speech and you find it increasingly difficult to use proper grammar and spelling at times when it is necessary. Laziness leads to bad habits and bad habits eventually corrupt the good ones.

That being said, no one is perfect when it comes to grammar and spelling. I am guilty of it in this very post since it's bad grammar to switch from third to second person and back again. That's why newspapers and publishers spend a lot of money on copy editors. However, since I want my ideas to be as easy to understand as possible I should make every effort to communicate those ideas as clearly and effectively as possible.

I do understand that there are a lot of people who play FFXI and frequent this forum who are not native English speakers. I think it's only fair that a certain amount of leeway be given to those individuals because the English language can be especially difficult to master to an outsider. If, however, you attended public school in the United States all of your schooling years to this point in your life (assuming that you're at least 13 if you play FFXI and post here), then you have absolutely no excuse. It's not the system's fault, it's not the teacher's fault. To some degree it can be your parent's/guardian's fault but once you reach a certain age the responsibility becomes yours. If you use this site then that implies you either have a computer of your own or you have access to a computer through a library/school or you have access through another individual. All of which means you have at your disposal an almost infinite amount of FREE resources to improve your reading and writing skills.

To those who would argue, "Well I type just as I speak." Guess what, you're not speaking here. You're writing. Our brains process aural information differently than visual information. I am from Oklahoma and I have a hick accent. I use words like "ya'll" or "ain't" and I don't always end all of my gerunds with an enunciated "g" sound. You wouldn't know any of that by reading most of my posts here. If it's that big of a problem then maybe you should pick up some English language tapes and learn out to enunciate all of your syllables so that you can type better than you speak. If English is your native language, and no ebonics and redneck are not native languages, considering this is a text-based forum, then I do not think it is too many to ask for those individuals to go out of their way to use as proper of grammar as is possible.

/end rant

There is one huge thing I hate regarding people's use of the english language though. Walls of text. Nothing is worse than the great wall o' text. That's second only to MISTER ALL-CAPS, but that doesn't seem to be a problem at all on qcdn.

A spelling flame? With no outright horrible spellers on the board lately?

*yawn*

Wake me when Blazn and Yusuke get here

Occasional spelling mistakes or typos are ignored; the main time people bitch about the spelling is when the person is constantly spelling things wrong and not making any effort at all to actually spell correctly. Blazn, Hellstorm and Yususke are good examples. Hell, Yusuke is the perfect example, because he talked like an idiot on purpose.

If someone isn't willing to put any effort into not sounding like an idiot, they shouldn't be surprised or upset when people treat them as such. Just like people who don't farm and gimp their way through exp are treated like gimps, same way here.

Has it been anyone else's observation that the usual comeback from a particularly bad offender (who's called on their unintelligibility) is something to the tune of "shut up, this isn't English class?"

It makes me wonder whether they're deluded/lazy enough that they think stuff like this is only needed for school, and has no application whatsoever to the rest of their lives.

I will agree with Blazn and Yusuke. Hellstorm sometimes annoys me with his spelling but doesn't even come remotely close to Blazn or Yusuke. And with Yusuke I just always wanted to scream "SPEAK ENGLISH DAMMIT!".

But Blazn and Yusuke haven't been here in ages, and I believe it was just yesterday or a few days prior where someone was being criticized for their minute mispellings. Like it was worth criticizing.

When you criticize someone for something small like using "their" instead of "they're" it only makes you look like an attention whore. Like we needed you (not you baja) to point out to us that YOU actually know the proper way to spell "they're"! Good on ya!

With Blazn and Yusuke, though, I'd consider it open season if they ever posted again.

Either that or they're just sick of the stuck up little snots that qcdn seems to have a lot of.

For the most part, QCDN is just a microcosm of the real world. Yeah there are a lot of elists here, but there are a hell of a lot more of them in the real world.

Ok, I agreed on what you said till you gave us some examples... i dont really care if ppl write words properly and w/o mistakes, since english is not my first language... but tbh, when you start using no for know... then it might start to get confusing for non-native english speakers
I think at least ppl should be able to understand what the person wants to say with their post

snots != elitists

If you make constant typos and it's obvious you aren't even trying when you are fully capable, I will stop trying to hold back on making fun of you. Peer pressure is how you learn. Trust me, I'm being an ass for your own good. It's fine to get mad back, but I will never stop, and I will never take someone seriously who refuses to progress in skills they use daily because they aren't in an official institution to learn.

If you are free to butcher my language I am free to poke fun at you for it, to a degree. If you don't want to improve your skill set, don't use it. Go post somewhere you don't have to speak English. Here, it's all we have.

You wouldn't catch me reinacting this flame on a Spanish board, or any other board with a different language. If I consistently show large failures at a language, I wont subject others to it till I have learned it's use better. Neither would I take criticism negatively since I am trying to learn. In the case of English, though, I would be forced to concede I had erred.
